"AMERIGON Presentation
Charles LaRue, of Amerigon, Burbank, California, had been invited to give a presentation of his company's AudioNAV, which was described as a landmark navigator. Street signs and similar landmarks provide the location information to the system. The system utilizes voice recognition to provide a user-friendly interface. Two CPUs (one for speech I/O and one for routing) and a CD-Player interface make up the system. An audio-formatted CD, compatible with commercial auto radio/CD units, contains the geographic database and compressed speech information. An interface to the commercial radio/CD unit is required; interfaces have been engineered for units from Alpine, Eclipse, Sanyo, and Ford. A distance sensor (e.g., drive shaft rotation sensor) is used to sense distance traveled to permit the system to prompt the driver when a turn is approaching; GPS was deemed too costly to incorporate for this function. Projected cost for the capability was less than $500 plus the cost of the radio/CD player; this price was predicted to drop to $295 in 18 months."
