It appears to me that he didn't unblind the trial to get the interim results. If correct, he doesn't have the data. All he has are the rough reports given to him which don't tell him which patients are placebo vs drug.

You're right. It wouldn't have changed anything. But both of those answers can't be true.
Either he didn't have the results, as was suggested, or he chose not to make them public because doing so might have somehow jeopardized the results, as he said.

I don't think that pointing that out is spinning "it in a negative way", is it?
