Myself, I've never understood why a low float stock will have a wide spread making it hard to get out at a good price. My personal logic, if I were a market maker, would be that even on a low floater that I brought the bid price up nearer to the ask to entice selling. However making a market in a low float stock and keeping the spread wide is probably how the market makers make their money - but I'm guessing.
At various times during the day you will see the spread tighten considerably and widen considerably, I presume at that time, the market makers all have enough shares to sell etc when the bid and the ask is close.
Happy to be corrected if someone knows better.
