I was running XP on my old (very old) Terminator I built to Bruce's specifications many years ago. Hated to retire it, but was just encountering a lot of conflicts and slowdowns with it.
Bought this little Lenovo thinkpad for $200 preloaded with Win10 Pro months ago mainly so I could see what I thought of the new OS before deciding whether to spring for an Apple or not. Barely touched it until I decided to retire the Terminator. Took some getting used to Win10 after XP (which IMO was the best OS MS ever put out), but now that I'm used to it and have battened down all the hatches it does everything I need it to do. I don't allow it to get my mail, nor do I store any files from WordPerfect or Quicken on it, but on a thumb which I connect whenever I need those files. I have disabled the syncing and the OneDrive and Cortana, etc., and did a bunch of disallowing of various apps access to stuff, so feel I've done what I can to limit being spied upon as far as possible. I have it hooked up to a dockingstation, so enjoy the same comfortable computing experience I did with my old Terminator but this is way faster.
One thing that finally drove me to make the change was hearing so many stories of attacks on XP now that it is no longer supported, and the inability to update many of the old programs I had on it. As this was my trading computer, I was always very careful to avoid infections, and worried about that now XP is no longer supported.
Newly
Should go ok for you. Good luck.
Newly
I guess using that gpedit.msc command worked to stop auto updates because I just got notified of pending updates to download. Glad something is working, LOL. Getting used to the new setup now and finding things again. . .
Newly
Alvik, I took a look at the links you posted and note the info actually applies mainly to people who have upgraded to Win10 from an earlier OS and are in consequence encountering a variety of problems with both the initial upgrade and the Anniversary update released today.
I bought this computer with Win10 Pro already installed so I didn't encounter any problems of that type downloading the Anniversary update. The only trouble I'm having is digesting the changes it made to my computer, but as I play with it now, I'm becoming more comfortable with it.
If you didn't encounter problems upgrading to Win10, I doubt you'd have problems with the Anniversary update but it does make some dramatic changes to the interface.
Newly
Trust me, it wasn't my choice to download and install it!
Newly
Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately after installing version 1607 that area's user choices were grayed out and updates were automatically downloading and installing with no notification to me, so I went in using the gpedit.msc command and reset it to notify me, but that required a restart and the restart allowed the auto download and instllation of KB 3176929 and now I can't find anything.
Newly
Actually as to stopping auto updates and being notified of pending updates, this is what I did:
Windows Flag button + R
gpedit.msc
Computer Config
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Updates
Config Auto Updates
Selected "Enable" radio button, then "Notify for download and notify for install", OK
Restart
However, I haven't been able to go back and check whether that worked to stop auto updates and change to notify me because the restart required after I made that change caused new updates to be installed and now can't find where to check it. Ugh. It used to be when I clicked the start button I could then click settings and get the choices I recognized and wanted. That no longer works. Guess I'm gonna have to spend hours playing with this new setup and learning how to do what I want to do. I suppose I could do a restore but it will probably just download that update again on its own anyway. . . sigh.
Newly
When I last shut down Win10 decided to install more updates which took about an hour and now everything is changed. Beware of installing KB3176929 as it changes the start menu and will delete some programs you installed. All the instructions I wrote down so I knew how to reach different functions are now changed. I can't even figure out how to get the search icon back onto the taskbar. I thought I was done with fighting with Win10 and had it pretty much as I wanted it and now everything is changed again. I really, Really, REALLY hate Microsoft and Win10. This is the last computer I will buy that runs windows and I wouldn't even have bought this except it was only $200 and I wanted to sample Win10. My next computer will be an Apple.
Newly
Hey Flo. Yet another problem with Win10.
I originally did some tweaking that allowed me to choose "notify me re updates". Since the last windows update (version 1607), these settings I tweaked were eliminated and all updates are now done automatically with no setting one can tweak to prevent this. Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I don't like auto updates on anything. MS may own the operating system, but I OWN THE MACHINE! Damn, Apple is looking more and more attractive. . .

Computer is working perfectly since I set up that screensaver. Now I have bubbles for a time, then it goes into hybridsleep which is faster to wake from than hibernation.
Tnx again for your help, Flo.
Newly
Apparently YOU are missig the point. There are thousands upon thousands of boards and posts on this site daily. Surely you do not honestly expect that iHub Admin should spend their time ascertaining the truth of the information presented in all of those posts. That would be ridiculous.
If you believe a post to be deceptive, simply refute it by replying to it with facts that convinced you of its deceptive nature. A truth is usually more easy to accept then an untruth. . .
Newly
I'm going to set the sleep etc. timers back from Never to whatever and then walk away and check back to see what happens, but I do believe you solved it, Flo.
Thanks again. Will let you know. . .
Newly
OK, I set the screen saver for 5 min and it took longer than that but I just got back to the computer and the screen saver was on and computer had not shut down so I am cautiously optimistic that the problem is solved.
Thank you so much, Flo. Don't know what I'd do without you when these problems come up.
Newly
Me, too. Will leave the machine now so I can see if it will work or not. . .
Newly
Flo, you are a treasure! I had done a search and came up with all kinds of stuff but nothing about the screen saver and it never occurred to me that I had, in fact, never set a screen saver on this computer. Oddly, it was only today that it began shutting down every few minutes. No idea why it wasn't doing that all along. Anyway, I have now set a screen saver and unchecked the box, and will have to wait and see what happens. I'll check back in later and let you know.
Tnx.

I'm having yet another problem with Win10 which just started today.
After only 3 min of no activity, it automatically turns off the monitor and the internet connection and can only be restarted by pressing the power button. Then I have to once again deal with the problem of the taskbar not auto hiding each time it restarts (Task Manager, Windows Explorer, restart).
I have set both screen settings and turn off settings to NEVER. I have gone into Power Options, clicked Change Plan Settings, then Change Advanced Power Settings, then expanded Sleep and checked that all indications of hybernation are turned off.
No change. Still shuts down after 3 min or less of inactivity whether on battery or plugged in. Driving me nuts all day. Anyone have any suggestions? God I miss my old WinXP. . .

You are correct, naked Puts can be covered at any time prior to expiry. Level 5 options permission allows selling naked Puts or Calls. That said, the account must be a margin account and have an amount of cash+margin to cover the obligation incurred in these trades (I believe this varies from broker to broker, not sure).
Restrictions on naked option trades vary from broker to broker in cash accounts (IRAs) but all forbid options trades that could potentially result in a short position since short positions are not allowed in IRAs. For example, I believe IB allows all options trades except naked short Calls which is the most liberal I have come across.
Here are the basic levels of option permissions:
Level 1 - Sell covered calls
Level 2 - Buy puts, buy calls
Level 3 - Buy and sell combinations (spreads and straddles)
Level 4 - Sell naked (uncovered) equity puts
Level 5 - Sell naked (uncovered) equity calls
Level 6 - Sell naked (uncovered) index calls and puts
Newly
Au contraire! I sell short Puts on SPY nearly every day and usually Buy to Cover before the close. Perhaps European options must be held to expiration (not sure) but I can guarantee you American options do not and can be covered any time prior to expiry.
Newly
No problem, cintrix. And you are absolutely correct, generally one would not sell again on or near the ex-div date as the stock price will usually drop by the amount of the dividend. On US exchanges, it is the exchange on which the stock trades that makes the price adjustment since the amount of the dividend reduces the company's market cap, but the reduction in price will usually only occur if the dividend amount is more than 10% of the price of the underlying stock.
Cheers, Newly
PS tnx for the PM. . .
Yes, I do a lot of these dividend capture plays, but agree, there is a lot of confusion as to exactly how this is done. I thought the first line in my original post stated it clearly, but to reiterate:
Short answer: one must own the stock at least one day prior to the ex-div date to be entitled to receive the dividend. . . period.
Newly
Please reread my post, Cintrix, as that is exactly what I said. One must own the stock before the ex-div date to receive the dividend as you state because "The ex-dividend date is defined as the day on which a trade will settle too late to give the buyer the dividend payment".
Newly
See msg 4510, my reply to Enserch.
Newly
Short answer: one must own the stock at least one day prior to the ex-div date to be entitled to receive the dividend, but not on the record date itself or on the payout date.
To elucidate, due to the T-3 rule (3 days to settle a trade), one must buy the stock at least 3 days prior to the record date in order to be considered a shareholder entitled to the dividend. Again due to the T-3 ruling, one can immediately sell one's shares on the ex-div date and still receive the dividend since that sale trade will not be settled until the day after the record date. The payout date can be long after the ex-div and record dates, and one does not need to own the stock on that date.
Newly
How annoying. Well, I'll take a look at that little app you posted and in the interim will use my platform with fan that the laptop sits atop.
Tnx for your help.
Newly
Thanks for that screenshot, Elis. The Resource Monitor in Win10 gives me all that info except the temp. I suppose I shouldn't worry about the temp but this Win10 is a cheap laptop that I am now using with a docking station for all my trading, etc., so it is running like 12 hrs/day and I don't want to have it overheat. Don't know what the odds are of that happening, though.
I do have a small stand I bought years ago for my Acer laptop (2008) and never used but it is a bit annoying because the fan has a High and Low setting, but no Off, and it is a pain to connect add disconnect it given my setup.
Anyway, tnx for your help. I may download that. . .
Newly
I'll check it out. Tnx.
Newlu
So, does this mean there is no builtin temp control in Win10? Tnx
Newly
Can anyone tell me how to check the running temp of the CPU in Win10? I found the Resource Mgr which tells me everything but. TIA
Newly
My computer made me do it. . .
Newly
We've all done it to ourselves at least once somehow or other. I prefer to blame it on iHub, LOL.
Newly
Have you accidentally blocked yourself?

I think after so many years of use a lot of crap builds up. On my old Sony years ago I used to completely wipe the disk every month and reload everything from scratch. Took a couple of hours but kept things nice and clean. Then I got lazy, LOL.
Anyway, I'll keep that old Terminator to use on old programs where I've kept years and years of data which can't be moved. I dread the day it gives up the ghost but I do still have a laptop running XP as a backup. I just got rid of every other computer I ever owned (an old, still working, IBM AT complete with a working daisywheel printer and a black&orange monitor, a still working Win95 Sony with one of those huge old working monitors and a good Sony running XP with a flatscreen monitor, plus two old printers. Even had all the original disks and documentation for all of them, LOL. Been lugging these around starting in the mid-'80's so it's about time I cleaned house, LOL. Took out and kept all the HDs before junking them. . .
Newly
Yes, thank you, it did, but that XP machine was getting very long in the tooth with so many other problems, I decided to retire it for now. In its place, I hooked up a Win10 laptop I have (and never use) to a docking station, and still getting everything set up the way I like it. Many programs I use daily I had not updated in ages, and now I'm using the new versions which are different and sometimes I can't immediately figure out how to do what I want to. But slowly but surely the fog is clearing, LOL.
Newly
Yes, Bruce introduced me to building as well and I thoroughly enjoyed it and his thread. I'd love to build again, but quite frankly, it is easier using a laptop with a docking station and anyway without Bruce's help I wouldn't know how to start.
I remember when I finished putting my terminator together and was ready to push the "On" button for the first time, I hesitated, afraid it was going to just blow up or catch fire or something. Finally mustered up the nerve, pushed the button, and my Terminator, Linus, was up and running. Served me very well over the years due to Bruce's excellent design, and just yesterday I retired it and boxed it up for now. I am moving soon, so I will reconnect it after I get settled in because there are programs on it I use regularly that cannot be run in Win10 and I'm not willing to dump them and lose years and years of data.
Bruce was a great resource for all of us who love computers. I remember him fondly. . .
Newly
I miss him, too. I think of him often. Today I finally retired my old Terminator I built to his specs so many years ago now, and I thought again about him and all that happened.
They say you are never really gone as long as one person remembers you, and I believe Bruce had a lot of virtual friends here on iHub who will be remembering him for a long time to come.
R.I.P., Bruce, you did not die, you merely sleep. . .
Newly
I've been thinking a lot about Bruce lately, remembering how he helped me build my Terminator. I can't help but think how special it was for him to have met and married Karen so shortly before his time of trial which meant he did not have to go through it all alone. I'm sure it was very hard on Karen but I hope she also realizes how much having her with him must have meant to Bruce during his final months. We should all have someone who loves us by our side during our final moments to help ease our passing into the next life. I'm happy to think Bruce had that -- it is a blessing we all deserve. . .
Newly
Tnx, Kitt. Yes, I did set a restore point prior to all this and also backed up my registry (which I do on a regular basis). I am familiar with working directly in DOS (used to be important to know back when I got my first computer in the early '80's) and also ran many of the system tools in Windows. All seems ok now, but we shall see.
Newly
My Avast hasn't been able to update the virus database since 6/15. I have now deleted all antivirus programs and many MANY old files, and installed Panda. Not sure I'll stay with it, but OK for now. Tnx.
Newly
Thanks, Kitt. I'll take a look at those.
Newly
Thanks, BD. Having tried just about everything else, that is the very conclusion I have come to. The most likely suspects to begin with were a virus that got past all my security, or all my security itself is causing the problem. Certainly feels like a conflict of some sort (I've had them in the past with more than one Java on the system so I'm careful about that now).
Decided today is the day to delete all my antivirus programs (although only Avast is supposed to be doing active monitoring) and see what happens. Will also be deleting every other program I don't use that is cluttering up my system. Time to clean house!
