I apologize for the aesthetically unappealing speculation Dew.
Having been a marine bio major, aquarist ,and a fishing industry employee ( both retail, commercial and sport)...As well as learning tide pool grazing from old ladies of a number of ethnicities...I'm a bit looser than most.

Our AQB salmon could really thrive on the plague of small ( non commercial) urchins wreaking havoc in northern CA now. They are stripping the ocean bottoms and trashing the littoral marine habitat there, to the detriment of the abalone and fish populations. They could be harvested and the shells cracked for the cultivated salmon. Bet it'd color the flesh too.
Back in the 60s, i earnestly tried to establish the urchin fishery ( uni) in Santa Barbara to no avail. It's big now.
