So why invest in a foreign small cap?
At this point you may be forgetting why anyone would invest in a small foreign company. Let me remind you. For those investors with a competitive advantage, there are serious opportunities to rake in outsized returns due to stock mispricings.

Let me give you an example.

The company is called China Marine Food Group (AMEX: CMFO). It sells salty seafood snacks like dried squid and barbecued sleeve fish.

To the average sane American investor, this sounds (1) gross and (2) not worth further research. But Motley Fool Global Gains co-advisor Tim Hanson would disagree on both counts. These snacks won't play in Peoria, but Tim notes that "they're basically the Chinese equivalent of potato chips." And boy is he glad he investigated further.

He found a company trading for a P/E ratio under 5, but after backing out the cash, the multiple was just 1.7 times earnings -- for a stock expecting more than 20% top-line growth.

If you've been following along, you can probably guess why it was so cheap: It's a very small Chinese company that makes questionable-sounding snacks. It operates in a country known for its government interference, not its corporate governance. Kraft this ain't, folks.

So is China Marine Food Group a buy?
As part of his duties as Global Gains co-advisor, Tim supplements the knowledge he gains at investor conferences with trips around the world. On his trips to China, for example, he meets with companies' management and tours their facilities. These meetings not only allow him to vet specific stock picks, but also allow him to compare and contrast companies, industries, and countries.

This on-the-ground experience is why he judged the risk to be worth the potential reward on China Marine Food Group when he recommended it back in May 2009. It's gone up over 140% since then, so it no longer trades at that 1.7-times earnings figure -- but Tim still rates the company a "Best Buy."


That article says 2016 but there were no USA books then, seems odd. With no books am surprised that most with the stock have not sold it as they can. It is still a mystery stock to me.

No trades since 10-08-19, but still a bid/ask

Last trade at .0135, been between .01 and .02 since july. Looks like 200,000 plus since then, not a lot dollar wise.

Seems a minimum of about 1/2 a $million is just sitting there with the owners unaware they can sell it.

Low in last 6 months is .009 on 5-7-2019 308,000 traded that is about $30k of stock. So it seems it can be sold for .01 at will.

well deregistered so one plus, another plus still active on NV. though that depends. sometimes its good to go revoked so someone else can take it over. but sometimes these can come back. though takes a few years usually.

'$hellKing' do you think they are still in biz. If not why is it still trading 6 years after last report?

Just curious, why are people buying it if out of biz? It is trading most weeks.

Just my opinion, but if CMFO is still in operation, which it would appear it is, and if we are holding shares in "CMFO", then we still own it! Even if it's in China! Unless they're just gonna ignore that fact or if they've pulled some sort of shell game on investors. Hard to say without any outright evidence thereof.

I'm of the opinion that at some point, and we may have already seen this previously, that CMFO will periodically buy back it's stock out of a portion of it's net income. Seems like a cheap way for CMFO to eventually take the company back private like it was originally. I recall something being said by the "company" that was it's intent before going "dark" back in 2014.

I can't think of any other logical reason for the present situation, but would welcome any other opinions, facts or ideas on the matter.

Well, almost six months later and CMFO pps at .025. I bought all the .035's and .03's I wanted at the "ask" these past weeks. Gotta be getting close to CMFO's all time low. Do you suppose the company is aware that there are still SH's, and more importantly, do they care? DD extremely hard to come by, so guess that explains a lot! ;p

Back at support? Picked up some under .045 on Friday. Seems like a good investment to me as they were selling for three times that amount a couple of weeks ago. Guess it's back to watching and waiting until further news. You never KNOW about CMFO? GLTA SH's!!

Nice upward movement in the price per share also, until that last trade at the close. Could it be that the company is buying back shares or is it just new investors? I couldn't resist selling off a few shares at a substantial profit today but I still have a lot more for later. I'm hoping we'll see even higher prices next week. That should get some attention here.

Just the fact that China Marine appears to still be a viable on going concern is reason for renewed optimism and interest in the stock. Did anyone happen to catch the date of that article in the link provided in Need4Speed's post? I was unable to see a date in my Chinese translation. lol! If anyone has an opinion on what might be happening with China Marine please feel free to share as I'm open to all possibilities.

Same here but don't think CMFO will take that long before the next pop. Hope not anyway. Something odd about that .45 pps on 5/24/16. That was about what the pps was when CMFO went dark in early 2014. The cost of shares bought on that day was about $135K. Whoever it was that got those those then could probably get a lot more for a lot less now, imo. Like those 100K shares that went for .07 not too long ago. Don't see those days too often. Sometimes they come back even after 7 or 10 years. Happens every now and then. The chinese arent very good returning emails either. but 300 bucks for 10k shares for a chance of them coming back to life and going .50, I'll take that risk. well would like 25k or so 50k max for me

And let's not forget CMFO's "Hi-Power" algae based "energy drink". A Chinese sort of "Red Bull". That product was expanding before "Darkness". This was once a HOT STOCK pick. I'd find it hard to believe they'd just shut down after they seemed to be doing so well and growing. I'm still trying to figure out what the deal was on 5/24/16 when 300K shares were bought up to .45 in about an hour, where it held til close. I was here for that and think there may be an encore performance at some point in the future. At least that's what I'm betting on. ;p

I hope they're still processing their "fresh catch" and "seafood snacks". In CMFO's last PR before going dark, they indicated that they would continue to update SH's periodically, which hasn't been the case. I've sent a couple of e-mails to them requesting a simple response and got NADA. When they said dark, they meant DARK! If anyone can shed some light on the darkness, I'd appreciate it! lol!

Dark Chinese cos are really HIT or MISS. You could get stuck in them for years or they could get suspended. But then again some just come right back out and go back to dollars. risk vs reward is ok i think. wouldnt bet the farm but ive had some Chinese stocks do good things later on.

$K, I've been following CMFO for years. I think they were trading on the NSYE when they "Voluntarily" decided to "Go Dark". If you read my previous post and did some DD on your own, you know their past so there isn't much more I can tell ya.

I WAS around on that last run in 05/16, and there were messages posted on this board that were deleted. That WHOLE time period was erased, but I made quite a bit of money on that run, and have been invested ever since. I still have no idea why "fish fell out of the sky" on that day. Just opinions and speculation.

NOBODY has been able to tell me anything about CMFO or they're just not saying. CMFO built a $6m cold storage warehouse in the year or so prior to going dark. The tsunami in Japan really hurt business there for a while given the radiation scare. CMFO survived that and were still operating although they took a financial hit just before the went dark. I don't know if they're buying back shares on random occasions or if it's somebody else. Wish I knew.

Although I hold more shares now than before, I'm just waiting for the next "Big Event" if/when it ever occurs. I noticed the spike in volume just a few days ago but no real movement in the pps, and decided to check the boards for any comments. I found yours. Now the B/A and vol are back to usual so I guess somebody wanted a 100K shares at .07. I held onto mine waiting for something better, later, maybe.

Maybe we should try calling CMFO or going to China for a visit. LOL!! If what I thought turned out to be true, this stock is WAY undervalued!! But you never can tell about these Chinese Co's?

How much assets do they have. I thought u couldnt deregister if you have more than 5 mil assets? Or is it 10 mil? I forget. But if you got assets you cant deregister you have to cash out I believe. But maybe they chinese do what they want....

Been watching a while. I watch a lot of dormant Chinese cos. Very common for them with high assets high revs and all and just go dark and never come back. Some do come back with dividends if they go public in China. Its scary these days bc SEC is suspending them and Finra deleting them.

In reviewing this CMFO board, it appears that it's missing a lot of its past posts within a specific time frame. Strange that nobody posted during that big spike on 5/24/16 and action afterwards. Anybody know anything about that?

I've been bottom feeding on this one for the past couple of months as CMFO seems like it is an excellent buy at this level if you go by the last available info. CMFO was valued at $126M in 2Q13 and had 27M in revenues. They were on "Hot Stock Pick" Lists in 2010 and Prescott Capital owned 23% of CMFO as late as 2/2014. CMFO seemed alive and well when it decided to "Go Dark" and delist itself from NASDAQ in 2014. The sentiment at that time was that CMFO would be taken "Private". Still waiting on that one unless they're doing it at random intervals with the last one being 5/24/16. Somebody bought 300K shares for $.45/shr. Could there be a repurchase or buyout ahead?? Based on the current PPS, CMFO's market value is only 1.19M which would seem unimaginable otherwise? Anybody know anything about any of this?

I'm fairly certain Prescott Capital no longer has a stake in CMFO but don't know when and how they disposed of 6.3M shares. I've tried calling PC but I've not gotten to speak with anyone. I emailed CMFO seeking any info but didn't get a response. Has anyone here had any contact with CMFO or know anything??

I am new to this board but have been following CMFO for more than five years. Since the company went "Dark" in 2014, DD has been hard to come by. Still searching and still buying. This was once a hot pick by some major players back in the day. Not sure what's up these days but don't think it's a shell. Who knows? Just my .05 worth of opinion.
