Scores of People in Biblical Garb Show What Christmas Is Really About — and Shatter a Guinness Book Record in the Process

More than 1,000 people came together Monday to break the record for the largest ever living nativity display in Provo, Utah, while inspiring Americans to admire the true meaning of the Christmas season.

Participants donning angel costumes, among other familiar biblical garb, descended upon Rock Canyon Park, where they proceeded to break the previous record of 889 participants that was set in the Guinness Book of World Records last year, according to Deseret News.

And it wasn’t just 1,039 people who came out en masse to take part in the display. The record-breaking nativity included a donkey, a camel and sheep as well.

While a central goal was to break the record, Austin Craig, one of the organizers, told Deseret News that his team was also aiming to elevate the importance of the true meaning of Christmas.

“We focus so much on what to buy and what specials there are,” he said. “What is Christmas really about? It’s about your faith.”

According to Craig, the effort — which will result in a video production featuring YouTube stars and music from “American Idol” star David Archuleta — was a multi-faith effort involving various Christian denominations.

“We want to bring that focus back on Jesus during the Christmas season, so that people remember that it’s about more than Santa and reindeer and presents and what’s in my stocking,” Craig said. “This is a time to remember the redeemer of the world.”
