?In 2016, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 58 others at an Orlando nightclub.

And, of course, the worst mass shooting in United States history so far: In 2017, for no apparent reason, a squeaky clean elderly man with no history of violence and not a trace of any kind of criminal background decided to open fire on concertgoers in Las Vegas from his room at the Mandalay Bay hotel, killing 58 and injuring a shocking 546.

Why? We may never know.

And those are just a few incidents in the United States — not even mentioning public terror attacks abroad in England and France.

And by now we’re all familiar with what happens directly after one of these attacks.

An intense national political debate begins about whether or not we should change the gun laws or get rid of guns altogether.

Well, as a firm supporter of the Second Amendment, I can tell you right now I do not support that, nor do I think it’s a solution.

Other go-to “bright ideas” include banning violence in movies, TVs, and video games, not showing the killer’s face on TV, beefing up armed security, or revising the “mental health care system,” whatever that means.

But the truth is, when it really comes down to it, nobody knows what to do, and none of these solutions will work.

For example, take armed guards and metal detectors at our public schools after a string of mass shootings in the 1990s, especially after Columbine.

Even with all the safety protocols in place, no major school shooting at an elementary, middle, high school, or university campus was stopped.

And it makes sense when you consider that a recent analysis of 62 mass killings found that greater security is rarely a consideration when shooters select locations to target.

It seems the only things metal detectors, guards, pat-downs, x-ray machines, and K-9 units actually do is give us the false illusion of safety.

One journalist demonstrated that the TSA’s Rapiscan full-body x-ray scanners only show metallic objects as black on the screen, meaning any weapon can easily be rendered invisible on the body against the scan’s black background.

Later a team of security researchers from the University of California at San Diego, the University of Michigan, and John Hopkins set out to test the weapon-hiding theory for themselves.

They found that they could not only hide weapons but also pull off plenty of other tricks such as using Teflon tape to conceal weapons against someone’s spine or simply molding plastic explosives around a person’s body to make it nearly indistinguishable from flesh.

But ineffective technology is just one piece of the puzzle.

Consider just plain old-fashioned human error. All of these scanning devices require human interaction to work.

That’s basically some bored, underpaid person staring at a screen ALL DAY.

When is the last time you really watched the person viewing the baggage scanner at the airport?

Most of the time, they’re looking at their phone or chatting with a friend.

Then there’s the fact that these scanning machines are bulky and expensive.

They can only be placed in very obvious locations, not in the middle of courtyards or stairwells or on your public bus or subway.

And they’re so noticeable that anybody who wanted to shoot up a crowd of people would simply avoid locations with metal detectors.

But even if they didn’t decide to avoid the metal detectors, there is no real evidence that the presence of these scanners actually stops a determined gunman from opening fire.

After all, metal detectors and x-ray machines only work if people actually comply and agree to walk through them in an orderly manner.

If someone with a semi-automatic decides they don’t want to comply... well, then they’re useless.

The issue is clear: We don’t have a gun problem, a violent video game problem, or a mental health epidemic; we have a technology problem.

Which brings us back to this little box — the solution to all of this...
