Flo, so you got side tracked. I do that, start to do something and then spy something else that needs attention and end up digging into that.

I've used clear fingernail polish on brass. I had an old Spanish-style house years ago that had brass hinges, doorknobs and fixtures. For the smaller stuff the nail polish was easy to apply and I didn't have the problem with over spray.

I like old brass as it has a great look.
