InterDigital Adds Licensing Deals
Jun 06, 2003 (Communications Today/PBI Media via COMTEX) -- InterDigital Communications [Nasdaq: IDCC] subsidiary InterDigital Technology adds a licensing pact for its chip technology with wireless messaging and e-mail technology and service provider Research In Motion [Nasdaq: RIMM], and extends its licensing deal with consumer electronics manufacturer Sharp [OTC: SCHAY]. Under its agreement with RIM (Waterloo, Ontario), which covers wireless terminal units built to GSM/GPRS/EDGE standards, InterDigital (King of Prussia, Pa.) will receive an advance royalty payment and subsequent royalties on licensed product sold by RIM.
The contract extension with Sharp (Osaka, Japan) covers the sales of devices compliant with TDMA-based PDC and PHS standards. Sharp will make a multi-million dollar up-front payment and will remit royalties on each InterDigital-enabled PHS and PDC unit it sells through early 2008.
