Good luck figuring out the investment method "du jour" of those "players." Every week they find another "can't fail" system. Read those posts and see.

Buffett was a brainy kid, graduating HS early and college in three years. He made many investments with the help of his father, including a farm and a gas station. He worked for Ben Graham who was on the board of Geico. Buffett bought shares in it.

Wikipedia discusses the role of multiple partnerships in leveraging his prosperity. But the partnerhips grew and attracted new investors like crazy because Buffett was a great stock picker.

BTW, while many of Buffett's early stocks were "cigar butts: worn out but with one good smoke left," he never bought penny stocks in the IHUB sense. I've seen it claimed that Buffett bought pennies early on, but that's not true. He acquired BRK (not his best investment) a NYSE apparel and textile maker for far less than the working capital per share. He also took control of BRK when he was 32 and fired the CEO.
