Re content protection:
While I don't remember the source, my understanding was that when power ran out (or was disconnected), the contents would be cleared (or not accessible) - this could be done in a manner similar to software that is distributed for try-outs with an expiration of its functionality, in this case the functionality disablement (is that a word?) being triggered by the absence of power or attempt to tamper. Tamper resistance could be achieved by a simple mechanical device triggered by cover removal, IDE disconnect, etc. Whatever the method, it seems to have satisfied the folks at FOX.
