Buffett has averaged down a few times. But he has a staff of zillions of lawyers and CPAs and Charlie etc to double check his decisions. Plus nowadays he has the powerful Buffett Effect.... that is, people will buy his stocks simply because Buffett owns them.

The allure of averaging down is it *seems* to make mistakes "go away" by lowering ones average purchase prices. But there are 2,500 stocks on the NYSE alone, so why not find something else? If you adore the business, find something similar.
