Intel Introduces Ultra-Small Solid-State Drive for Handheld Devices;
The Intel Z-P140 PATA Solid-State Drive is Ultra-Small, Fast and Low-Power for Mobile Internet Devices, Digital Entertainment and Embedded Applications
(M2 PressWIRE Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)
RDATE:17122007
SANTA CLARA, Calif -- Intel Corporation announced its latest entry into
the solid-state drive market with the Intel Z-P140 PATA Solid-State
Drive (SSD), one of the tiniest in the industry aimed at handheld
mobile devices. Smaller than a penny and weighing less than a drop of
water, these 2 Gigabyte (GB) and 4GB ultra-small devices are fast,
low-power and rugged, with the right size, capacity and performance for
mobile Internet devices, digital entertainment and embedded products.
SSDs use flash memory to store operating systems and computing data,
emulating hard drives. The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD has an industry
standard parallel-ATA (PATA) interface and is optimized to enhance
Intel-based computers, and will be an optional part of Intel's Menlow
platform for mobile Internet devices debuting in 2008.
The Intel Z-P140 is the smallest SSD in its class, making it attractive
to designers and manufacturers of mobile and ultra-mobile devices.
Comparatively, the Intel Z-P140 is 400 times smaller in volume than a
1.8-inch hard disk drive (HDD), and at .6 grams is 75 times lighter. It
is also a much more durable alternative to HDDs.
The 2GB and 4GB capacities are large enough to store mobile operating
systems, applications and data such as music or photos. It is
extendable to 16GB for added storage capacity.
"Our mission is to provide world-class non-volatile SSD and caching
solutions that are designed, optimized and validated to enhance Intel
Architecture-based computing platforms," said Pete Hazen, director of
marketing for Intel's NAND Products Group. "Our customers are finding
the Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD to be the right size, fit and performance for
their pocketable designs. This is Intel's latest offering as we
continue to expand our product line of reliable, feature-rich and
high-performing SSDs."
The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD offers read speeds of 40 Megabytes-per-second
(MB/s) and write speeds of 30 MB/s. Critical to mobile applications,
its active power usage is 300mW (milliwatts), and only 1.1mW in sleep
mode, which helps to extend a device's battery life.
With a 2.5 million hours mean-time between failures (MTBF) rate, this
PATA-based chip scale package delivers reliable solid-state performance
in an extremely tiny footprint. The Intel Z-P140 is currently sampling
with mass production scheduled in the first quarter of 2008. The 4GB
version will follow the 2GB product.
The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD adds to the current Intel Z-U130 USB
Solid-State Drive family introduced last March. The Intel Z-U130 USB
Solid-State Drive has a universal serial bus (USB) standard interface
and is used as a faster storage alternative for a variety of
Intel-based computing platforms such as servers, emerging market
notebooks and low-cost PCs as well as embedded solutions.
The company has also demonstrated technology for future
high-performance SSDs with a serial ATA (SATA) interface that will
round out the full family of Intel SSD offerings. That technology is
expected to be announced as a product line in 2008.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer
of computer, networking and communications products. Additional
information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.

re: despite the censure from the incompetent voices
You know nothing about the background and bona fides of those to which you refer. No more than we know whether you are really Chinese. No more than we know whether you are indeed a telecom guru or an insider.
I'll tell you this, Mr. Chan (if that really is your name). I have spent over 25 years in senior management and major program management roles at one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers. I'll tell you something else: There is absolutely no evidence corroborating your glowing prognosis for RSMI. In fact, the evidence flies in the face of your claims.
Now, to save you some time, I know you will feel free to publicly discount my claims to experience. That is your perogative. Just as it is my perogative to discount those claims made by you.
But I have history and share price on my side. You have nothing but uncorroborated claims.

Windows XP SP3 provides a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP. For customers with existing Windows XP installations, Windows XP SP3 fills gaps in the updates they might have missed—for example, by declining individual updates when using Windows Update.
Windows Vista provides the most advanced security and management capability, but for PCs that cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista right now, Windows XP SP3 ensures these PCs have all available updates and allows these PCs to leverage some new Windows Server 2008 capabilities, such as Network Access Protection (NAP).
Janice, take it easy with the dragon. He's WAY out of his league, as you say.
As an aside, why would someone (who seems to know who you are) troll you like this? It's like ASKING to have your head handed to you (shaking my head)!
Let me know how it works out!
Oh yeah: You said you had you chimney swept before you started using it this year. Good on you!! Do this every year. Have a chimney sweep clean the chimney and stove every year before heatiing season starts.
Burning a hot fire will keep your flue fairly clean during the heating season.
Being paranoid about creosote build-up is a good thing. Chimney fires burn down houses!
You can't beat a good wood fire on a cold day. I am burning two stoves as I type this!
It sounds like you may have a good bit of build-up on the glass from the prior owner, from what you have said. Here's the approach:
1: Build a really hot fire next time you use the stove. This will burn off a good bit of the build-up.
2: Don't do this step until the stove is cold! First, use a paper towel moistened with water. Wipe the glass thoroughly (will take some elbow grease and a few new paper towels, as they get pretty dirty).
3: If you are satisfied at this point, you are done. If not, repeat step 2 but use household ammonia slightly diluted with water (you can mix the ammonia and water in a spray bottle and spray it on the paper towels).
I wouldn't do any more than this. From this point, clean the glass (cold stove) regularly, using step 2 or 3. DO NOT use any kind of abraisive cleaner like Comet or Bartenders Friend. Don't scrape the glass with a razor blade. This will score the glass and if scored glass gets dirty, it will never come clean. If there is a bit of grey/black left after you have cleaned the glass, don't sweat it. The stove is old enough that this is fairly normal. I think continued cleaning will help.
Hope this helps.
beigledog,
Back in the late 70's, during the last oil price scare, I worked as marketing director for a wood stove company. It was an education in itself!
The knobs below the door handles are your damper knobs. Closing then does not make the fire burn hotter. It does exactly the opposite.
You need to be aware that fireplace inserts (and fireplace chimney flues) can really build up creosote unless you allow the fire to burn hot (keep the dampers open all the way, all the time. Control the heat output by modulating the amount of firewood you burn at one time in the stove. Too hot? Hold off on more fuel until the temp comes down a bit (you'll still have a nice bed of hot coals when you do add more wood).
AND ... you'll avoid chimney fires from burning creosote. Burning the stove hot helps consume the stuff that otherwise would deposit in yiour flue as creosote in a process called secondary combustion. If you don't keep the dampers open and burn hot, secondary combustion doesn't occur.
Are your fireplace glasses sooting up? If they are, you are burning your unit too cool.
re: By owning the yield and the work in process, they shoulder all of the risk and growth capital.
Yup, that's what Rim says. Here's what I say:
I have worked with TSMC (among other foundries) over the span of 25 years (as a customer). Based on this experience, I can unequivocally say that anyone who swallows this load of guano is self-delusional. I don't need to call anyone.
re: Smells like bat feces to me!
Yup. Guano be another year like the past years: "Deception since Inception!"
re: eSilicon is paying for this upfront
Ask anyone with experience at semiconductor foundries and design units. They will tell you that this is highly dubious, to say the least.
Thats cool.
re: you (wbmw) are at times simply not generous enough in spirit to AMD.
1. There's not much to be "generous" about when referencing AMD the firm or the equity right now. Are you asking wbmw to suspend reality?
2. We all bring our own biases to any board on a message forum. If we had no biases, we would be very short on opinions.
3. If your statement was meant in some way to sway wbmw to be more "charitible" to AMD, perhaps you would be more effective in offering items regarding AMD that deserve said "charity". For me, Hector and crew have horribly screwed AMD (the firm) up. These screw-ups are now reflected in the share price. Further screw-ups will result in further reduction of the share price. As an investor, I do not trade in charity. Only reality. I'll save my altruism for activities outside the market.
EP,
Just paste the phone number in Google. You will see the first page of results is full of AMD PR's giving this number to call for AMD.
excel,
I'm Stoked, I tell you!
Since I wrote that post, I've thought some more. RSMI will need to acquire both AMD and Intel. They're going to need that capacity. For sure. I'm sure our good buddy GrooveMaster thinks so, too.
Sorry, yet another question, Dr. Chan,
When do you think RSMI will be able to buy out Alcatel. Will AT&T be next, or will they go for a Japanese telco like Japan Telecom Co.?
I'm also thinking, as RSMI gets so HUGE, they will want to vertically integrate and move from buying their semiconductors outside to fabbing them internally. Since Intel Corp. is the world's largest semiconductor producer, they would be the perfect fit. I'm thinking RSMI will want to acquire Intel. Listen, I am on a first name basis with Dr. Andy Grove over at that semi outfit. I'll bet he would be enthused to hear about an RSMI hostile bid.
On second thought, AMD is on the ropes and could be had for a small fraction of what it would cost to acquire Intel. Dr. Hector Ruiz is the fellow to call with a proposal. I'm sure he would be very excited to hear from a fellow PhD and purveyor of semiconductors.
I'm sure RSMI has the cash and credit lines to get a lot of this started. Especially once their equity price starts following the Qualcomm historic curve.
Will you be on the board by then? You are such a detailed and able strategic thinker, I think you should be. For sure. I bet our good buddy GrooveMaster thinks so, too.
re: You are about as Chinese as I am.
He may not be Chinese, but he sure does have some Promoter in him:

In the United States of America, we remember the images coming out of Tiananmen Square in 1989. I'll pass on being part of that "whole", thank you very much.

One stock or five: If they are Pink and you try to be a "long", you will likely lose your money in the long haul. It's like the 11th Commandment.
But do as you like. It's your money.
re: ill keep the faith unless proven otherwise
OK, gail. I actually thought I could talk some sense into you (about staying away from Pinkies). I see I was wrong. Guess I had a soft spot in my heart, as I was born & raised in Virginia.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

gail has repeatedly admitted that she doesn't understand. I believe she has been truthful.
It's a shame, really. People like Bae count on folks like gail. gail would be far better off putting whatever investment funds she has in a CD, money market, savings acct., mutual fund, or finding someone who does understand to guide her investments. (And I'm not talking about some message board poster who whispers in her ear, either.)
Stinky Pinkies is the last place folks like gail should be.
re: but they must oversea those people
Yes, because the entire outfit is "at sea", imo.

re: Oh, yeah, I've paid my mortgage late about the last 20 months.
Well, that's surely not going to help you raise your FICO (credit) score.
re: proctologist
Well, he may be able to provide a useful service after all. He can try to repair the damage done by Rim to the shareholders.
menos seems to have a hard time watching Intel eat their young.
But it's nothing new. Same as it ever was. 'Twas ever thus.
re: Perhaps you should join AMD's PR department, you do it so well.
Haven't you heard? As part of AMD's "lite" strategy, they are dissolving their PR dept. and moving those responsibilities to their legal dept. I'm pretty sure menos doesn't have a JD.
Do you suppose you could take this "stuff" here?

re: Vincent Black Shadow is the best motorcycle
Just for you:
Vincent Black Lightning
Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Knoxville they did ride
Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride
I've never tasted the beer, so could not hazard a guess. You can narrow down the yeast type by examining the beer type. Is it an ale, lager, wheat beer (hefewisen), etc.
Micro breweries have access to more and varied sources than the home brewer. Like I said before, my comments were directed to the brewing process, not any brewer specifically. I had not heard of this brewery before seeing the posts here, so I have no comment on the firm or it's products.
re: brew Quaker Oats once with Fleishmann's dry yeast and I got sick as a dog.
Dear Lord! What did you expect?
re: When they say "retooling" it means they are sterilizing the vats for the next batch for the next round of fermentation which then takes weeks.
No, it takes "days", at the most to prepare for the next batch of wort. It does take weeks to complete the fermentation process. I have been an active homebrewer since the mid-80's. I don't know this firm (and have no opinion on it's prospects), but I do know the brewing process.
