Yes, that is probably my best bet. Bruce recommended Acer to me way back when, and I have been very pleased with my current Acer laptop and only wish to replace it as I need more power for running the newer programs.
Tnx for your reply.
Newly
Tnx for the replies, guys. Don't really want a Dell and I prefer a smaller screen for a laptop. Thought about building another desktop (built one years ago to Bruce's specs and enjoyed it) but I really prefer a laptop with a docking station -- that's the setup I currently am using and it serves my needs well.
Tnx again.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and wonder if anyone here can give me some recommendations. I'm a daytrader, but otherwise just an average user. I'd like to keep cost under $1,000. Love my current laptop, an Acer TravelMate (recommended by Bruce Thompson) with WinXP which is 12 yrs old now and I need more power for newer programs. Need a laptop with dual-core or more and at least 2.06GHz running Win10.
Any suggestions? Anyone? TIA
Newly
Thanks. I'll check it out.

I didn't know a "yes" could be lethal, LOL. I normally just don't answer any call from a number I don't recognize. I figure if it was legit they would leave a voicemail. They never do. . . Am I nuts, or have spam and phishing calls increased lately? I never used to get them. Now I get several every day. . .
Newly
Being a total paranoid, I taped over my computer's camera lens along with Alexa's and Cortana's mouths. Can't be too cautious these days, and I do value my privacy, LOL.
BTW, I misspoke when I posted "NTSC is the older analog cable TV signal". Actually NTSC is just the older analog signal cable or antenna, QAM is the digital cable signal.
Newly
Yes, there is a moment's silence after one answers, then the recording starts.
Newly
Yes, it is a big pain getting these calls all the time. I don't answer unknown phone number calls most of the time and since they never leave a msg, it is obvious they are phishing spam. Reporting them for unsolicited calling doesn't seem to help. . .
Newly
That's what I figured. I normally don't answer any calls from numbers I don't recognize but I was waiting for a call from an 800 number and assumed this was it. . .it wasn't, LOL!

I just received a telephone call supposedly from Apple (800-135-4624), a prerecorded message, advising me that there has been suspicious activity on my Apple account in the Cloud and not to access any financial information and requesting me to press 1 to speak to an Apple rep. I hung up! I do not have an Apple account, nor do I ever, EVER use the Cloud.
Has anyone else experienced something like this recently?

Hi, Zorax. Yes, my incoming cable carries both the TV and Inet signals, so I can work on the computer and also watch TV. I originally bought the Hauppauge TV dongle because I have a camper and wanted to get TV when travelling. Later when my old VCR died, I connected this Hauppauge dongle to my old WinXP computer so I could watch and record TV on that computer. When I got my Win10 computer I bought the newer Hauppauge dongle which can record two channels simultaneously or record one channel while watching another, which the older dongle could not do.
The over-the-air digital TV signal is the ATSC and requires an antenna. Clear QAM is digital cable TV, both standard and HiDef. NTSC is the older analog cable TV signal. I think which type of signal one can receive depends on the type dongle purchased. Both my Hauppauge dongles receive NTSC, ATSC and QAM signals, but I can actually receive more HD channels on the newer dongle than I could with my old VCR or my newer DVR or the older Hauppauge dongle.

I can understand how you feel, Karin, I also value my privacy. That said, it isn't necessary to stop using your Fitbit, just disconnect it from the app so it isn't sending info back to your phone and/or computer and Fitbit (soon to be Alphabet).
I actually have two Fitbits, one connected to their app and the other not. Either one will tell me the info I want, but I prefer to use the one that is not sending my info back to Big Brother, LOL

Oh, Plugger, I am so very sorry to hear about Lee's passing. He was always an internet friend to me, once gifting me a yearlong paid subscription he had won in some Ihub contest. I would have liked to have met him in person.
I don't post much anymore, but check up on old friends from time to time and just learned of this loss. We take for granted that the people we care about will always be there for us to enjoy, and are shocked when they no longer are. We must truly cherish those we care about every day because one day they may be missing beyond recall and it will be too late to tell them how much they meant to us.
Sleep well, Lee. You will be missed by many here, but I believe we will meet again some day. . .

I originally bought the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q back in 2008 and it still works great on the XP machine but can only record one show at a time.
A year or two ago I bought the Hauppauge WinTV-dual HD which allows me to record two different shows at the same time, or watch two shows at once, or record one show while watching another, and works on the Win10 machine. Read the requirements carefully because the picture will be jerky if your CPU can't handle recording from two tuners at once. My Win10 is a cheap little Lenovo and doesn't meet the CPU requirements according to Hauppauge, but the dongle still works perfectly even on that machine although I usually only record one show at a time so as not to overload the CPU.
https://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-WinTV-DualHD-Tuner-Windows-1595/dp/B015IL0FIW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=27NOTAQWYNHL1&keywords=hauppauge+tv+tuner&qid=1575250154&sprefix=hauppauge%2Caps%2C319&sr=8-3
I rarely go online with the XP these days, but when I do I am only visiting familiar sites I trust. I don't think I have any antivirus protection that still updates on that machine but I also don't have any critical files there (I changed all my programs to file directly to thumb drives so even if that machine is hacked they won't get much). I no longer use it to trade stocks. I used to have Avast but that stopped working years ago and I vaguely remember trying to find something that would still work on the XP without luck. Mainly I only use the XP to watch TV programs while I'm working on the Win10 machine.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Just FYI, if anyone is interested in watching TV on their computers, 11 years ago when I drove cross-country I bought a little Hauppage dongle for my XP machine. Ze'ev owned Hauppage stock and he was much smarter than I, so I bought a Hauppage. A couple of years ago my old VCR finally died, and I decided to hook the Hauppage dongle up to my old XP computer and TV cable. Works great with cable, getting HD as well as non-HD channels. Records perfectly. If you use it with the antenna supplied, reception is limited, but for the RV one can buy a better antenna.
For my Win10 machine I recently decided to upgrade to a newer Hauppage dongle that can record two TV shows at the same time, or watch one while recording a different channel. This little dongle is fantastic. Costs under $100. Highly recommended. Will never need to buy another TV, LOL.
My experience with HP has been very different to yours. I've had several HP printers (but they are older ones I use for my XP machine -- yes, I still prefer my XP to the Win10!). I always refill the printer cartridges myself which saves me a bundle. I consider the HP my workhorse printer.
On my Win10 machine I have a wonderful little Canon portable printer. This is my second one. The first one lasted 11 years and just died (I think it needs a new printhead) so I bought my second one ($162 at Amazon). I also fill the ink cartridges on this machine, but it is much easier to do than with HP.
There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Short-term traders or long-term investors both have the same goal, namely to make money. As a trader (as opposed to investor, though I also invest longer-term in some cases) I once, years ago, did a test when trading Apple stock -- at the end of a single test day I captured more gain trading both long and short than Apple stock made for the day. I consistently did that day after day with the same result.
The point is, whether one invests or trades is really simply a choice of method used to reach the same desired goal -- that of obtain profits in the stock market.
Hi, Meat. Re your signature, add use of irregardless instead of irrespective or regardless and orientated instead of oriented. English is such a beautiful language when used properly.
I think that might have been happening if one did not close all the holes one could find. I have checked my settings repeatedly after major Win10 updates (didn't worry about the minor ones) and have never found anything changed.
I wasn't happy about having to go to Win10 in the beginning, so I bought a very VERY cheap laptop to try it out and was actually very surprised to find that this little laptop does everything I need every bit as well as My $1000+ custom-built (by me) WinXP desktop. I've actually grown to like Win10 though I still have difficulty finding some of the more esoteric functions that are so intuitively accessible on WinXP. . .
BTW, if PMS Witch or anyone else has a recommendation for a small, cheap laptop with a CPU robust enough to run a Hauppauge DualHD USB TV Tuner without hiccupping or stalling when recording 2 channels simultaneously, I'd be pleased to know about it.
https://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-WinTV-DualHD-Tuner-Windows-1595/dp/B015IL0FIW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1542231397&sr=8-2&keywords=hauppauge+dual+usb+tuner
I've had a Hauppauge 950Q model for 10 years, bought it for my cross-country camping trip in '08 but rarely had time to use it. When my VCR finally died, I pulled it out and connected it to my old WinXP laptop and voila! I can watch TV or record a show to the harddrive. Worked great so decided rather than buy a new DVR for hundreds of dollars, I'd just buy the Dual Hauppauge for $65. Hoping it will work as well as the 950Q has all these years, but the old XP laptop I doubt has the computing power to record 2 shows at once without imploding, nor does my new Win10 laptop. May have to bring the desktop XP I built years ago out of retirement since it has a much better CPU and would probably work just fine, saving me the trouble of buying a new laptop just for recording purposes.
Newly
Yes, I think when MS was first introducing an upgrade to Win10 from earlier OS's they would use other peeps computers to update other peeps. I didn't upgrade, I simply bought a new computer with Win10 preinstalled, and immediately went through it and closed all the "holes" I was aware of (I'm sure there are more, LOL) to prevent things like that from happening. My Win10 cannot update itself without me being notified. I cut off Cortana. I don't allow anything to update automatically. Did a lot of other things in the beginning to tighten security as much as I could because I'd heard how intrusive Win10 can be. Check out BlackViper's recommendations for Win10. . .there are many others I checked out, too.

Well, it isn't exactly the same time each day, but within the same couple of hours. I have the router set to let me know if anyone else tries to log on but have never gotten any indication of that. Still, it is worrisome.
Newly
I'll check around and see what I can find. Tnx. I'm leaning towards thinking if is my trading platform's problem.
Could it be someone hacking into my router do you think?
Newly
Yes, I recently checked that because Win10 was running an automatic scan every day during working hours and I wanted to stop that. Nothing else showed.
Any other thoughts?

While we're chatting here, maybe you can give me some insight into a problem I've been experiencing the past week to 10 days.
Between 10-12 each day my internet connection drops then immediately reconnects within seconds. Does this multiple times within minutes of each other for 15-30 mins, then it stops. I never have the problem before 10 a.m. or after 12 p.m. Have tried physically exiting and reconnecting but that does nothing to stop it.
I use a router pass-word protected, etc., but wondering if this could be someone trying to break in.
Could, of course, be a glitch with my provider or their cable modem. Or, I suppose it could be a glitch in my trading platform, which is the only place I notice the disruption in service because that program notifies me with a message and sound whenever it disconnects/reconnects.
Any ideas on how I can track down the culprit??? TIA

Did you check the "Other Bookmarks" folder just below the 3 dots? I'm not sure if the browser created it but if you don't see it, likely I created it long ago and forgot, LOL.
Newly
Your imported bookmarks (if any) can be found by clicking on the 3 vertical dots at top right of screen (below the X to close Chrome). There you will also find lots of other stuff as well (like new tab, history, downloads, tools, etc). I keep 8-10 tabs open at one time without problems.
I used Firefox for years, but when I went to Win10 I shifted to Chrome and really like it. I organized my bookmarks into folders which appear at top of screen right below the address bar, very handy.
Hope this helps. . .

LOL. Just as I save all setup files I download, I also keep meticulous records of all changes I make on the computer so I can reverse them if necessary. For this instance I probably have 8 or 9 pages of notes, LOL.
Anyway, glad this is finally over. Been spending too much time on it for days now. Leaving on a camping trip soon and wanted to ensure the program would work when I'm not on my home wifi router, so had to persevere.

Well, after messing with the drivers and the registry and everything else (at one point I lost Bluetooth altogether!) I decided to try an uninstall/reinstall of the third-party software. These must be installed on both the computer and the phone.
When I deleted the active version on the computer I noticed I had kept the original setup file for an older version on my computer (I keep a download file of everything I download just for emergencies like this), so I thought I'd try reloading the older version that worked with my old phone. When that was done, I still had no Bluetooth connection but I could connect via USB -- this was a partial success.
I went to the gym to work out for an hour, still thinking through the problem of how to reestablish the Bluetooth connection. I couldn't download a legacy version of the third-party software for my phone from their site as it wasn't available, but it was available on my old phone.
Sooooooooooo, when I got home I installed Samsung's Smart Switch software on both phones and deleted the more recent version of the third-party software on my new phone and was able to bring over the older version from my old phone. So, I now had an older version of the software on both the computer and my new phone (the version that had worked well for me before I got the new phone and installed the newer software).
The moment of truth. Connected via USB on my phone then on my computer at which point the phone made some really strange clanking noises, but it did connect. OK. Disconnected and tried reconnecting via Bluetooth. Again nasty noises from the phone, but VOILA! it connected! Success at last (though I'm not at all sure what will happen when I shut both gadgets down for the night, LOL).
So, after all the messing about, it is now working perfectly again though I hope those horrible noises from my phone do not mean it is being damaged. I also trust in all my messing about in the systems and registry I haven't created any other problems. Time will tell!
I must admit that while I find these gadget problems a bit frustrating, I do enjoy a challenge, and I am dogged enough not to quit until I have achieved my ends! I also learn a lot in the process.
So, all's well that ends well and thank you for your input, elbiatcho, and hope all this info may help someone else with a similar problem.
Newly
OK, checked all the drivers and rolled back the Bluetooth driver. Nothing helped. Next I will delete the 3rd party software and reinstall both on the phone and on the computer.
What confuses me is that I can connect to the internet and surf just fine but cannot get the trading platform to recognize the connection from the phone either through Bluetooth or USB.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Newly
Tnx elbiatcho. I will look into that further.

Having a problem connecting via bluetooth (third-party software) on my Samsung phone and my Win10 computer. In the past this worked without a problem but when I got my new phone the problem started. I show "connected" and can surf the web but when I try to load my trading platform it says "No internet connection". I've tried everything I can think of and can't seem to fix this.
Anyone have any ideas? TIA
Newly
PS I can still connect via USB tether using my new phone and my old XP computer but not on the Win10 computer.
You can easily connect a monitor to your laptop via a docking station (that is the setup I use). My laptop also has only one USB connector, but a docking station will have several -- I have my printer, monitor (a TV), wireless keyboard, mouse and more plugged into the docking station, so I am using all the USB connectors there and then I purchased a USB 3.0 Hub (Trond makes one and they are quite cheap), which gives me 3 more.
I love the docking station as I unplug the connector from the laptop and the charger and easily reconnect the laptop when I return.
Good luck with your problem.

Thanks ES. I downloaded Panda and it is working fine. Have no idea what the problem was with the other antiviruses I tried, but I guess all is well that ends well and everything else appears to be working fine.
Thanks again.

Don't think it is that simple. Having the same problem hen I tried AVG -- it wouldn't run either. I believe the problem goes deeper, but i'll try Panda if it will run at all on an old XP.

Mornin all.
I'm having a problem with my old Acer WinXP machine. A few days ago Avast advised me to download an update to the program. I did so and now Avast will not run at all. System Restore does not work. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and Superantispyware in Safe Mode and they found nothing so I eliminated an infection as the cause of this problem.
I suspect a corrupt MS or User file. Any thoughts on how to check this?
I tried a clean install of Avast, and it shows in my program files but will not run. I tried starting it in services.msc (where it is listed as Automatic) but I then got the message that the IDSAgent would not start due to Error 1053 (a timeout error). One suggested fix was to go into the registry and increase the timeout time. When I did that my computer refused to upload windows at all so I went into Safe Mode again and reversed that and then windows loaded just fine.
As of right now, I have no antivirus software running at all, and that makes me uncomfortable. Any suggestions? TIA

Yes, it has been a while, MG. I don't post much any more, concentrate more on my trading, but still read a lot of threads here on Ihub, and try to offer info when I think it can help.
Hope my solution works for you. The tape has made my broken cell phone usable for about 6 months now, and hopefully will for at least 6 more!

Good, you? Haven't had any computer problems since I bought the cheap little Win10 laptop and hooked it up to a docking station and a TV. Still read the thread anyway as I can always learn from others' problems. Still think of Bruce Thompson often, too. He helped me a lot when I built my first computer.
