Director, Venture Investments
Johnson & Johnson – Menlo Park, CA

Johnson & Johnson Innovation JJDC (JJI JJDC) is J&Js Corporate Venture Capital subsidiary and makes equity investments in venture stage and publicly traded health care companies on behalf of Johnson & Johnson. JJI - JJDC enables the identification and onboarding of new products and technologies across all sectors of J&Js business. Investment companies include those in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical and surgical devices, health care information technology, diagnostics and consumer products. The Johnson & Johnson Innovation JJDC team is located at J&Js Innovation Centers around the Globe (London, Boston, Shanghai, Menlo Park/Silicon Valley) and in Tel Aviv, Israel and New Brunswick, NJ.

JJI JJDC is currently recruiting for a Director Venture Investments located at the California Innovation Center (CA IC) in Menlo Park, CA/South San Francisco. (Note: we are moving to South San Francisco in five months.) Key responsibilities include:

1)Identify and lead medical device (MD) and technology Investments including Deal Sourcing in line with sector strategies, Due Diligence, Negotiation, Structuring, Decision Making, Execution, and post Investment Management. Support other JJDC investors as needed.

2)Partner with MD New Venture Leads located in the CA IC, the Medical Science &Technology team and Center for Device Innovation team on transactional support.

3)Support management of Robotics Investments and their connectedness to JJI JJDCs investment in Verb Surgical. Support JJI JJDC Head on Verb Surgical BOD role thru Board Observer seat.

4)Manage all JJDC Financial and Deferred Tax Asset Investments to optimal exit
a.Point of contact for all deferred tax asset inquiries/relationship management
b.Identify buyers and negotiate and execute exits on non-strategic assets as they arise
c.Resolve all Financial or legacy positions that have experienced corporate dissolutions, reorganizations or bankruptcies to a position exit and partner with Finance team on monetization of deferred tax assets.

5)Key team member on development of New Company Creation capability for JJI.
a.Develop Playbook including detailed outline of recent successes
b.Create turnkey deployment solutions including network of preferred providers
c.Support transactional team as needed on all new company formation efforts.

6)Partner with JJDC Principal team to lead identification of non-traditional/alternative sources of capital syndication with the aim of reducing overall JJDC syndicate cost of capital requirements, particularly on equity investments with option structures.

7)Partner with JJDC Principal team to develop efficient Corporate Diligence model across JJDC to enhance existing Technical, Legal & Financial diligence processes. Serve as Corporate diligence specialist across JJDC transactions on as needed basis. Examples include coordinating:
a.Review of Corporate Structure
b.Review of 3rd party agreements including business development/licensing arrangements
c.Review of Corporate Documents (certificates of incorporation, shareholder agreements etc)
d.Detailed review of Executive Compensation Frameworks
e.Non-Financial Cap Table Diligence

8)Lead preparation of MD sector updates, in partnerships with Investors and Finance.


Qualifications
•A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required. A degree focus within Finance or Engineering focus is preferred.
•Minimum 3 years experience within a Venture Capital Group is required.
•Additional Business Development and/or M&A experience preferred.
•Minimum 3 years experience in the Medical Device field is required.
•Experience in the field of Robotics, ideally Surgical Robotics preferred.
•Experience with new company formation preferred.
•Strong communication and relationship building skills is required.
•Unfailing Integrity and record of Credo based behavior is required.
•Exceptional collaborator as a member of a working team is required.
•Skills in strategic thinking are required.
•Ability to travel up to 30% of time global and domestic travel required.
