In late 2008 I actually added to my blue chip stocks because I was really worried about the banks, where I already had lots of money. Figured that the safest blue chip corporations were better bets than many banks. But it was really painful to place those buy orders. THAT's how you know you're getting in near the bottom. The bottom was still a few months off (it occurred in March 2009) but those buys eventually worked out great.
You might consider putting some money in a safe ETF like DIA or SPY which are high-yielding. But cash is always good too.
