Stock, metals sell offs hurt hedge funds

Hedge funds took it on the chin during the recent market correction at the end of May, owing to sharp declines in metal prices and declines in the broader stock markets, according to analysts.

After two consecutive weeks of strength in the beginning of May hedge funds fell sharply in the third week. The Merrill Lynch Diversified Hedge Fund Index ultimately posted a 0.94 percent loss, according to an analyst note from Merrill Lynch. The hardest-hit strategies were equity long/short funds, global macro and managed futures funds.

Hedge funds are private, lightly regulated investment pools for wealthy individuals or institutional investors. The funds use a wide variety of strategies, from betting on or against stocks, currencies or commodities to more esoteric strategies involving "derivative" investments or turning around distressed companies. But they generally won't welcome individuals as investors unless they have a net worth of at least $1 million.

Managed futures funds, which trade commodity futures contracts, fell the hardest last week, declining 3.22 percent in the week ending May 22, according to Merrill Lynch's hedge fund index, owing in part to a sharp drop in precious metals prices following a sell off. Managed futures funds lost 2.12 percent for the first three weeks of May.

U.S. equity long/short funds, which hold long positions in stocks and hedge those positions by shorting stocks, ETFs or related instruments, fell 2.68 percent during the same week, thanks to a broad market sell off. The strategy fell 3.54 percent during the first three weeks of May.

But the Merrill Lynch analysts also blame new Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke - not because of his policies, but because the first year for any new Fed chairman means higher volatility and lower equity returns for the S&P 500, according to the analysts.

Global macro funds, which invest in currencies and other instruments in foreign markets, fell 2.76 during the week ending May 22 and are down 2.7 percent for the first three weeks of the month. All but two of the hedge fund strategies Merrill Lynch tracks were in negative territory for the first three weeks of May.

These early summer doldrums fall on the heels of a strong first quarter for hedge funds, which posted their best first quarter in three years at the start of 2006 and pulled in $24 billion in new assets as wealthy investors sought alternatives to the stock and bond markets, new research shows.

The first-quarter flows bring the total amount of assets invested in hedge funds worldwide up to about $1.2 trillion, according to Chicago-based hedge fund tracker Hedge Fund Research.

theaveragetrader, did you ever announce the new gold and copper pick?

A stock that is involved in Silver with the gov. of Columbia, also with a contract to turn Natgas into liquid natgas, is FMNJ. I rode it up from .0018 up to .115, but missed the top at about .145. I recently started buying again at .035.

Also, not a penny, but a stock whose chart I love is AUA.V in Canada. It has a great MOLY property and is going through the final stages of permitting. If you look at the very long-term chart on Bigcharts, it is in a "fractal portion" of the CWPC chart, IMO. I will post charts, below, but they are from about 10 days, ago. Since then, AUA has dropped into what I think is a very LT bottom. I bought heavily on that drop to add to shares I bought at around .45. I think AUA could trade up to about $6 over 6 months...and to about 9 over 12 months.

My fav is still the AMEP chart until Gold and Silver bottom. I think Gold may bottom around 575, but could drop lower. Whateve the bottom is going to be, I feel quite comfortable that this is a fleeting drop in a LT PM bull market.

MGM Mineral Resources Signs Letter of Intent to Acquire the "Manantiales" Property in the Province of Antioquia, Colombia
MGM Mineral Resources Inc. (OTC: MGMX), a precious metal mining company focused on the development of producing properties internationally, announces that preliminary discussions have enabled them to sign a Letter of Intent in the acquisition of the Manantiales property.

This property is located at the northern end of Colombia's central Cordillera, just two kilometers from the other MGM property, La Esperanza. Just like La Esperanza, this future promising land is contained within a gold producing belt, which stretches for over 150 kilometers from Sanata Isabel in the south through Remedios and Segovia to Zaragoza, l Barge, and Caucasia in the north. The region remains and always has been a major contributor to the national production of gold and silver. The area is currently seeing an influx of activity and interest from mining companies around the world, which made it very difficult to lock up the Letter of Intent, due to the overwhelming demand from North American and European gold companies.

"We are very pleased with how our negotiations are proceeding," stated Kenneth Lamb, President of MGM Mineral Resources. "Our due diligence has been moving forward at a rapid pace and we expect to have a definitive agreement in place very soon. If our estimates are correct, this operation will deliver considerable value to our holdings."

The Manantiales mine consists of an area measuring 24 hectares and 4645 square metres. In preliminary studies by our new Lead Geologist, this mine is smaller in both size and probable reserves than our La Esperanza project, but, recent studies indicate that the gold is of higher grade.

"If all goes as expected with the Manatiales project, it will join hands with La Esperanza mine to become the cornerstone of MGM's precious metals holdings," concluded Mr. Lamb.

The company expects to sign the acquisition agreement by end of May 2006, if not sooner.

Heavy in UNCN, adding MGMX, and starting to accumulate GWGO (GWGOE). All of these tiny Gold or Gold/ Copper stocks are going run much higher based on the charts, IMO. I just rode FMNJ from .018 to .11. UNCN is already running as MGMX is just bottoming. I think GWGO(E) will make a heck of a run very soon. My favorite penny stock is really AMEP which I have been in since .01. I think AMEP bottomed for the intermediate-term over the last 2 days.

I also love the charts of HISC and PBLS in the "penny arena." The chart of HISC showing the price potential of the chart over the next couple of years will be posted, below. By all means, due your own due diligence before investing.

Based on a maxed out share structure of 800 million shares, which isn't the case the pps is valued at $.625 before you add in any other properties and revenues, and costs of removing the Gold.

Now, more importantly keep in mind that the company has 220 million shares restricted. If they wanted to they can use the remaining 400 million shares to add more Gold Acquisitions in Columbia, which would make the pps valuation even higher. Or if they wanted to they could retire some of there Authorized shares, which also would increase shareholder value. So as you can see the stock has no where to go but up from here.

American Energy Production Inc. Announces ``It Rained'

MINERAL WELLS, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2006--American Energy Production Inc. (OTCBB:AMEP - News) announced today a major rainfall on wholly owned Bend Arch Petroleum Inc. Palo Pinto 12 well leases in Palo Pinto County, Texas.

Charles Bitters, President of American Energy Production Inc., stated, "This may be one of the most important news releases AMEP has made in the past year for Bend Arch Petroleum Inc. The area around North Texas, especially Palo Pinto County hasn't had measurable rainfall for over one year resulting in a shortage of fresh water to fracture stimulate the Barnett Shale and Marble Falls formations currently in production. With over 3.5 inches of rain the creeks close to the property are running and the stock tanks are almost full. Having this volume of fresh water available Bend Arch can immediately make plans to get on the service companies list to begin frac operations."

The first well Bend Arch plans to fracture stimulate is the Hart #2 Marble Falls oil and natural gas producer. This well was originally fracture stimulated with a small 2600 barrel slick water frac in early 2005 and immediately produced 1000 barrels of oil in the first week of production. A unidrolics jet pump assembly was installed on the Bend Arch Petroleum Hart #8 well on May 1st and as soon as storage tanks are delivered the gas well will be put into production. The unidrolics pump will help remove the fracture fluid still to be recovered from the well faster than a conventional pumping unit.

Bend Arch Petroleum's Phantom Rig I has commenced drilling on the Murphy #3 and 8 5/8" surface pipe has been cemented in place. The Company is very excited about this prospect well because of the seismic data retrieved from the extensive seismic shoot done in 2005 by Bend Arch Petroleum Inc.

In the case of AMEP each investee's oil and gas leases and producing properties and equipment will be evaluated by a petroleum engineer and then the independent members of the Board of Directors of AMEP will use this information along with other relevant facts and arrive at a value of each investee and the complete BDC.
