Wonderful response!!!

Thanks for your encouraging words. We run Black Angus cattle on our farm. Many years ago we raised tobacco. Very labor intensive. Then, we switched to alternating corn and soybeans, with small reward!!!

My son-in-law and me began raising feeder cattle. We had 1oo getting close to topping out when our grandson had to be put in Vanderbilt Children's Hospital (his son). We were there so many days that we let the cattle get too fat. They were on automatic feeders and we didn't have to worry about them. After the funeral and we had time to finally take them off to market, we had got in "no man's land" and barely made any profit. If you know anything about cattle, you know what I'm talking about. They got in the 800 pound zone. Looking back on it, we probably should have just kept them for heifers and bred them.

Anyway, we replaced them all and tried another run. Borrowed a ton of money from the bank. Right when they got about 400 pounds and things were looking good, they came down with a respiratory virus. We had 80 of the 100 to die!!! We spent a fortune with vets and medicine trying to ward off catastrophe but it didn't work very well. Each morning we would go to the feed lot and see 10 or 12 more dead. THIS is one of the things I'm trying to pay back on.

We are having SOME success now with "momma cows" and selling off calves when they are about 600 pounds. A slow process, though!

I'm in Kentucky. May I ask what state you are located in?

Wishing us BOTH great luck with this stock!!!
Mike
