My recommendation would be to check out the Shopify website and sign up for their forums to communicate with actual merchants any questions that you might have about what they believe makes it unique or "better" in terms of quality.

It's as much a service as anything, and the way I understand it, customer service is highly regarded by most merchants that use Shopify.

What they're working on, which is key, is streamlining the entire process for the relatively smaller merchant that wishes to start their own online business from the ground up. Their websites are actually quite sleek compared to a lot of the crap I've come across over the web over the years, and the growing number of partners helps them offer merchants different ways to customize their site and various ways ways to improve traffic.

The biggest complaint I've seen are those complaining about a lack of traffic that aren't selling through their Shopify account on an established Amazon site. This is an issue, but instead of looking at future sites like Amazon to work with, I believe they're already working on their own marketplace, and will continue to be ahead of the game in all areas of online retail. The fact that Amazon has already bowed out of this arena speaks for itself.
