"This summer, Best tested an ammonium nitrate-based chemical created by an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. The substance, touted as being non-detonable, had generated media attention.

The test resulted in a powerful explosion.

“Adding a small percentage” of another chemical to ammonium nitrate, Best said, “has almost no impact on the explosive potential or the detonability.”

Adding a large percentage of another chemical can make it safer. But for farmers, that means buying and transporting more to get the same amount of nitrogen to their crops."
