Rico Gathers arrested for marijuana possession
ByPatrik Walker Sep 1, 9:56 AM

The show's likely over for Rico Gathers.
The outrage that seems to ensue whenever the idea was floated that he was very much on the Dallas Cowboys' bubble may be cult-like and a bit detached from reality, but it did nothing to change said reality. Fact is, as talented of a receiver as he might be, he leaves much to be desired in other arenas. It's for these reasons the team seems to have cooled noticeably on a player they once had a ton of belief in, paying him a chunky $449,990 to essentially redshirt his rookie year on the team's 10-man practice unit. For perspective, the Cowboys' 53rd-man earned $450,000 that same year, with the typical practice squad seat being worth around $117,300 annually.
Gathers was the highest-paid practice squad player in the entire NFL at the time.

For those doing the math at home, the Cowboys gifted Gathers $332,690 in extra salary to remain with the team, despite him having not played a single snap of football since his junior high days. That's a sizable investment to make in a sixth-round pick that would've been a seventh-rounder had the team actually have a selection in the final round that year, and it proves how determined they were to mold him into an NFL tight end -- a tall task by every possible standard.
Now, two years later, a lot has transpired and not much of it is positive.
And what's worse, only hours before the cut deadline, he's now been arrested for possession of marijuana -- Frisco Police tell Mike Fisher of 247Sports. The incident occurred at 10pm CST on Friday evening, only one day before the team needed to make their final call on his status.
Already on the bubble, the Cowboys would now have to decide to sacrifice another talent to keep on a player who isn't NFL ready in his third year, and now facing criminal charges and a possible NFL suspension.

Over the course of his stint with the team, Gathers has admitted he wasn't focused on football and it wasn't until the Cowboys refused to re-activate him following a cleared concussion in Week 7 of his second season that he found his moment of clarity. That was also buoyed by the fact they chose to promote then-rookie Blake Jarwin to the active roster instead, also preventing him from being poached by the rival Philadelphia Eagles, sending a very real message they were readying themselves to pop Gathers' rapidly growing bubble. He's been far from oblivious as of late when it comes to his possible fate, nothing early in the offseason he was simply trying to make "somebody's roster".
Good luck doing that now.

just another day
