there have always been private schools. there were private schools when I read the junior great books. thats not the factor. It is something else, and I think it is the education department itself. There is a great difference between the commonly accepted mores and norms of education departments and that of the general public (me).
My wife teaches education majors in college. they ask her if they have to know science or math to teach 6th graders. they think her classes are too hard. She tells them children in 5th grade know more than they do.
Educational theory is a disease. I remember when the new york regents decided to teach the new math in the sixties. It was a hot new idea in education circles. some of my greater family was affected. they never learned anything, being stuck in modal arithmetic rather than understanding geometry and the 3-4-5 rule.
