An ability to slow development and increase margins is what I have been most waiting for.

Isn't that a bit short sighted? There is a direct competitor with access to leading edge processes, first since a very long time, and Intel's reaction is to slow down its process development? That is supposed to be smart?

I stated it before and not getting tired doing so: The actual reason most likely is that it gets too expensive for Intel moving forward without any new business, being it foundry, mobile or anything that helps financing those fabs. Intel's core business just isn't enough, especially not growing enough. With AMD grabbing market share, this situation is going to worsen, which makes the situation gradually worse for Intel. We'll see how Zen2 on 7nm will perform against what Intel has to offer on 10nm by that time and how performance, cost etc. compare.

Architecture being most important: I agree, but Intel didn't really show great skills on that level when they tried to enter the mobile business, where there architecture simply was inferior (even though they had a significant process lead at that time). Their 10% performance increases with each major architectural rework of their core CPUs doesn't tell that story either. Intel was fatally lazy on that level due to missing competition. Now they have decent competition on every level, from foundries to almost their entire product portfolio. Intel never been under such competitive pressure since decades.
