another note re: MEDQ
I'll have to go back and try to find the source, but I do recall the 70% majority shareholder (CBay, Inc.) may push for the company to pay a dividend.
hweb2 re: MEDQ
Yesterday a director filed a form 4. He purchased 15,998 shares between 4.35 and 4.95.
QEPC 3.2 reported .64 in eps for their 1st quarter.
No message
This may be nothing more than a short term rotation, but the NYSE Health Care Index is performing well today (up 1.93%).
My health care holdings are all up on the day.
MEDQ-4.55
Reported .18 in the most recent quarter. The company is benefiting from cost cutting measures and increaseing use of voice recognition software. If they can continue to improve margins, this one should continue to trend higher.
SPAN-11.35
Reported .71 in the first 6 months and expects the 2nd half of the year to be better than the first half of the year. 3.3% dividend yield is an added bonus.
TRIB-4.29
They reported .12 in their seasonally weak first quarter and are forecasting increasing earnings through 2009. Management of this company doesn't have the best track record, however, they have cut costs and will be benefiting from the launch of their Destiny Max analyzer. They are expecting FDA approval in the near future.
They also are in testing for another promising diabetes analyzer.
The Company does have a H1N1 test kit. I'm not sure how much this could contribute to revenues, but as the pandemic spreads, they will likely see a pickup in many of their diagnostic products.

If China continues a policy of pegging their currency to the US dollar, their will be no benefit from a currency perspective.
steeledge
The Chinese currency does not float freely. The Chinese government has attempted to maintain stability of their currency relative to the US dollar, so although in theory the argument is valid. It doesn't necessarily apply in this scenario.
Whether this policy will continue going forward is hard to predict.
hweb2 re: CKSW
I agree. I have sold way too early on a lot of stocks, but I'm not going to get greedy given the current macro environment.
Swick984 re: MEDQ
It is one of my largest holdings. I'm encouraged by their margin gains created by speech recognition technology. I will be watching closely to see if this trend continues into the future.
question re: BMRA
Is there a growth driver for this company? Yr/Yr growth is less than 3%, and 2008 was down 14% from 2007.
Operating earnings for the last quarter were nice, but if you look at operating earnings for calendar years 2007 and 2008, and using 7M shares as the denominator they earned roughly .07 from operations each year.
On a tax adjusted basis, that would translate to roughly .05 per share on an annual basis.
Absent a growth driver, I not sure that the current price is undervalued.
SPAN finally picking up some volume
With diluted earnings of .69 in the first half of the year and managements forecast that 2nd half earnings will improve over the first half, I'm surprised this stock is still trading in the $11 range.
The stock also has a 3%+ dividend yield, and is a good defensive play in this environment.
Outlook for Fiscal 2009
“We believe sales and earnings will improve in the second half of fiscal 2009 compared with the first half of the year, assuming no further significant declines in the economy,” commented Mr. Ferguson. “Our second half sales in the custom products segment will benefit from a new program with Sam’s Club. We originally expected the Sam’s business to start in March 2009, but it was briefly delayed at the customer’s request and has now begun in April. This new business should contribute positively to our performance in the third and fourth fiscal quarters this year.
“In the medical segment, we expect modest sales growth in our branded business throughout the remainder of the fiscal year, but that will be at least partially offset by lower private label sales. We also expect to benefit from sales of new products, like the Risk Manager, as well as additions to our support surface and positioner product lines that we plan to introduce later this year.
“Overall, we feel like the business performed well in a challenging market environment during the first half of fiscal 2009. Looking forward, we are confident about how the company is positioned for continued growth as the economy improves,” concluded Mr. Ferguson.

No financial details, but good news none the less.

nelson1234 re:IGLD
In adjusting the earnings for IGLD you need to account for the portion that is allocated to the minority interest and the net tax effect. I picked up a small position in the premarket.
INOC-Why did the merger agreement with GSIC fail?
hweb2 re:FONR
Apparently it was worth chasing.
hweb2 re:FONR
This one may run, but I decided not to chase it. The balance sheet is very weak, and this quarter benefited from several system sales which appear to be unpredictable.
In the 10q, they mentioned that the credit environment is making it more difficult for buyers to get credit. Absent big system sales, I suspect they will struggle to maintain profitability.
lentinman re:DDRX
Good points. The only problem is that my broker no longer has shares available to short. That was not the case as of yesterday.
lentinman re: DDRX
I agree with everything you said. One of the reasons I haven't jumped on a short as of today is GMCR. They reported .50 in eps and the stock has run to $80.
KIK re:DDRX
I've contemplated shorting this one, but I haven't yet. I sure wish I didn't sell in the mid $4 range.
nsomniyak re: SGZH
It may not make a difference, but the press release hasn't been published yet. It may get a bit more attention once that occurs.
KIK beat me to it on SGZH
SGZH-10q is out EPS .73 stock trading at 6.2
astc
The company reported outstanding results during market hours yesterday (.21 per diluted share). The stock is currently trading at 1.13.
I'm not sure about their future prospects, but pretty impressive results given the share price.
Re: ETC
Congrats to KIK and all those that jumped on this one.
A word of caution. There is significant potential dilution from convertible debt and preferred stock. They currently carry roughly 19m in convertible debt and preferred which is being rolled into a new Series E preferred with a conversion price of $2.
If converted that would increase the total number of shares outstanding by more than 100%. There are also warrants attached to the convertible debt which would add additional dilution.
The above doesn't include the 7.5m in additional credit facility from Lenfest which I'm unsure of whether that balance would also be convertible.
Thanks hweb2. I think the merger PR created the buying opportunity. The price of the merger shares was $5.88.
I was surprised it bounced back as quickly as it did. The merger complicates the forward earnings picture, but it still looks like it has excellent earnings potential going forward. It will take a couple of quarters to sort out the actual earnings picture going forward.
I decided to get out for now, and will watch for a pullback near the merger price to get back in.
houtheman re: ARTW
Who knows in this market. What hasn't run up?
CRTX
I don't know much about this stock, but I decided to pick up a small position under 6. They reported eps .48 v estimates of .2.
ABAT Interesting form 4
The CEO picked up 1 millions shares at 2.65 on 5/4.
CKSW
They reported .09 esp versus a .04 analyst estimate. The book to bill was very strong at $21m versus $13m. Not bad for what is traditionally their seasonally weakest quarter.
The company has $1.15 per share in cash and short term investments. I initiated a position under $4.
MikeDDKIng re: NADX
Year 1st Half 2nd Half
2004 .66 .28
2005 .79 .49
2006 .78 .22
2007 .85 .36
2008 .64 ??*
*Big impairment charge
Some of this is info is from a previous discussion of NADX back in 2007, and I've added numbers for 2007 and 2008. I didn't adjust for any special items.
MikeDDKing re: NADX
It is earnings that show a seasonal pattern. If you go back over the past several years. You will see a very consistent pattern of seasonality in earnings.
MikeDDKing re: NADX
Beware of the seasonality of earnings with NADX. I picked up a small position yesterday at 4.66, but the first two quarters will definitely be the strongest.
nelson1234 re:SDS
I picked up a small position in SDS today. I don't like investing in these double beta short etf's, but I feel it may be prudent given the magnitude and duration of this recent run in the markets.
re: ARTW
This is speculation, but it may be an ill advised response to the form 4s that were filed on 5/1 and 5/4. I say ill advised because they were option grants versus open market purchases.
hweb2 re: china stocks
JNGW is a small China stock that although up from its lows is still trading at a significantly depressed level relative to earnings.
Their business was impacted by the global downturn, but they reported .53 in earnings for 2008 and they currently trade at .73. They have over .30 per share in cash and they trade at about a third of book value.
abh3vt re: CBPO
It looks like Pinnacle China Fund was one of the sellers yesterday.
I just saw a form 4 come across the wire.

Can you negotiate commissions? One concern I've had regarding Etrade is their financial situation.
researcher59
Do you have a broker recommendation?
pattydady0
They've told me it won't show up in my account until someone at Ameritrade goes back through time and sales to determine if I was owed a fill, so I'm in no mans land.
Problem with Ameritrade
Along with others I was unable to place a trade for the open today, so I called a broker and he said that he could enter an order in their backup system.
It is now almost 2 hours after the open, and I have yet to receive any information regarding whether I received a fill on the order. When I made an inquiry, I was told that Ameritrade doesn't actually submit those orders to the market, but they go back manually and determine if I was due a fill.
The stock traded significant volume below my limit price after the open, yet one broker was stating that the ask only came down to my price for a brief second with limited quantity, so it appears unclear whether I'm entitled to a fill.
My guess is that Ameritrade is withholding a response because they know I'm owed a fill, but since the stock is well above my limit price they are hoping it will fall back so they can buy the shares without incurring a loss.
If it doesn't come back I'm guessing they will claim I wasn't due a fill. The problem for me is I would like to trade these shares for a gain, but I have no idea whether I own them or not.
