Republicans said they spent millions at Trump’s DC hotel out of convenience. They’ve all but deserted its replacement.

https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-investigations/republicans-said-they-spent-millions-at-trumps-dc-hotel-out-of-convenience-theyve-all-but-deserted-its-replacement/
Republicans in Congress have adopted a missionary’s zeal for rooting out presidential corruption and profiteering. There is no detail too insignificant or inconclusive for them to trumpet on cable news as the latest evidence of foreign influence or illicit cash flows. This marks a striking turnaround from the four years of the Trump administration, when Republicans in Congress went out of their way to bankroll Donald Trump’s presidential profiteering and conflicts of interest.
Nowhere was that passion for filling Trump’s pockets more apparent than at his DC hotel, which brought in more than $3 million from Republican political organizations during Trump’s term in office, more than at any other Trump property. During that time, Trump’s businesses were being used by foreign governments and special interests to gain access and influence not just over Trump and his administration, but also the powerful lawmakers who could be found bumping elbows in the lobby.
However, since becoming a Waldorf Astoria in 2022, GOP spending at the largely unchanged luxury hotel in the Old Post Office building has all but disappeared. This directly conflicts with how Republicans explained their choice of venue at the time. When questions arose about their patronage of the then-president’s business, Republicans brushed off concerns of corruption saying that Trump’s DC hotel was simply a convenient location near Capitol Hill for lawmakers and political operatives to socialize, that they would be there regardless of who owned it.
As such, it would be reasonable to expect that Republicans would continue to frequent the hotel after Trump sold it and it rebranded as a Waldorf Astoria in June 2022, leaving many of the building’s luxury public spaces largely unchanged from its time as a Trump property. Yet political spending by GOP groups at the new hotel is virtually nonexistent, clocking in at a measly $37,878, according to the FEC’s most recent data covering the 17 months from June 2022 to the end of November 2023. For comparison, GOP groups spent $1,570,239, or 40 times that, in the interval between June 2018 and November 2019—the last comparable period when the building was still under Trump ownership. In fact, the amount spent since it opened is just a quarter of the $154,500 that then-Speaker Paul Ryan’s joint fundraising committee spent there in a single day in 2018, and a fraction of the $435,034 that Republican groups have spent at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and residence, since the Waldorf Astoria opened.
Last year, CREW reported that from its opening in June 2022 to the midterm elections, Republican officials, candidates and fundraising committees spent less than $2,000 at the Waldorf Astoria. In the same five-month period in 2018, Republicans spent more than 400 times that amount with $867,000 paid to the Trump Hotel.
Throughout Trump’s presidency customers at the hotel asserted that its downtown location and close proximity to the White House and Capitol building made it a convenient choice for gathering. Future-Speaker Kevin McCarthy disregarded concerns about spending at the Trump Hotel, and said that Trump’s properties are “just like any other hotel.” During Trump’s presidency, McCarthy’s committees spent over a quarter-million dollars at Trump properties and earned Trump’s support for his bid for Speaker of the House. The day after T-Mobile announced its merger with Sprint, nine T-Mobile executives stayed at Trump Hotel. CEO John Legere tweeted that the hotel was “convenient” and that the stay would not “have any influence on regulatory decisions.” The Trump administration later approved the merger. The CEO of an energy trade group and Trump’s own campaign director also asserted that the Trump Hotel was a convenient choice for their events.
Like the Trump Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria holds a five-star status and is additionally home to a restaurant by a world-famous chef. Prior to his run for president, Trump’s businesses—drowning in debt—never took in more than $100,000 from political groups in any single year. With the help of foreign governments and special interests, Republicans helped put Trump back in the black by pouring millions in donor money into his hotel and other properties, saying it was out of convenience. In reality, it seems they just like putting donor money in Trump’s pocket.

Sometimes youtube links don't work by just copying the address, but if you right click on the video and select "imbed code" and paste that then it works (larger video below if it is showing). If that doesn't work for you (as is now sometimes working and sometimes not for me), then just copy the inside code "kCDMQqDUtv4" part of it (or similar part of the code for other videos) and put it between ["yt"].....["/yt"] without the colon marks around the yt's, and it will work also (smaller video below). Nice jazz tune.

DOJ investigating Cori Bush’s campaign for spending on security services
BY MYCHAEL SCHNELL - 01/30/24 1:12 PM ET
https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4437767-cori-bush-doj-investigation/
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) for her campaign’s spending on security services, the congresswoman confirmed on Tuesday.
She said she is “fully cooperating” with the probe and denied any wrongdoing.
“First and foremost, I hold myself, my campaign, and my position to the highest levels of integrity. I also believe in transparency which is why I can confirm that the Department of Justice is reviewing my campaign’s spending on security services. We are fully cooperating in this investigation, and I would like to take this opportunity to outline the facts and the truth,” Bush wrote in a statement.
The confirmation from Bush — which was pushed out from her campaign account — came one day after the House clerk disclosed on the floor that the office of the House sergeant at arms had received a grand jury subpoena for documents from the DOJ.
Bush on Tuesday disclosed that she is also under investigation by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the House Ethics Committee, and she is cooperating with both. She said, however, that the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), the nonpartisan entity that reviews and refers matters to the Ethics Committee, did not find any wrongdoing against Bush and voted unanimously to dismiss the case.
Punchbowl News reported earlier on Tuesday that Bush was the subject of the DOJ investigation. The Hill reached out to the DOJ for comment.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), a nonpartisan ethics watchdog, filed a complaint with the FEC in March 2023 requesting that it investigate Bush for potential personal use of campaign funds.

I received the following responses from our report on Donald Trump turning the White House into a pill-mill and haphazardly dispensing massive amounts of fentanyl, versed, ketamine, hydrocodone, provigil, etc:
“Ben, as an anesthesiologist, i would love to know why anyone outside of an OR procedure suite received versed. All those meds are in our arsenal, as anesthesiologists, and this is absolutely wild”
“This is odd. Outside of Provigil and Ambien, a lot of those medicines are used in surgical procedures.”
“As a pharmacist, if I kept records of controlled substances in this manner, and the DEA or state inspector came in to my pharmacy and saw this, I would be doing time. Unbelievable.”
“This is absolutely nuts. As a disabled vet, I can't even get mild pain relievers without multiple doctors and a pharmacist all agreeing it is more helpful than harmful. Which, by the way, I'm happy that is the way it works. A pharmacist spotted a conflict between medications prescribed by my heart doctor and my primary care doctor. That basically saved my life. If the WH pharmacy was run like a candy store, they honestly put people's lives in danger. Disgusting! And if I understand the reports, many of these people weren't eligible to get these medications from the WH medical staff.”

New House Subpoena Sparks Wave of Theories
Jan 29, 2024 at 3:06 PM EST

By Andrew Stanton
Weekend Staff Writer
House of Representatives Sergeant at Arms William McFarland announced his office was served a grand jury subpoena by the Department of Justice (DOJ), sparking a wave of theories on social media on Monday afternoon.
McFarland formally notified House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, of a subpoena on Monday. Details about the subpoena, including the investigation to what it is related to, remained unknown, causing some legal experts and political observers to speculate about what it could be about.
Susan Cole, the reading clerk of the House of Representatives, read the notification from McFarland on the House floor Monday afternoon.
"This is to notify you formally, pursuant to Rule 8 of the House of Representatives, that the office of the sergeant at arms for the House of Representatives has been served with a grand jury subpoena for documents issued by the US Department of Justice. After consulting with the office of general counsel, I have determined that compliance with the subpoena is consistent with the rights and privileges of the House," she read.
House subpoena sparks theories
The sergeant at arms is the chief law enforcement and protocol officer of the House of Representatives, according to the House's official website. In that position, McFarland is tasked with overseeing "all issues relating to the safety and security of Members of Congress and the Capitol complex."
Neither the DOJ nor the Office of the Sergeant at Arms has confirmed what the subpoena is related to, leading to social media speculation. None of theories circulating online could be independently verified by Newsweek.
A DOJ spokesperson declined to comment when reached by Newsweek Monday afternoon.
"Keep in mind, Rep Scott Perry's communications seized pursuant to a search warrant in 2022 were JUST finally released to Jack Smith's office after a prolonged 'speech or debate' privilege battle that Perry mostly lost. I wonder if this new subpoena is related," wrote the Mueller, She Wrote podcast account on X, formerly Twitter.
Perry's cell phone was seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) in August 2022 as part of the investigation into the attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The Republican congressman from Pennsylvania has not been charged with any crimes.
"What grand jury? The Trump stuff was already indicted," asked lawyer Bradley P. Moss in his own X post.
Some social media users speculated about whether the subpoena could be related to January 6, 2021, Capitol riot investigations. During the riot, a group of former President Donald Trump's supporters violently protested the 2020 presidential election results after Trump claimed without evidence that the election was stolen from him due to widespread voter fraud.
Meanwhile, more than 140 Republicans voted against certifying then-President Elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory. Trump, the frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, and more than 1,200 individuals involved in the riot have been charged in the case, but no members of Congress have faced charges. The former president maintains his innocence in the case.
"January 6th-related? Something else?" asked user @TrumpTaxes.
"The House sergeant at arms... DOJ documents... grand jury subpoena...Hmmm... sounds like some congressional insurrectionist are soon about to find out..." posted user @HadleySheley.
"Possibilities: - investigation related to January 6 - the time that one Democrat pulled the fire alarm in the House - something else," posted lawyer Robert J. DeNault.
He referred to Representative Jamaal Bowman, a New York Democrat, pulling a fire alarm at the Cannon building last September. His office has said he believed pulling the alarm would open a door, not trigger an alarm.

May have something to do with subpoena power that Jack Smith empowered a grand jury to have and part of proving intent. Maybe having to do with the 14 calls for the National Guard on J6 that were all denied by Chris Miller. First one from the Sgt at Arms 5 minutes after the first breach of Capitol grounds. Especially the last point - Trump would never say that someone HE works with has “learned” something from failure - as that admits that failure occurred proximal to him, and by extension - he could be arguably responsible for some of it. He could NEVER admit or suggest that.

The multi-disciplinary consultation (MDO) has taken place, I spoke to my team from the Euthanasia Expertise Center, and now I can finally announce my last day.
On Saturday, January 27, my team will come to my home and the euthanasia will take place between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM .
I chose to make the date and time public because you have all been so excited for this moment with me. I know from experience how supportive it can be to know when it is happening, so that you can reflect on it for a moment or light a candle if you wish. 🕯
Just a request from me: please wait until after 2:30 PM before posting commemorative pictures and the like.
And please don't wish me a good trip, I wish I was going on a trip (a beach holiday would be nice 🏖) but I think I'm going back to what it was like before I was born: no existence, no consciousness. Ultimate peace.
(That part should have been the funny, light-hearted part of the post but unfortunately it turned dark again, sorry. 🫢)
The people invited to the farewell service (in-person or via livestream) will receive a funeral card by post or via social media.
I don't know if I will manage to write another post, but if not: I would like to thank everyone who has been there for me during my illness - and especially in the time before I announced my euthanasia wish. Whether it was by having a nice chat with me on social media, by occasionally asking how things are going, by having deep conversations about suffering and death, or by sending nice animal videos when you couldn't find the words. Whether we have known each other long and well or only a little, it doesn't matter. You have made me feel less alone and I am very grateful for that.
Love, Lauren
Edit: PS Regarding leaving comments: thanks for all the supportive, sweet messages. All messages with unkind texts, unsolicited advice, or references to religion will be removed. (Praying is okay.) Be respectful to me and those around me. Thank you.
