"For a certain Phase II clinical trial, where the safety and efficacy of a new treatment is still being explored, one can argue for a more liberal alpha to give the treatment a higher level of the benefit of doubt, especially when the disease or condition have only a few, if any, effective treatment options. If it should pass, it would be weeded out in a Phase III trial with a more stringent significance level."
