FWIW at this point, I came across this post on a liver disease support forum that I follow. It describes a participant's experience in the trial:

"I was in the subset of study participants that did not have varices at start of study. My results were lower fibroscan score, lower HVPG, lowered Nash score on bx, no varices and had a reduction of gastric irritation, and according to physical exam had soft liver.
All good results and certainly worthwhile to pursue IMO. I DO NOT know if I was receiving medicine or not but my guess is that I was (at the lower dose). I hope they can continue to do phase 3 trial but they will need funds to do so. It did not melt the cirrhotic scarring but how great would it be if it prevented varices and their horrific consequences. It could save millions of lives .
I will reply again once I find out if I got the medicine.....who knows, maybe I just got lucky."

There are of course others who did not fare as well.
