XSLV (inception date Feb 2013) has done well lately mostly because of its huge overweighting in financials... often small banks that were terribly beaten down in the recession. Those stocks are often low volatility as well. On the plus side, its expense ratio is low at 0.25%.

I tend to look at my investments over periods of decades, not a year or a few years. Doubt XSLV will outperform when tested longterm in the future. A four-year performance slice, and in a strong bull market, provides almost no useable information about future performance.
