Sorry, I was a mechanic for 25 years and a picky one at that.

The term "semi" refers to the engine, a low compression diesel which depends on a hot spot or glow plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture. Hence the term semi-diesel.

A semi-diesel can be used to power over the road tractors pulling trailers - in addition to many other applications. In fact the tractors don't necessarily have to be semi-powered, but yeah, lay persons will still call them "semis".

What Tesla is proposing to build is more properly termed a "tractor".
