I disagree about the employees becoming a 1099 contractors. That can also hurt the company if they ever want to be listed. Raising money is hard in this sector but most companies in this sector raise money in crowd funding campaigns. They are easy to do and you don't have to worry about jeopardizing the company. There are plenty of people and companies willing to invest money through crowd funding.
