NEW YORK (Reuters) - Continental Airlines Inc (NYSE:CAL - News) posted a steeper second-quarter loss on Tuesday as the slump in business travel and fears about the H1N1 virus hurt revenue, and said it will cut its work force by 4 percent.

The airline also increased its domestic checked bag fee by $5, effective August 19, for those not prepaying online.

The net loss widened to $213 million, or $1.72 per share, from $5 million, or 5 cents per share, a year ago.

Excluding $44 million in special charges from the declining value of its aircraft, Continental lost $169 million, or $1.36 per share.

Revenue dropped 22.7 percent to $3.1 billion as business travelers cut back on travel or bought cheaper economy-class tickets. The H1N1 virus, once known as swine flu, cost the carrier about $50 million in passenger revenue.

The Houston-based company will cut 1,700 jobs and increase the bag fee as it grapples with the sharp revenue decline.

The carrier aims to generate about $100 million in annual benefits when the measures are fully implemented in 2010.

In addition to the bag fee, Continental increased its telephone reservation service charge by $5, effective immediately. The company said other revenue initiatives will be coming.

The new round of planned job cuts come after it eliminated 500 reservation agent positions. The company also offered leaves of absence for 700 flight attendants as well as employee voluntary furlough programs.

Mainline passenger revenue fell 22.9 percent on lower fares and a decline in passenger traffic. Mainline capacity shrank 7.3 percent in the quarter.

Continental is expecting delivery of seven Boeing 737 aircraft in the second half of 2009. The company looks to remove 29 additional Boeing 737s from service by January 2010.

Continental Airlines Announces Schedule for Houston-Rio de Janeiro Service and Opens Flights for Sale

HOUSTON, May 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) today announced that it will launch daily nonstop flights between its Houston hub at Bush Intercontinental Airport and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and through flight service between New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro beginning August 1, 2009. Effective today, the airline has made seat inventory available for sale in preparation for the start of service.

Continental plans to operate the daily service using a Boeing 767-200 aircraft, with 25 seats in BusinessFirst and 149 seats in economy. Flight CO129 will depart Houston at 9:15 p.m. arriving in Rio de Janeiro at 9:15 a.m. the next day. The return flight CO128 will depart Rio de Janeiro at 9:45 p.m. and arrive in Houston the following morning at 6:00 a.m. The nonstop flight will be timed to offer convenient flight connections at Continental's Houston hub to cities throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia.

Continental Airlines Reports May 2009 Operational Performance

HOUSTON, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) today reported a May consolidated (mainline plus regional) load factor of 80.9 percent, 0.3 points below the May 2008 consolidated load factor and a mainline load factor of 81.3 percent, the same as the May 2008 mainline load factor. The carrier reported a record domestic mainline May load factor of 84.7 percent, 0.3 points above the May 2008 domestic mainline load factor and an international mainline load factor of 78.0 percent, 0.3 points below May 2008.

During the month, Continental recorded a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on-time arrival rate of 83.5 percent and a mainline segment completion factor of 99.6 percent.

In May 2009, Continental flew 7.5 billion consolidated revenue passenger miles (RPMs) and 9.3 billion consolidated available seat miles (ASMs), resulting in a consolidated traffic decrease of 9.0 percent and a capacity decrease of 8.8 percent as compared to May 2008. In May 2009, Continental flew 6.8 billion mainline RPMs and 8.3 billion mainline ASMs, resulting in a mainline traffic decrease of 8.1 percent and a mainline capacity decrease of 8.1 percent as compared to May 2008. Morgan Stanley cut its estimates for the airline sector based on a forecast for higher oil prices and lower revenue, but says it'll likely be the last 2009 estimate cut it makes, meaning it's time to get more positive on the sector's likely "survivors." Firm added Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL, $5.89, +$0.04, +0.69%) and Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL, $9.64, +$0.42, +4.56%) to its survivor list, saying they've now priced in a sufficiently bearish outlook. Morgan also said other airlines will be hit by a liquidity squeeze due to higher oil in second half and an anemic rebound in 2010, reducing competition for the survivors.

New snag for Continental antitrust-immunity bid

DALLAS (AP) -- Continental Airlines' bid to work closely with United Airlines and others on trans-Atlantic service has hit a new snag, with the Justice Department seeking to review the plan.


The Transportation Department gave preliminary approval in April to Continental's request for antitrust immunity so it could coordinate prices and schedules with United.

But on Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder indicated his department wants a say in the matter.

"We have reached out to the Department of Transportation," Holder said. "I've had conversations with (Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood), and they have said they will work with us in making a determination in how this particular alliance should be viewed."

Holder made the comment during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, where Continental is based, told Holder he was concerned that a May 31 deadline from reviewing the antitrust-immunity bid had passed with no decision.

"We did ask the Transportation Department to allow our antitrust division to have some input," Holder said. He added that the issue should be settled in a matter of weeks.

Continental predicted it will win immunity.

Mary Clark, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based airline, said it was not unusual for the Transportation Department to discuss antitrust reviews with the Justice Department.

"We are pleased to hear the approval process is apparently coming to a close and remain confident the DOT will approve the application so we can begin bringing its benefits to consumers," she said.

Continental announced last year it would leave one alliance of global airlines and join another -- jumping from Delta Air Lines Inc.'s team to United's Star Alliance -- and seek to be included under Star's antitrust exemption.

(CAL) said Thursday. A recovery in business travel could happen quickly as the world economy gets stronger, he added, although there's no sign of a rebound yet. International travel has been hit by fears related to the spread of the H1N1 virus, Kellner said, although the market in Asia is showing recovery. The Houston airline said earlier that it lost $30 million of revenue in May, mainly on canceled flights to Mexico, as passengers stopped flying due to fears of the illness. "We've got to be flexible as we navigate the market," Kellner said. That includes adding passenger fees to match competitors and cutting route capacity to keep pace with passenger traffic. "We have had a very tough spring in the New York area," Keller said, calling on government regulators to assist with flight congestion there. "We need to work on short-term fixes for the New York air space. We need a long-term focus on fixing the air traffic control system." A modern ATC system could also save 10% on carbon emissions and fuel use, the executive said at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Transportation Conference in New York, which was Web cast. For the long term, Continental will continue to invest in its fleet of aircraft, including Boeing's new 787, Kellner said. "Our new fleet is a hedge against fuel," he said, adding that it paid off quickly to add winglets to older aircraft. Continental Airlines Reports May 2009 Operational Performance

HOUSTON, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) today reported a May consolidated (mainline plus regional) load factor of 80.9 percent, 0.3 points below the May 2008 consolidated load factor and a mainline load factor of 81.3 percent, the same as the May 2008 mainline load factor. The carrier reported a record domestic mainline May load factor of 84.7 percent, 0.3 points above the May 2008 domestic mainline load factor and an international mainline load factor of 78.0 percent, 0.3 points below May 2008.

During the month, Continental recorded a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on-time arrival rate of 83.5 percent and a mainline segment completion factor of 99.6 percent.

In May 2009, Continental flew 7.5 billion consolidated revenue passenger miles (RPMs) and 9.3 billion consolidated available seat miles (ASMs), resulting in a consolidated traffic decrease of 9.0 percent and a capacity decrease of 8.8 percent as compared to May 2008. In May 2009, Continental flew 6.8 billion mainline RPMs and 8.3 billion mainline ASMs, resulting in a mainline traffic decrease of 8.1 percent and a mainline capacity decrease of 8.1 percent as compared to May 2008. Domestic mainline traffic was 3.4 billion RPMs in May 2009, down 9.1 percent from May 2008, and domestic mainline capacity was 4.1 billion ASMs, down 9.5 percent from May 2008.

For May 2009, consolidated passenger revenue per available seat mile (RASM) is estimated to have decreased between 19.5 and 20.5 percent compared to May 2008, while mainline passenger RASM is estimated to have decreased between 19.0 and 20.0 percent compared to May 2008. Continental estimates that the H1N1 flu reduced consolidated passenger revenue by $30 million in May 2009.

For April 2009, consolidated passenger RASM decreased 13.1 percent compared to April 2008, while mainline passenger RASM decreased 11.3 percent compared to April 2008.

Continental's regional operations had a May load factor of 78.0 percent, 1.8 points below the May 2008 regional load factor. Regional RPMs were 771.3 million and regional ASMs were 988.8 million in May 2009, resulting in a traffic decrease of 16.2 percent and a capacity decrease of 14.3 percent versus May 2008.
