You are trying to look back in time which gives you the benefit of hindsight, but it's not reality.
From a business stand point, could you even get a SPA based on the ratio at that time? Who is financing the trial? Would funds have put up the money based on an EPA/AA ratio that there was not much science on and no SPA? Lowering TG's was accepted back when they were planning and starting the trial. They knew they could get the SPA.

Science...conducting a trial. Where does good ratio that effects outcomes start? What is the cutoff for not bad enough? Do you ignore trig levels? You only have one shot at the trial. There has been much science posted since in the last few years, but if I was basing my investment on the known science years ago, I would have less exposure. My exposure has gone up with what I feel is increased knowledge thanks to people on this board and new science that supports V, but that's today, not years ago.
