Look, I know what you are thinking. “On the one hand, this chicken is making a lot of sense. On the other hand, I’m reading a blog written by a chicken on Substack. How seriously can I take this stuff?”

I’ll leave you with this. If Bloomberg is flippantly dropping criminalization quotes in above-the-fold news articles detailing a sea change in how people with the real power in our society are viewing the fossil fuel industry, it’s best you sit up, pay attention, and prepare accordingly.

(Kitco News) -Nikola Tesla, is the first and last name that has now became two faces of the electric-vehicle market with Nikola Motor riffing off the iconic Tesla brand. Nikola Motor is the first company to announce an all-electric “class 8” heavy duty truck, an apparent extrapolation of Tesla’s battery-electric sedans.

Much like Tesla’s 400,000+ preorders for their upcoming “Model 3”, Nikola reportedly received over 8,000 reservations for its new truck, 3 billion dollars in value if all orders are confirmed. But this is where their paths split.

While Tesla is entirely focused on plug-in battery electric technology, Nikola just announced it would add a range-extending hydrogen fuel cell replacing the previously intended compressed natural gas (CNG) unit. We spoke with Trevor Milton, CEO of Nikola Motors, to learn why.

“Fuel cells are very efficient compared to the [electrical] grid, which isn’t”, Milton explained. “That’s why we took the plug off. We didn’t want people to have to use ‘dirty’ energy to power our trucks”.
Elon Musk and his team have frequently trash-talked hydrogen in the past, claiming that it belonged in space ships but not in cars. How does Milton feel about that? “On a light duty car it’s a little harder to make hydrogen work because of cost. So I get where Elon is coming from. But on a heavy duty truck, hydrogen is absolutely the way to go. Battery-only will never work on a heavy duty truck because it can’t go the distance – you’d end up with a very limited range”.

It should be noted that the “Nikola One” truck will still carry a 320kWh battery. To put this into perspective: a Tesla Model S is equipped with 75-100 kWh batteries. However, the truck’s battery is charged by the fuel cell which helps boost the vehicle’s range to up to 1,200 miles, requiring just 15 minutes of refill time.

It is Nikola’s goal to be completely emission free, including the production of hydrogen. To accomplish this, the company is presently commissioning and building a series of solar farms across the country that will convert water to hydrogen by means of electrolysis. Launch date for the entire system including production trucks and 56 fueling stations is 2019.

Alas, Milton would not answer the all-important question of how much platinum his fuel cells will employ. The release of all technical information is reserved for the official unveiling of the truck on December 1st, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Milton did, however, give us some clues: “Existing designs like Toyota’s or Ballard’s weren’t quite adequate for our application as the membranes we require have to be thicker. We had to re-design the fuel cell to fit a much tougher environment. Our life cycle is 1 million miles whereas a Toyota’s or Honda’s is about 250,000 miles”.

This leaves us hopeful for platinum as a key element in tomorrow’s freight industry.

A factor that has supported oil prices for much of this year has been the persistent “contango”, which means that prices for future delivery of oil are significantly ahead of spot prices, probably caused by the market’s erroneous expectation that the shutting down of capacity will lead to a shortage and thus higher prices. This belief, coupled with high production, has led to an armada of ships bulging with Crude, sitting offshore, with the owners holding the mistaken belief that they will get higher prices later. Thus, the dramatic development of the past few weeks, during which the contango has collapsed, so that it has already become uneconomic to store oil offshore, means that the screw is now being turned on owners storing oil offshore. With the market glutted, and contangos collapsing, owners are being forced into the bizarre position of resorting to debt-funded storage, a highly anomalous solution that is clearly untenable over the longer-term. What this means is that a large number of bulging ships are soon going to race to shore to disgorge their cargoes for what they can get, a development that could magnify the downturn in oil that we are expecting into a rout of plunging prices, made worse by the fact that prices have been artificially elevated by excess storage in expectation of rising prices, which has so far been a self-fulfilling prophecy – but when all storage capacity, onshore and offshore, has been used up, that’s it, it’s game over, and that appears to be the situation that we have arrived at.

Finally, courtesy of Haynes and Boone, here is a less impartial perspective thanks to a poll of banks, PE firms, and oil service companies who were asked to share their thoughts on the upcoming spring redetermination. Among the key findings:

- Overall respondents expect 79% of the borrowers to see a decrease in their borrowing base in spring 2016
- Overall respondents, on average, expect to see borrowing bases to decrease by 38% compared to what they were in fall 2015
- As to the most likely path to be taken by lenders and borrowers who face a borrowing base deficiency this spring: 36% of respondents said the would negotiate an amendment or extension with the lender; 31% said they would sell non-core assets; 15% said they would seek capital from a hedge fund or private equity fund; 4% said sell the company; 13% said restructure or declare bankruptcy
