Look at the Schools in Berkeley CA sometime. That bastion of far out lefties has two totally different school systems. One for people who don't want their kids in Public schools and one for people who have no alternative, or prefer public schools. Berkeley High School has this saying about it, "It is either Yale or Jail."

I know some people who live in this area. One couple put their kids in private schools. The other couple I knew, couldn't afford to, so after watching their daughter in the public school for a few years, they moved away to an area that had better/safer schools. I don't blame them. When I first started my first programming job I moved to San Fernando Valley. I went to sign up my daughter for school and they informed me that she was to be bused to a school in inner city LA. I'm sorry, but I know teachers who won't teach there because of the unsafe conditions, no way am I sending my child there. I don't think any child should have to go to school under those conditions. Yet these problems persist and I don't see it changing. Much of the public school system is just plain broken and has been for years. As much as I could over the years I had my kids in private schools. I was extremely satisfied with the teachers, classroom sizes and my children's development. The time my kids have spent in public schools has been anywhere from mediocre to horrible.
