I just got off of the phone with E*TRADE, here is what I learned:

They confirmed that Mczaf and the current Mad Catz are indeed the same company, and they have legal obligations to the stock symbol MCZAF. They said that even if the company says they want to trade under a new symbol, they would still have an obligation to the original stock symbol. They are currently being traded under the gray market, but at the very least we can sleep easy for now...
