Check Your Fridge, 4 Tons of Ground Beef Being Recalled

A Texas meatpacker has recalled nearly four tons of ground beef products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reported on Dec. 21.

Forth Worth-based PFP Enterprises LLC, also doing business as Texas Meat Packers, recalled approximately 7,570 pounds of ground beef after it was discovered that the products contained soy, which was not listed on the package label.

The recalled products have establishment number “EST. 34715” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The raw, frozen, ground beef items were produced on Sept. 28, 2017 and shipped to a distributor and institutional locations throughout Texas.

The labeling issue was discovered when FSIS received a complaint from a school about the product’s packaging. FSIS then conducted laboratory testing that confirmed the product contained soy and added water.

In particular, you should check your refrigerator and freezers for the following items:

40-lb. cases containing four 10-lb. bags of “85/15 Ground Beef Bulk” with item code 4013 and Patterson Food Processors printed on the label.
10-lb. cases containing two 5-lb. bags of “85/15 Ground Beef Bulk” with item code 4012 and Patterson Food Processors printed on the label.
While there haven’t been any confirmed reports of health issues due to consumption of these products, officials were asking that consumers who have purchased the misbranded products either throw them away or return them to their place of purchase.

The USDA has classified the situation as a “Class I recall,” which is given to “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

Consuming soy can cause serious problems for those allergic to the product.

Mild signs and symptoms of soy allergy include hives or itching in and around the mouth, but in some cases, an allergic reaction can be life-threatening, according to Mayo Clinic.

Serious symptoms to look out for include: difficulty breathing, throat swelling, a severe drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse, dizziness, lightheadedness and loss of consciousness.

People allergic to soy and other products depend on food labels and packaging to alert them if that item contains the allergen.

We’re glad someone caught this error before it caused a serious health issue for someone.
