What is the Connectivity Challenge?
Traditional security and identity management systems require an access mechanism to present a user’s credentials, such as a user name and password, access card, OTP (one-time password) device or an embedded device key.
These authentication methods present some challenges because credentials are purpose-specific, meaning that one individual is associated with multiple forms and instances of credentials. Sometimes these credentials are assigned by location or device and therefore have limited portability and distribution options. Credentials are also not universal, requiring multiple designs and implementation of security models which are costly to administer and manage. The result is often a “weak” security solution.

Identity and Entitlement Management for Government and Military
In today’s global operations and tactical landscape, identity and security must be absolute. Conventional weapons’ systems are ineffective in providing adequate defenses as the battlefield moves into cyberspace.
Route1 DEFIMNET® (DEFense Identity Management NETwork) is a service delivery platform for identity and entitlement management designed to reside within all levels of classified and unclassified networks. Together with other defense network systems, DEFIMNET is sanctioned for use by military units to command and control confidentiality, integrity and availability.
DEFIMNET, as a service-oriented model, is a new approach to providing universal identity and entitlement management, enabling consistent information assurance across commands, services, agencies, platforms and systems.
DEFIMNET provides a framework that enables the sharing and exchange of critical, time-sensitive information between military organizations, international coalitions and civilian agencies. It is a clear reflection of agency mandates, such as DISA in the US, to move to an acquisition strategy highly focused on a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and pay-per-use services.

As the foundation of a defense-in-depth approach, DEFIMNET has been developed to support the requirements of the nation’s military forces, arming them with superior technology to gain power from information, access, and speed. It is an integral component of Net-Centric Warfare, and the information transfer and sharing that is made available by the Internet.
DEFIMNET provides the enabling technologies and componentized service delivery mechanisms for key aspects of constructs like FORCEnet, defined by Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Study Group XXI as an “…operational construct and architectural framework for Naval Warfare in the Information Age which integrates Warriors, sensors, networks, command and control, platforms, and weapons into a networked, distributed combat force, scalable across the spectrum of conflict from seabed to space and sea to land.” Entitlement-based complex event processing, delivered by DEFIMNET, will become an essential element in orchestrating information dissemination and access across all assets throughout the combat landscape.
DEFIMNET is built on a foundation of information assurance through identity management and encryption, and combines with entitlement-based communication to enable access to resources, such as C4ISR systems, from anywhere and at any time. It also provides unification of security across a variety of defense platforms to enable or revoke access to information and intelligence data in the field.

Route1 and Qwest Win Multi-Million Dollar Deal with US Department of Homeland Security
TORONTO and DENVER — October 1, 2008 — Route1 Inc. (TSX-V:ROI) and Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced they will deliver Route1’s highly secure identity management and dynamic Virtual Private Network (VPN) platform to the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The initial three-year deal is valued in excess of $2 million and is being delivered through Route1’s reseller partner, Qwest Government Services Inc. under the Washington Interagency Telecommunications System (WITS) 2001 Crossover contract. This agreement is the beginning of a multi-year implementation and covers the license of a DEFIMNET™ with the first 500 TruOFFICE™ subscriptions included. DHS has the option to acquire up to 95,000 additional subscriptions for TruOFFICE and other Route1 services over the life of the contract on the initial hardware.
DEFIMNET (DEFense Identity Management Network) is a scalable, high-availability identity and entitlement management infrastructure based on Route1’s award-winning MobiNET™ technology. Under terms of the agreement, Route1 will support DEFIMNET for CBP and other DHS component agencies. As one of the objectives, the implementation of Route1’s solutions will drive an overall virtualization and laptop reduction strategy currently being deployed throughout all levels of the US federal government.
