US strike group transits Suez Canal
Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST Jan. 30, 2007
A US Navy strike group led by the assault ship USS Bataan steamed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday on its way to join the buildup of American forces in the Middle East.
The Bataan, which entered Egyptian waters Monday, spent the night at the Mediterranean harbor of Port Said and was expected to leave the Egyptian part of the Red Sea later Tuesday, a Suez Canal official said, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the press.
The seven-vessel Bataan group includes 2,200 US Marines and sailors, helicopters and Harrier fighter jets, the Navy said in Bahrain.
The US Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, will be overseeing around 50 warships in the Mideast after the arrival of the Bataan and an American aircraft carrier group in February, said US Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown.
The Fifth Fleet normally commands a fleet of about 45 ships, about a third of them from US-allied navies, Brown said.
The Navy is in the midst of a regional buildup, with the group of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis on its way as well as 21,500 US soldiers being sent to Iraq. The carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is already in the region.
The United States has not had two carriers in the Mideast since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The Bataan will join a second amphibious assault ship, the USS Boxer, which was on port visit in Dubai on Tuesday.
Brown said the Pentagon recently extended the tour of duty of the Boxer's US Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is in Iraq.
The Bataan is on a routine six-month deployment to the region to conduct "maritime security operations" which includes boarding and searching ships suspected of carrying terrorists or nuclear components to Iran, the Navy said.

Thank-you Zigbee.
My provider will be Wild Blue at 1.5M
I called, and they said that they have no problems with streaming video after the initial 1.2 second latency, and had very few reported problems. They did say most of their problems were with the amount of buffering people set up.
Thanks, Shermann
Greetings - Thank-you for the note.
I have talked to Wild Blue, who will be handling the satellite service. The latency is .6 sec each way, so 1.2 seconds. They said that it is not suitable for VOIP, and most internet gaming (things like chess being an exception). Once the link has been established, there should be no problem with streaming video, as it is a connectionless type of application from the service provider to my PC.
Thank-you for your help,
Shermann
rhustang - Thank-you for the reply.
Living out in the boonies, I will be going to Satellite. The line check for DSL was a max of 168K. So I have a choice of 500k for 39.00, 1000k for 59.00, or 1500k for 69.00. Looks like I will be spending 69.00 a month for internet. Oh well - The peace and quiet is worth it!!!
Thanks, Shermann
Technical Question Here!!!
Does anyone know what the minimum required bandwith is to run the streaming videos, and have it work well???

US military: Afghan leaders steal half of all aid
By Gethin Chamberlain, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 1:12am GMT 29/01/2007
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=HKHYIP2JCZKMFQFIQMFCFGGAVCBQYIV0?xml=/news/200...
Corrupt police and tribal leaders are stealing vast quantities of reconstruction aid that is intended to improve the lives of ordinary Afghans and turn them away from the Taliban, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt.
In some cases, all the aid earmarked for an area has ended up in the wrong hands. Defence officials in the United States and Britain estimate that up to half of all aid in Afghanistan is failing to reach the right people.
Tribal and mosque leaders were warned at a meeting in Kandahar province that aid is intended for whole communities
Nato forces in the south of the country say some Afghan police are guilty of corruption and will steal aid if it is handed out. Tribal and mosque elders have also been accused of seizing goods, including building materials and fuel, and selling them in markets. A Pentagon official said thousands of cars and trucks intended for use by the Afghan police had been sold instead.
Last week, the US and European Union announced plans to spend an additional £7 billion on assistance to Afghanistan, of which £1.5 billion will be earmarked for reconstruction. A committee of MPs is to investigate the corruption, which has dogged operations in Afghanistan since the Taliban were driven from power in 2001.
James Arbuthnot, chairman of the Commons defence select committee, said the matter needed to be urgently addressed. "Corruption is something we will be examining," he said.
Nato commanders in southern Afghanistan are deeply concerned at the level of corruption but have resolved to press ahead with reconstruction projects in the hope of winning over the local population and improving security.
advertisementIn one recent example in Kandahar province, aid distribution went ahead despite fears that it would be stolen. Sergeant Major Denis Tondreau, in charge of delivering Canadian army aid to the Pashmul area, said the Afghan police unit in one village was known for corruption and extortion. "I have been told that if I bring aid to Pasab the police will steal it," he said. "They are just a bad, bad unit… extortion, corruption and use of drugs."
But people in the area said tribal and mosque elders were also guilty of stealing aid. In the nearby town of Panjwaii, workers said aid distributed by Nato's provincial reconstruction teams had not reached the ordinary people.
Abdul Ghany, 20, said: "When the soldiers came here they gave things to the rich people. The elders took things for themselves and we received nothing."
Noor Ullah, a police intelligence officer in the neighbouring Zharey district, said tribal leaders had to be persuaded that the aid was not intended for them alone. At a heated meeting he warned them: "The equipment is not to rebuild your own homes, it is for the mosques and the whole village. It is not for individuals, it is for the community. It is not for you to take and sell it."
Aid and reconstruction work are seen as key elements of the Nato strategy in Afghanistan, and were cited by the British Government as the main reason for deploying thousands of additional troops last year.
On Friday, Nato foreign ministers signalled that they would boost their military and economic contributions amid calls for more investment in development projects to win the support of the Afghan population. Liam Fox, the Conservative defence spokesman, said he had heard first-hand of corruption affecting the reconstruction programmes when he visited Afghanistan last summer. "There is increasing corruption from top government officials down, which is making efforts to get reconstruction off the ground much more difficult," he said.
Charles Heyman, a defence analyst and former British Army major, said millions of pounds earmarked for reconstruction were being siphoned off. "It almost comes with the programme," he said. "You have to build in an element of that into any programme because you know it will leak into people's pockets."
A joint report by the Pentagon and the US state department, circulated to congressional committees last month, concluded that the Afghan police force was corrupt to the point of ineffectiveness. One Pentagon official told The Sunday Telegraph that police officers had stolen and sold at least half of the equipment supplied by the US, including thousands of cars and trucks.
The Department for International Development said progress had been made. "We work closely with local people, the governor and representatives of the national government in drawing up projects, to make sure that what we do meets the needs of local people," said a spokesman.
Among the projects funded by the department are the purchase of uniforms and winter coats for the Afghan police, a hospital generator and a mortuary.
But it confirmed that some of the £2 million allocated to projects intended to help internal refugees had been diverted to build vehicle checkpoints.
America ‘Poised to Strike at Iran’s Nuclear Sites’ from Bases in Bulgaria and Romania
Report suggest that ‘US defensive ring’ may be new front in war on terror.
by Gabriel Ronay
President Bush is preparing to attack Iran's nuclear facilities before the end of April and the US Air Force's new bases in Bulgaria and Romania would be used as back-up in the onslaught, according to an official report from Sofia.
"American forces could be using their two USAF bases in Bulgaria and one at Romania's Black Sea coast to launch an attack on Iran in April," the Bulgarian news agency Novinite said.
The American build-up along the Black Sea, coupled with the recent positioning of two US aircraft carrier battle groups off the Straits of Hormuz, appears to indicate president Bush has run out of patience with Tehran's nuclear misrepresentation and non-compliance with the UN Security Council's resolution. President Ahmeninejad of Iran has further ratcheted up tension in the region by putting on show his newly purchased state of the art Russian TOR-Ml anti-missile defence system.
Whether the Bulgarian news report is a tactical feint or a strategic event is hard to gauge at this stage. But, in conjunction with the beefing up of America's Italian bases and the acquisition of anti-missile defence bases in the Czech Republic and Poland, the Balkan developments seem to indicate a new phase in Bush's global war on terror.
Sofia's news of advanced war preparations along the Black Sea is backed up by some chilling details. One is the setting up of new refuelling places for US Stealth bombers, which would spearhead an attack on Iran. "The USAF's positioning of vital refuelling facilities for its B-2 bombers in unusual places, including Bulgaria, falls within the perspective of such an attack." Novinite named Colonel Sam Gardiner, "a US secret service officer stationed in Bulgaria", as the source of this revelation.
Curiously, the report noted that although Tony Blair, Bush's main ally in the global war on terror, would be leaving office, the president had opted to press on with his attack on Iran in April.
Before the end of March, 3000 US military personnel are scheduled to arrive "on a rotating basis" at America's Bulgarian bases. Under the US-Bulgarian military co-operation accord, signed in April,2006,an airbase at Bezmer, a second airfield at Graf Ignitievo and a shooting range at Novo Selo were leased to America. Significantly, last year's bases negotiations had at one point run into difficulties due to Sofia's demand "for advance warning if Washington intends to use Bulgarian soil for attacks against other nations, particularly Iran".
Romania, the other Black Sea host to th US military, is enjoying a dollar bonanza as its Mihail Kogalniceanu base at Constanta is being transformed into an American "place d'arme". It is also vital to the Iran scenario.
Last week, the Bucharest daily Evenimentual Zilei revealed the USAF is to site several flights of F-l5, F-l6 and Al0 aircraft at the Kogalniceanubase. Admiral Gheorghe Marin, Romania's chief of staff, confirmed "up to 2000 American military personnel will be temporarily stationed in Romania".
In Central Europe, the Czech Republic and Poland have also found themselves in the Pentagon's strategic focus. Last week, Mirek Topolanek, the Czech prime minister, and the country's national security council agreed to the siting of a US anti-missile radar defence system at Nepolisy. Poland has also agreed to having a US anti-missile missile base and interceptor aircraft stationed in the country.
Russia, however, does not see the chain of new US bases on its doorstep as a "defensive ring". Russia's defence chief has branded the planned US anti-missile missile sites on Czech and Polish soil as "an open threat to Russia".
Sergey Ivanov, Russia's defence minister, spoke more circumspectly while emphasizing Moscow's concern. He said: "Russia is no worried. Its strategic nuclear forces can assure in any circumstance its safety. Since neither Tehran, nor Pyongyang possess intercontinental missiles capable of threatening the USA, from whom is this new missile shield supposed to protect the West? All it actually amounts to is that Prague and Warsaw want to demonstrate their loyalty to Washington."
Bush's Iran attack plan has brought into sharp focus the possible costs to Central and Eastern Europe of being "pillars of Pax Americana".

Drums of War and Orchestrated Hysteria about Iran
by Rodrigue Tremblay
"And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."
William Shakespeare (from "Julius Caesar")
"Governments constantly choose between telling lies and fighting wars, with the end result always being the same. One will always lead to the other."
Thomas Jefferson, (1743-1826), 3rd US President
"The United States no longer bothers about low intensity conflict. It no longer sees any point in being reticent or even devious. It puts its cards on the table without fear or favour. It quite simply doesn't give a damn about the United Nations, international law or critical dissent, which it regards as impotent and irrelevant."
Harold Pinter, 2005 Nobel Laureate for Literature, acceptance speech
I have believed for quite some time now that once the Bush-Cheney tandem reached a dead-end in Iraq, as was amply predictable, they would try to save face and camouflage their failure by raising the ante and launching a new war of aggression against Iran, all the while wrapping themselves in the flag. For that, see my article of April 16, 2006, where I wrote (after the disaster in Iraq): "Bush may thus be tempted to raise the ante and go after Iran to reclaim his 'Commander-in-Chief' mantle." I would add now that the Bush-Cheney duo want to complete what they started in Iraq during the few years they have left before them. Most military experts believe that Iran can be contained militarily. But, make no mistake about it; the main rationale behind the pressures being exercised upon Iran at this time has little to do with concerns about weapons of mass destruction, but a lot to do (as in 1953 when Mossadegh was overthrown) with this country's oil reserves and how it uses them. Regime change in Tehran; that's what the Bush-Cheney administration is after.
As to war preparations, the current situation resembles what prevailed during the fall of 2002, when lies and misinformation were used all over the place (by the administration and by the neocon press) to stir up passions against Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Today, the objectives are the same and the tactics used are also the same. Indeed, the same forces are at work in the same two countries—the U.S. and Israel—to exaggerate the military threats posed by Iran and to attempt to link Iran to the al-Qaida terrorist network in order to justify an attack. There is something very pathetic about the rage with which the pro-war lobby is beating the drum for military action against Iran, and the Bush-Cheney administration's musings about using nuclear weapons of mass destruction.. It is political madness in action. But why is such madness occurring seemingly only in these two countries?
The first thing to be understood is that all these wars in the Middle East have been planned for more than ten years by a small group of Washington Neocons who penned a document, in 1996, calling for such wars, in order to balkanize the Middle East for Israel's sake and to allow American companies to take control of the enormous oil reserves present in that part of the world. In 1996, in a report on strategy prepared by the Institute for Advanced Strategic and Political Studies (a think-tank created by AIPAC) and titled "A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm," future advisors to the Bush-Cheney administration (Perle, Feith, Wurmser, etc.) proposed "removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq," and then to go on "engaging Hizballah, Syria, and Iran."
The Clinton administration refused to embrace fully this incendiary strategy, but large campaign contributions behind the scheme and promises of an oil bonanza persuaded oil-men Bush II and Cheney that American military power could be used profitably to implement the neocon plan. That is why, after 9/11, the Bush-Cheney administration requested a blanket approval Resolution from the American Congress to take control militarily and reorganize politically the entire Middle East. The senators reduced this mandate to Iraq, but the Bush-Cheney intentions were crystal clear: Total domination of the entire Middle East
The second overlooked reality is the tight grip the pro-Israel neocon establishment holds over the Bush-Cheney White House, both sides of Congress and the American corporate media. For years now, not only the American Neocons but also the Israeli government itself has demanded that the U.S. attack Iran. Its Lobby has spearheaded the campaign. In Colin Powell's words, the 'JINSA crowd' at the Defense Department, which is full of transferees from the neocon Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), has been most active and effective. What's more, we have been warned: Israel's Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz said it: "2007 (will be) the decisive year,” to deal with Iran. —He might be proven right. He made this comment just after he talked, on January 21, (2007) with visiting U.S. Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns. Besides, the Israeli government has usually gotten what it wanted from the Bush-Cheney administration, even if it meant committing the United States to a disastrous policy.
Just as for the Iraq war, the coming Iran war will be orchestrated by the same Neocons, and will also be a product of a campaign led by the Israeli government and its all powerful fifth column in America. On November 15, 2006, for example, Israel's outgoing U.S. ambassador Danny Ayalon seemed to have been privy to Bush's intentions: "U.S. President George W. Bush will not hesitate to use force against Iran in order to halt its nuclear program." — On January 21 (2007), chief Neocon and former director of the U.S. Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee, Richard Perle,, made it very clear when he said: "If all options were exhausted in the attempt to stop the Iranian nuclear project, and US military involvement was needed for a successful strike on Tehran, President George Bush would give the green light for the operation."
American politicians of both major political parties also seem to trip over each other in their rush to go to Israel and declare that their country, the USA, should attack Iran. In the last two months, a host of presidential candidates did just that, from John McCain, to Hillary Clinton, to Mitt Romney, to John Edwards, all pledging allegiance to a pre-emptive defense of Israel with a war of aggression against Iran. The last in line is former Senator John Edwards a Democratic presidential candidate who, in a mid-January trip to Israel, also established his own credentials for becoming president by declaring: "Americans can be educated (sic) to come along with what needs to be done with Iran." And, to be sure he is well understood, he added: "All options are on the table to ensure that Iran will never get a nuclear weapon."
And third, less we forget, a war against Iran has also been promoted by Bush's Christian fundamentalist supporters. The latter meet frequently in the White House to discuss foreign policy, and some are openly praying for a coming Armageddon that they see happening soon.
And that is where we stand today, after the disastrous 2003 American-led war against Iraq, the murderous, American-supported Israeli war against Lebanon in 2006, and now, with the table being set for an American-initiated war of aggression against Iran, possibly involving the use of nuclear weapons. This is all part of a grand Middle East neocon plan that we see slowly unfolding under our very eyes.
We may ask, who is happy with all these successive illegal and immoral wars of aggression? Answer: the Israeli government, its sycophants in the U.S., the arms industry and certain big oil interests who have already mapped their foray in the region, plus George Bush's wild-eyed fundamentalist supporters, for whom an attack on Iran is just what God has ordered.
Who is unhappy? The young Americans who are sent half way around the world to die or be maimed, and their families left behind; the people in the Middle East, who are bombed and massacred and who see their countries destroyed and their resources stolen; the American taxpayers, who are footing the obscene bill for these whimsical and imperialistic wars; and the entire world population who look on, unbelievingly, to this return to calculated barbarism and lawlessness, and who witness, powerless, the destruction of the United Nations.

Kerry Backs Up Iran's N. Rights
TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Former US presidential nominee John Kerry voiced full support for the Islamic Republic's right to use civilian nuclear technology on the basis of the rules and regulations of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NTP).
Addressing a world Economic Forum meeting in Davos Switzerland on Saturday, Kerry also strongly rejected West's demanded prerequisites for the resumption of nuclear talks with Iran.
Kerry, whose remarks followed a speech by Iran's former President Seyed Mohammad Khatami, stated his support for Khatami's views, and said Americans find out - only when they are outside their country - that the world is different from what they imagine.
"We should give up pessimism and pick up a realistic view," he said, and further stressed the need for the US to change its policies towards the world countries and issues.
The US politician also approved of Khatami's views about increased tension and violence in the world, and concluded, "As Mr. Khatami said, violence increased in the region after the occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq and Bin Ladenism."
Earlier in the same meeting, former Iranian President Seyed Mohammad Khatami said that violence and terror have roots outside Iraq, and stressed that anyone willing to help to the settlement of the Middle-East problem should first prove his impartiality.
Noting the undesirable equations formed in the Middle-East, Khatami said, "If we intend to establish security in the world, then we should form an equation which serves democracy, stability and development."
Describing the world's indifference in the face of the Palestinian crisis as a catastrophe, he asked, "Why should the existence of a nation be ignored and why shouldn't a legal government like Hamas which has ascended to power through democratic elections be recognized?"
"Respecting people's votes and views, repatriation of the refugees and restoration of public rights set the only solution to the Middle-East crisis," the former Iranian president added.
He said anyone willing to help to the settlement of the ongoing crisis in the Middle-East should substantiate his impartiality. "And any plan for the region must be based on justice, partnership of all regional and Muslim states and restoration of the Palestinians' rights."
Referring to Iraq, he said that the present catastrophe in that country is the result of violence and terror which has foreign roots, and stated that the religious conflicts in Iraq are a phenomenon created by foreign elements.
"The United States is still dreaming of conquering Iraq," Khatami said, mentioning that the United States' attitude and the US administration's dismissal of the Baker-Hamilton report show that Washington has not yet comprehended the realities dominating Iraq.
Khatami further voiced Iran's strong support for an integrated Iraqi government, and called on all relevant parties to provide extensive and all-out assistance for the Iraqi government in soothing tensions, establishing security and reconstructing the country's economy.
Noting Iran-US relations, he said that the two countries are suffering from the wide gap of distrust, adding that the resumption of relations requires mutual understanding.
"It is not possible to resume relations while Iran shows flexibility and the counterparty pursues a policy of regime change in a country which enjoys the most democratic political system in the region," Khatami noted.
Also criticizing Washington's policies on Iran, he reminded, "Building confidence and provoking Arabs against Iran are contradictory measures."
