FAMILY FUN DAY TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR LIFE-SAVING TREATMENT
25th September 2018 11:12 252 Views

A family fun day is being held in Wootton on Saturday (29th September) to help fund life-saving treatment for Isle of Wight resident, Simon Mayne.

Back in March of this year, 57-year-old Simon started to get headaches and lost some vision in his left eye. After a GP referral and MRI scan the shocking cause was found – Simon had a brain tumour.

Major brain surgery followed which removed an amazing 90% of the tumour, but the tumour was to be diagnosed as a Glioblastoma grade IV; the most aggressive, fast growing and rare brain tumour.

Simon has now received the NHS gold standard of care which is surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. But the Mayne family are trying to find alternative treatments; they have discovered the DCVax-L vaccine which uses immunotherapy to treat Glioblastoma multiform. This vaccine is unique and will be made especially for Simon using tumour tissue and cells from Simon’s blood. The vaccine uses his body to help kill the cancer cells.

The interim results show life expectancy can be extended by months and as much as 7 years. But the vaccine and treatment costs anything up to £250,000, which is why Simon and his family are fundraising today.

Saturday’s fundraiser, which is planned to be a fabulous day full with entertainment and amazing raffle prizes, will be held between 11:00-16:00 at Wootton Bridge Community Centre.

Captain Jack Sparrow will be making an appearance between 11:30-12:30 followed by Ariel and Captain America between 13:00-14:00. Throughout the day there will be performances from Carolyn White Tappers, Lynette Bailey Academy of Irish Dancing, The Bunker Girls, Miss Kitty Whiskers, Chair Burlesque and many more.

Local businesses have dug deep and donated a fantastic variety of prizes including:

*1 month Gold Gym membership
*Family swim passes
*MOT voucher
*2-course carvery vouchers for 2
*Luxury food hampers
