In 2015, assets worth 15 billion USD, gross earnings equaling 1.2 billion USD, and customer deposits equaling 10.9 billion USD.

Across the continent of Africa, stashing cash under the mattress is still a norm. Only 3% of banking citizens have a credit card, leaving 97% to solely rely on the stashed cash or their nearest bank to get their money. However, in Kenya alone, nearly 40% of its banking citizens do not have direct access to their formal banking institution, meaning their nearest bank is more than just a bus ride away. These issues are becoming more predominant as we see the economic development of the continent of Africa. We see citizens having more cash but nowhere to put it, move it, or spend it.

In 2013, the Nigerian government paved the way to enable money transfer services both domestically and internationally. This prompted the United Bank for Africa (UBA) to search for a banking solution that could unite its customers continent wide and enable real time money movement, storage, and management.

As a progressive customer-service focused bank, UBA is on the forefront of transformational technology. UBA wanted to implement a solution across Africa that would enable anybody with a bank account to transfer funds immediately to anyone else at a low cost. UBA’s desire to enable social commerce by banking the underbanked has connected the continent through one mobile bill and pay system.

The United Bank for Africa holds offices in 19 underbanked countries in Africa: Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea Konakry, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Chad, Congo Drc, Congo Brazzaville. UBA needed a way to simplify banking to give its nine million customers direct access to their funds.

Along with our authorized sales agent in Africa, Centric Gateway, Inc (http://centricgateway.com/), MEC introduced the “e” platform to UBA as a single platform solution for multiple forms of payment. EmailMoni powered by “e”, fits the current infrastructure of mobile and internet billing and payments while further developing the world of finance by introducing a brand new solution. Mobile payments are easily processed through mobile app, web, email, text, social media, and card-less ATMs. This fits the needs of UBA by shrinking the world of banking into the palm of your hand.

EmailMoni enables real time instant electronic transfers from any UBA account to any bank account in Nigeria. Payments can be sent from any mobile device or computer via Facebook, Microsoft Outlook, email, or mobile app securely for one low cost. Plus, EmailMoni processes recurring billing and provides advanced invoicing. EmailMoni organizes all transactions to make it simple to track payments, refunds, bills, and the status of an invoice. The safe methodology and fraud systems employed ensure all payments are highly secure.

EmailMoni is integrated with ATMs making cash deposits and withdrawals more convenient. EmailMoni users can top-up airtime balances instantly as well as pay cable and electric bills. Billing and payments have never been this simple, secure and accessible.

MEC and UBA have transformed Africa’s banking system by introducing solutions to meet the needs of their customers. The African banking system has gained a “leg up” against international banking and payments FinTech competitors. This platform has united people, made lives simpler, and transformed the African banking industry into the model for the future of financial services globally.
