I'm gone. Like a steam locomotive rolling down the track, I'm gone, gone, and nothing's going to bring me back. I'm gone. 06/29/2023

Wow! I had no idea you would have to edit the registry to fix it!
Still doing this but a LOT more frequently now (I suppose the offending ad has been upped in rotation):

Good answer, Sir!
OK, here's what i would do. I know my flash card reader didn't require installation software, Windows just installed it when it was detected. If your's had install software, uninstall it and unplug it from the USB port. If not, just unplug it from the USB port.
Then restart your computer. Once fully booted, plug the reader back in the USB port and reinstall the software (if required ... I bet Windows will recognize it and simply install it).
See if this works.
re: Where is Ken Chan, Phd?
Taking extension classes at Afghanistan Tech?
On the AutoPlay tab, near the bottom, there is a "box" (actually a circle) to check saying "Prompt me each time to choose an action". Is this checked?
To change how your computer handles multimedia content:
Open My Computer
Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want, such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties
On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to change
Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it detects the media type you selected
To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
Your removable storage device must be attached to your computer for it to appear in the My Computer folder.
GrooveMaster (and some other posters) have a bunch of crap embedded in their signatures. Go to "Tools" (in the bar at the top of the page) and change your settings to turn off signatures, embedded graphics, and embedded sounds). You will also find their posts will load much more quickly.
Techno,
PLEASE share what your accountant says. Hey, I have a solution for you. Quit your tech job and get into real estate. I guarantee, you will qualify! LOL
I was not aware of that, but I'm sure my high priced accountant is. Since I'm a REALTOR now (you can imagine my annual income given the current market condition), this is very welcome news.
I exercised those options back in 1998. You probably know INTC share price back then. I exercised and held, meaning those AMT taxes were not offset by gains from selling the options. Out of pocket. It will be nice to get some it back in my pocket!
Boy Howdy! Did they ever! I wrote a check for over $100K to Unc Sam that year.
I think if the FED cut rates between meetings that it would make the market VERY nervous. I don't see the cut until the end of month meeting. Some are saying 100 basis points, but I discount that.
re: How difficult will it be to upgrade to a 64 bit version of windows?
From what I have learned, the biggest problem is driver availability, especially with older hardware. Further, you cannot "upgrade" from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version. It would have to be a clean install, not an upgrade install.
A lot of the AMD die-hard fans upgraded to 64-bit XP and had nightmares with driver support. So much so that some reverted back to the 32-bit version or had to buy new peripherals.
My take is that unless you can clearly justify the need for 64-bit OS based on your application useage, it's just not worth the additional hassle right now.
OK. Thanks.
cannabis,
Are you buying INTC prior to earnings release?
re: I still find filing taxes to be a pain in the neck
So do I. Especially after getting hit BIG time with AMT on options when I retired (still "working" this off after 10 years!) That's why I pay a large CPA firm a grand a year to do my taxes for me. That and to have a heavy-hitter in my corner if I should ever need them with the IRS.
Not sure. My first take was that the corporation wasn't affected by insider rules vis a vis repurchases. I proved myself wrong on that! At this point, I'm not sure.
Oops! I'll correct myself:
SEC Rules
The company itself is covered by the SEC rules that prohibit insider trading in a public corporation’s stock. A corporation may not repurchase its own stock before any material inside information is reported to the public; a company should announce the decision to buy back stock before commencing actual purchases.
The SEC’s complex section 240.10b-18, referred to as Rule 10b-18, is generally regarded as the safe harbor for stock buybacks, although it does not provide absolute protection from litigation. Highlights of Rule 10b-18, which also provides various exceptions and traps, include the following:

I think the insider trading rules apply to certain individuals within the company, not the company as an entity itself. I could be wrong, and would expect to be corrected if so.
Lycus,
I know Will Swope. I know Intel very well. I know what RSMI was and is up to. Something doesn't add up here. Sounds very hinky to me.
I will wait to see what happens, as this simply doesn't pass the smell test.
When you encounter contradictions, go back and reevaluate your assumptions.
No probs, basser. I thought it wise to include instructions.

test
Well, we will have to see whether that "plethora" of support really exists. Along with the design.
One thing I will tell you. Everything that has come from the company and it's sycophants regarding fabrication of devices at TSMC is detached from reality. That I do know for sure. If that's so, why couldn't everything else be similarly detached from reality?
Oh yeah. I'll be here and we'll all know in the fullness of time. Unless the company reinvents itself again and starts touting it has invented the best condom known to man.
re: Who says?
I believe you are responding to the person who said it, aren't you?
re: Telcordia says it works. So does TSMC.
I hate to break it to you, but TSMC wouldn't know if it "worked" or not. Nor would they care. All they would care about is ensuring the finished die meet test parameters set forth in the design. IF the design ever existed in the first place. Which it doesn't.
Your knowledge of semiconductor fabrication is about as poor as "Dr." Chen's. Or was that Chan? Doesn't matter, it's someone else, anyway.
excel,
re: Put RSMI in box and plug in public message.
Bill is pumping it on his board. He has thousands of sheep.
Those sheep have taken it to the other top hub pump boards.
Some of those sheep have boards of their own that aren't as big as Bills but still have followers.
That is something that really bothers me about this site.
re: what are we to make of this?
Well, I sure can't make sense of it. Am I to understand that the B of A analyst, Sumit Dhanda, downgraded INTC saying "it is unlikely to serve as a sufficient offset to weak seasonality in the first half of 2008.
Bottom line, the stock moves on expectations for gross margin and EPS upside. Barring a scenario which results in upside in PC demand, he thinks the fourth quarter will mark the last quarter of meaningful upward revisions suggesting limited upside to stock."
Then the (I suppose) same analyst says this 3-4 days later:
"Banc of America Securities said it raised its earnings estimates on chipmaker Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to 27 cents a share from 26 cents for the fourth quarter and to $1.27 a share from $1.25 for 2007.
The brokerage said its industry and channel checks suggest that Intel benefited from a strong uptake of Core 2 Duo mobile processors and the momentum in servers, driven in part by market-share gains versus Advanced Micro Devices Inc."
What the heck does he think is supposed to happen? Just makes no sense at all!
re: The resident virus expert for the thread.
That's very good to know!
Meatloaf,
iHub is serving an ad (I can't tell which one) where the post page will start to load, then the browser window quickly goes to:
http://www.google.com/hws/dell-usuk/afe?hl=en&channel=us&s=http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/cobrands.ihub.dart;sz=300x250;ord=<?%20echo%20$ord%20?>?
I can then click "back" to get back to the post.
Thought you would want to know.
wccawa,
I originally recommended this fellow talk to Bruce about this infection. I have probably spent 2 hours scouring the net looking for any information on worms, etc. exhibiting his symptoms (red font, double underline, popups on mouseover) and could find absolutely nothing.
Has me scratching my head.
re: electricity to run the blower and auger for the pellets
That demand is very small, though.
Been to the AF museum in Ohio, but I was talking about Dayton, VA.
Dayton is a very pretty area. Mennonite country.
Thank you for the pointer.
It's been over 30 years, but didn't (doesn't?) he run a fairly large roofing biz out of Dayton?
Zeev, if you don't mind, what is your take on the macro market the last few days?
Yup, the Riteway Model 37 burned wood or coal. Downdraft with cast iron grates (for coal burning).
At the time, I lived in a 1930's vintage frame house with virtually no insulation. I set up the Riteway downstairs in the living room ... it was a reality/lab situation where we would try out new ideas after they cleared the lab, before they went into production. There were winter nights when we had to open windows, it got so hot in the house.
I remember Nashua well. A major competitor and a very good stove.
When I installed 2 stoves in my current house (around 1998), I was surprised at the few choices remaining for really efficient stoves. Ended up buying Canadian stoves (Regency). But I still can't achieve the levels of secondary combustion I could in that old ugly Riteway.
This is a good reference site for the woodburner:
http://www.hearth.com/
Here's one of the stoves my old firm manufactured. Not much to look at, but really heated like a champ!
Riteway Manufacturing Co., of Harrisonburg, Va. made wood stoves throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. The designs were utilitarian, and used a downdraft method of combustion. Some models were outfitted as furnaces and boilers. Later models (1982 on) attempted to use catalytic converters, however soon after Riteway because a causualty of cheap energy prices in the mid-1980’s.

re: and the installer told me to NOT insulate the liner, which i think was a big mistake
Sure was. I don't think I would continue to rely on this person. Do you have any good chimney sweeps in your area?
Here's a fairly good article on chimney construction. You may find that once you achieve a good draft, many of your problems may go away. I burn 2 stoves using premanufactured insulated metal chimneys. You can hear the draft when they get up to temperature.
http://newsletter.lehmans.com/articles/chimney_health_09222000.html
Construction of Chimney -- A round chimney flue drafts better than a square or rectangular one. In addition, an insulated chimney (either a metal one or properly constructed masonry chimney) will get warm and stay warm easier, making it easier for the chimney to draft properly.
