I believe there is a mix... I wouldn't be surprised it there are some who are human too... I do hear some think NITE or CDEL are MMS that play games, but generally speaking those are just linked to brokerage accounts you, I, and anyone trades from... Which means it is not NITE or CDEL, but people they represent... And noting that person A might use Broker A and be bid sitting while person B might ALSO use broker A, and be ASK sitting... Which would appear like the MM that broker A uses, is ASK and BID sitting, and some would say that MM is playing games when it is just multiple people trading...

But many MMs are computer algorithms trading too, and that is not to say NITE and CDEL aren't doing it as well... I'd bet they are...

There are shorters, there are long, and I bet there are people on both sides who scheme ways to push the stock in their favor... But those schemes either take a butt load of money, and luck, along with patience, Or they probably have minimal profit gains when entirely self driven... Not to mention risky plays...

I wouldn't be surprise if some shady games do occur too... I've seen a few questionable things here and there... But like you said, it is not always some scam... And more times than not I doubt it is a scam...
