Wi-Fi Alliance WMM(TM) Power Save Certification Brings Robust Power Management to Handheld Wi-Fi(R) Devices
Certification program tests interoperability of features that offer significant improvements in Wi-Fi power consumption.
12/6/2005 9:02:11 AM
AUSTIN, Texas, Dec 06, 2005 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Wi-Fi Alliance now certifies features for Wi-Fi networks that will extend battery life for mobile devices. This extension of the Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM(TM)) program, called WMM(TM) Power Save, helps pave the way for rapid proliferation of Wi-Fi technology into phone handsets and other devices for which battery life is critical.
WMM Power Save gives device manufacturers and developers a robust framework to improve Wi-Fi power efficiency, via improved signaling capabilities and the opportunity to fine-tune power consumption. The certification for both access points and client devices uses mechanisms from the recently ratified IEEE 802.11e standard, and is an enhancement of legacy 802.11 power save.
"WMM Power Save has the potential to provide significant improvement in battery life for devices such as mobile handsets," said Wi-Fi Alliance Managing Director Frank Hanzlik. "This new program builds on our successful WMM Quality of Service program, which has certified more than 230 devices since its launch in September 2004, and is an important milestone in our efforts to support Wi-Fi in exciting new markets."
"As many as 55 million subscribers for Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones are expected in the consumer market alone by 2010, and this, combined with enterprise adoption, presents a tremendous market opportunity. Deploying devices with advanced power saving mechanisms like WMM Power Save offers manufacturers and carriers a critical advantage in a highly competitive consumer market," said Monica Paolini of Senza Fili Consulting.
A whitepaper entitled "WMM(TM) Power Save for Mobile and Portable Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) Devices" is available for free download at www.wi-fi.org. The whitepaper explores the market significance of WMM Power Save and presents guidance for proper implementation.
The following devices are the first to be Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) for WMM Power Save, and currently populate the program test bed:
* Atheros AR5002AP-2X Access Point

The universal Net access pipe dream
Commentary: Municipal WiFi efforts unlikely to survive
By John C. Dvorak
Last Update: 6:34 PM ET Nov. 30, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- Every few months we seem to hear about another initiative by a U.S. city to deploy free wireless Internet access.
The latest entry, New Orleans, is still struggling just to get the lights back on, months after Hurricane Katrina caused massive flooding, destruction and death.
Nevertheless, New Orleans looks to be the first and only big city to actually implement a WiFi plan.
This will provide great access for an entire (reduced) population. It should help New Orleans to recover. But the likelihood of it becoming a larger trend is nil and you can be sure it will eventually be killed there too.
If the Internet was struggling and it was impossible to make a buck by being the toll collector on the Information Superhighway, then free wireless (802.11/WiFi) access for the masses would be possible. As things stand today free access to the Internet, no matter how noble the rationale, will impinge on far too many vested interests.
Too many people are making money on connectivity.
This will come to a head when a newer form of wireless communications called WiMAX appears in the next two years. It's being pushed hard by Intel (INTC:
Intel Corporation

WiMAX has a single point connection radius of approximately 10-30 miles. Thus it should become a favorite technology for municipal Internet connectivity. Many believe it will relegate the weaker 802.11x WiFi networks with their smallish 300-1500 foot radius to only local area network status.
In an ideal world you'd have a municipality covered by WiMAX for the connection to the Internet. That connection would then be redistributed through homes and offices with WiFi. The two technologies do interoperate.
In fact WiFi is now so entrenched in various pay-per-hour venues that it's unlikely that WiMAX will ever get a foothold. Powerhouses McDonalds and Starbucks, for example, are making money on the side with their WiFi connection schemes and the monthly fee they charge. With WiMAX someone could come into a Starbucks, buy a cappuccino and log on to the big municipal net with a WiMAX card thus cutting Starbucks out of the picture.
Starbucks and McDonalds are hardly the only players. T-Mobile has a WiFi roaming service they sell as do other cell phone carriers.
All the major hotel chains expect to make and extra $10 a night per guest for Internet connectivity too.
Whenever anyone offers free Internet access you begin to hear loud complaining about it. JetBlue's free Internet access in airport terminals is under constant attack, for example.
While the nation would benefit greatly from universal access with both Wifi and WiMAX there is just too much money to be made for this to ever happen. It may happen in other countries and investors should take note -- France sounds like a candidate to me -- but not in the USA.
The sad thing is that this would actually make the economy stronger and end any issues over the so-called digital divide.
The best effort to create universal free municipal access previous to New Orleans was in Philadelphia. These efforts were quickly foiled by Comcast (CMCSK:

Some years ago I believed that a net connection in a hotel, or anywhere for that matter, would be like running water or electricity. There'd always be a socket or faucet someplace where you could get a little of either for free. You do not pay an extra $10 a night in a hotel room so you can use the shower.

Perhaps small towns with less political pressure may mange to deploy some free systems. But it seems as if it will be impossible in the big cities.
To the citizens of New Orleans: enjoy it while you have it.

In-Stat Survey Reveals Wireless Providers Making Modest Progress in Improving Customer Service
11/30/2005 8:01:01 AM
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Nov 30, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Wireless service providers are having some success in reducing customer service churn and complaint rates, but they still have significant challenges ahead, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). About one in eight wireless customers considered their wireless carrier's customer service "excellent," although the results for individual U.S. carriers ranged from a low of 7% to a high near 21%. The high-tech research firm found several customer service topics that received praise and complaint for each wireless carrier regarding hold times, service policies, first-call problem resolution, and customer service representative attitude. These findings are the result of an In-Stat survey of U.S. wireless subscribers and of extensive interviews with key wireless industry insiders.
"Customer service efforts appear to be contributing both to churn rate reduction, a key factor in company financial performance, and in the reduction of the relative complaint rate," said David Chamberlain, In-Stat analyst. "Nevertheless, a substantial number of subscribers are, or could soon become, defectors."
A recent report by In-Stat found the following:
-- In most cases, satisfaction with customer service nearly mirrors subscribers' overall attitude toward the carrier.
-- Efficient handling of billing problems is now considered one of the best parts of the customer service experience. Lengthy hold times and one-call resolution are the worst.
-- Customers are indifferent about Web-based or voice-response self-care initiatives.
-- Both the newest and longest-term customers are the least likely to churn. However, among those in the middle -- customers who have been with the carrier from one to two years -- more than 25% indicate they probably or definitely will switch to another carrier.
The report, "Wireless Customer Service: Not Over the Hump Yet" (#IN0502093MCM), covers the results of a survey of more than 1,100 U.S. wireless customers and extensive interviews with key wireless industry insiders. The report answers the questions: "Is the quality of customer service important in reducing churn?" and, "Are the latest customer service initiatives undertaken by U.S. wireless carriers working?" Wireless carriers covered in depth include Sprint PCS, Nextel, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Cingular/AT&T Wireless. This report is intended for customer service executives in all wireless companies, worldwide.

The 802.22 Frequency Advantage
One of the biggest challenges to wireless communications is the limited "hot spot" range of transmission on frequencies currently being utilized by the industry. These frequencies, specifically the 802.11 and 802.16 have "hot spot" ranges of up to 300ft under only the best conditions and are typically utilized by businesses such as internet cafés. It was recently determined by the FCC that an unused bandwidth will soon be available for commercial wireless use! The availability of bandwidth, advanced penetration capabilities and highly secure transfer of information on this frequency make it a very attractive solution for new wireless technologies. This frequency is also an excellent solution for the quick transfer of larger digital video files. With the potential broadcast range of up to 20 miles and secure transfer of information, the advantages of the 802.22 frequency are unmistakable.
Our Exciting Innovations
"The WF205 will be the first wireless system which enables comprehensive and cost-effective ship-board satellite connectivity. Using existing wireless infrastructure in alliance with our state-of-the-art system, we are light years ahead of any of our competitors."
WF205 System
The WF205 System by WiFi Wireless, Inc. is a revolutionary, fully integrated nav-aid system using laser gyro controlled platforms. These platforms utilize no moving parts and provide fast and accurate pitch, roll and rate of turns on three axis. Our system is wireless and is powered at only 24Volts DC. With virtually wireless operation, our system is designed to be used with existing satellite infrastructure, offering drastic and immediate savings to the customer by eliminating the need for dedicated cabling. The use of hundreds of miles of cabling involved in traditional systems not only proves costly to install and maintain, but causes delay in information transfer and can translate to up to a 30 DBI loss. The WF205 is designed specifically to work accurately in extremely severe weather conditions, and on integrated bridges. The full incorporation of the Inmarsat modem and the use of CRTBA(TM) technology (Controlled Reception and Transmission Beam Antenna) dramatically improves signal stability and reception with virtually no losses or degradation.
CTC (Container Tracking Chip)
Once a ship becomes wi-fi enabled with our system, the possibilities are seemingly limitless. WiFi Wireless, Inc. has a respected panel of engineers developing companion products to be used in conjunction with the WF205 System, such as our CTC device. This device will allow a user to continuously monitor and manage their vessel's cargo load; including real-time alerts for possible tampering, temperature fluctuation and/or deterioration of cargo containers. Through the use of the unique WiFi Wireless Inc. Point-To-Multipoint secure connection software, our customers can access this information anywhere in the world. Serial interface is also provided to facilitate integration with other satellite systems.
Wi-Fi stands for "Wireless Fidelity"
Wi-Fi is Freedom
A fast-growing segment of Wi-Fi wireless technology user, the "mobile professional," requires constant, fast and secure access to their corporate networks, e-mail, instant messages, and internet access. Imagine access from your home, hotel room, airport, conference room or anywhere... without wires. Wi-Fi technology makes this a reality. Service providers and wireless ISPs are using Wi-Fi technology to distribute Internet connectivity within individual homes and businesses as well as apartments and commercial complexes. Small and large businesses, campuses and Government agencies can move entire offices without moving cables or installing complicated access infrastructure. Many corporations also provide wireless networks to their off-site and telecommuting workers to use at home or in remote offices. Wi-Fi Wireless Technology is changing the way the world does business!
Wi-Fi networks use radio technologies across all the available wireless technologies in IEEE 802.11a ,802.11b or 802.11g, 802.16 and the future of 802.22 to provide secure, reliable, fast wireless connectivity. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance Organization, Wi-Fi® , allows you to connect to the internet from virtually anywhere, at speeds of up to 54Mbps. The Wi-Fi Alliance (formerly WECA) is the global Wi-Fi organization that created the Wi-Fi brand. A nonprofit organization, the Alliance was formed in 1999. The Wi-Fi Alliance has instituted a test suite that defines how member products are tested to certify that they are interoperable with other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products. Thanks to the Wi-Fi Alliance, you don't have to read the fine print or study technical manuals: just look for the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED logo and color-coded Standard Indicator Icons to match interoperable products.

Battle for Web Control May Not Be Over

U.S. Claims Victory but the Battle for Web Control May Not Be Over
TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) -- The United States claimed victory this week in the contest to keep control of the computers crucial for directing Internet traffic. But approval Friday of a plan to leave Washington squarely in charge hasn't fully ended the debate: The European Union and a host of other countries are suggesting that a new multinational forum, which delegates to a U.N. technology summit also agreed to set up, simply delays the battle for another day.
The forum, they say, still could ultimately leave several countries -- and not the United States alone -- with key decisions about domain names and the computers that direct the Internet's flow of information, commerce and dissent.
The computers under dispute, known as root servers, act as the Internet's master directories so Web browsers and e-mail programs can find other computers. Users around the world check those directories millions of times a day without ever knowing it.
Although Pakistan and other countries sought a takeover of the directories by an international body such as the United Nations, negotiators ultimately agreed late Tuesday, as time ran out, to a create an open-ended, nonbinding international forum for raising important Internet issues.
As the three-day U.N. World Summit on the Information Society ended Friday, delegates from 174 countries approved a five-page platform outlining the future of Internet governance along with prescriptions for expanding access worldwide and guarding the free flow of information, ideas and knowledge.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to convene the new Internet Governance Forum early next year. A precise location had not yet been selected, though Greece has offered to host.
Details of the forum's agenda were still being worked out, but organizers said it would bring together government, business and civil leaders and could cover spam, cybercrime and other issues beyond the addressing system.
Because negotiators had watered down language of the platform to reach agreement, many questions remain about how the forum might influence the United States and the quasi-independent agency to which it has delegated authority, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN.
"The real result of WSIS (World Summit) is that the debate over ICANN and Internet governance will be prolonged for another five years," said Milton Mueller, an Internet governance expert at Syracuse University. "The U.S. can claim a short-term victory but faces a long-term war of attrition that will gradually erode its position."
Annan was blunt in his assessment.
"The United States deserves our thanks for having developed the Internet and making it available to the world," the U.N. head told delegates. "But I think you also all acknowledge the need for more international participation in discussions of Internet governance issues."
But on the sidelines, other delegates acknowledged the deal was vague.
"We haven't resolved everything, but the principle is that all governments have an equal role in responsibility," said Yoshio Utsumi, secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union, the U.N. agency that organized the summit.
The 25-member EU bloc said the deal would, in the end, give more countries a voice on domain name policies, including the prickly situation of providing domain suffixes in languages other than English.
EU spokesman Martin Selmayr said the final "inclusive and global" deal was largely based on the EU's proposal, particularly the creation of the international forum and a declaration that no country should be involved in decisions affecting another country's country-code suffix, such as ".cn" for China.
Though the EU didn't get all it wanted, it got "a framework for a more international approach," Selmayr said. "That is, for us, the important development."
Even following the deal, some delegates continued to seek a greater U.N. role through the ITU.
"The Internet has become such an important global network and an important infrastructure, that it goes beyond the framework of one state," Russian Information Technologies Minister Leonid Reiman told Itar-Tass. "ITU has proved it is capable of doing the job."
David Gross, the U.S. State Department's top official on Internet policy, said simply that the deal preserved "the unique role of the United States government in assuring the reliability and stability of the Internet."
Negotiators on both sides said that the talks, which began in earnest on Sunday, were fierce before a final decision was reached the night before the summit's opening.
Pakistan's Sarbuland Khan, executive coordinator of the UN's task force on communications technologies, said the agreement would bring countries closer "to help continue the dialogue and slowly move to a more participatory and inclusive approach."
Ultimately, the agreement came after intense political scrutiny, something that had not really taken place in the 1990s.
"That's what happened here at WSIS, which was long overdue," said Hans Klein, a professor at Georgia Tech. "The political system came in and gave it a thorough review. The irony is even though Europe has been critical of ICANN, they have given their blessing to it. It's like the Europeans re-elected George Bush."

Technology Summit Wraps Up in Tunisia
Friday November 18, 9:48 am ET

Summit on Expanding Internet Access Around the World Ends With Promise to Narrow the Digital Divide
TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) -- A crucial summit on expanding Internet access around the world ended Friday with a firm promise to narrow the digital divide -- but little in government funding to make it happen.
The World Summit on the Information Society originally was conceived to raise consciousness about the divide between the haves and have-nots, and to raise money for projects to link up the global village, particularly Africa and Asia and South America.
But instead, it was overshadowed by a lingering resentment about who should oversee the domain names and technical issues that allow people from Pakistan to Peru surf Web sites for information, news and consumer goods.
"They have promised and promised and promised, and it's not the first time that they have promised this," said Diallo Mohamadou, a telecommunications consultant from Senegal. "In 2000, they promised to connect all the small villages far away from the big cities in Africa to the Internet. Five years later and nothing has happened."
Negotiators from more than 100 countries had agreed on the eve of the meeting to leave the United States in charge of the Internet's addressing system, averting a U.S.-EU showdown at this week's U.N. technology summit. But resentment over perceived U.S. control persisted.
Yoshio Utsumi, secretary-general of the International Telecommunications Union, which helped oversee the summit, said governments, private industry and others must follow through on agreements made this week.
"We haven't resolved everything, but the principle is that all governments have an equal role in responsibility," he told The Associated Press. "Internet communications technology is an opportunity for development, but at the same time we do have the risk of digital divide."
He said it could take years to see the outcome.
"It is not the end, just the beginning, but the homework is enormous," Utsumi said. "The summit itself ended, but many, many meetings, action and partnership programs must start."
Despite the pledges to expand access and lower costs, some warned that it would take not just commitments of money, but time and resources.
"People can see the light at the end of the tunnel but they have to find the ways to keep going," said Marshall Smith, program director for the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, which makes educational materials for students and teachers in Africa and elsewhere available free of charge.
Another thread of concern was keeping the Internet a forum for free speech and dissent.
"It is vital that the Internet remain a neutral medium open to all in order to realize that access for our citizens," John Marburger, director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a not-so-subtle swipe at Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Tunisia's selection as the host of the summit has raised eyebrows. On Thursday, the head of Reporters Without Borders was ordered out of the country after arriving at the airport. Earlier this week, human rights groups said Tunisian and foreign reporters had been harassed and beaten.
"It is the role of governments to ensure that this freedom of expression is available to its citizens and not to stand in the way of people seeking to send and receive information across the Internet," Marburger said.

miles between towers. I've been telling ChangeWave readers that this
was the "next big thing" for quite some time now - only I've
counseled them to be patient.
But it's NOT time for patience any longer. And not time for
procrastination in buying into this wealth-builder, either.
With Intel's introduction of dual Wi-Fi and WiMAX chips on one piece
of silicon...
...plus fully compliant WiMAX systems capable of sending 10-megabit
bandwidth to WiMAX receivers for less that $50,000 a system...
...WiMAX deployments are about to EXPLODE!
Billions & Billions to Be Served
What do folks in Beijing, San Paulo, Moscow and New Delhi all have
in common?
If you guessed WiMAX, you're right! They're already implementing
this technology in China, Russia, India, Brazil -- all the
fastest-growing economies in the world.
And, it's already taking off even faster than we expected. So why
such a love affair with this new technology? Why do we need it when
we've got landlines? And why are WiMAX networks worldwide about to
take off at warp-speed?
1. Cost
It's incredibly difficult and costly to put fiber underground or
string overhead lines in countries with little to no existing
infrastructure.
But with WiMAX, you can dot the landscape with transmitters and
receivers at much lower expense. Countries like China -- desperate
to get its communications capabilities up-to-snuff before it hosts
the Olympics in 2008 -- save billions of dollars and decades by
going WiMAX.
2. Speed
How fast is it? Lightning fast! 75 megabits per second -- that's
quick enough for picture-perfect full-screen video.
And the market for this new technology numbers in the billions. Plus
- if you act now - you're grabbing a ringside seat right on the
ground floor of one of the most exciting investment opportunities of
a lifetime.
Invest in WiMAX Now because...
* It's already rolling in developing markets throughout the world.
* Soon we'll see coverage in virtually every corner of the globe.
* Heavyweights like Intel - eager to get a piece of this
rapid-growth pie -- are investing in making it happen.
* Speeds are incredible: 7-10-times faster.
* Mobile broadband access is a white-hot market RIGHT NOW.
* Plus WiMAX can also provide "last-mile" broadband access from
wired networks that is fast AND cheap.

My Favorite WiMAX Stock...
It's a TRIPLE sometime in the next 18 months. And when you see this
stock likely be bought out at a huge premium shortly after that...
...you'll kick yourself if you don't get in now.
The rollout of WiMAX broadband is now hitting critical mass in China
and India -- where this company is the #1 equipment provider -- and
several other places throughout the world.
It's a relatively small company now -- just about 200 million in
annual sales at last count -- but it's about to get much bigger in a
hurry. Consensus estimates peg growth at almost 300% this year
alone!
And you know what happens to small stocks on the cusp of rapid
growth -- they SOAR!
When I take the company's revenue growth -- and earnings that should
triple this year, thanks to increased profit margins -- I see a
$30-$32 stock (one selling at about 10 bucks as I write).
Are there competitors? Sure -- Alcatel, Cisco and Ericsson, among
others.
But I zeroed in on this one stock for three very good reasons:
1. Focus. Unlike most of its competitors, this isn't some sideline
business for this company. The WiMAX crusade is the very reason for
its existence -- and crusaders fight very hard for what they believe
in.
2. Experience. They have already built WiMAX systems in 80 countries
around the world. It has a huge head-start in China, counting all
four of that country's major operators as satisfied clients.
3. Intellectual property rights. Other people can build these
systems, but it'll cost them. This company owns much of the
intellectual property behind the WiMAX revolution.
So please, don't miss this opportunity. Right now, we are smack at
the sweet spot of this incredible ChangeWave.
We're going to see rapid deployment of WiMAX over the next couple
years. If you blink, you'll miss it. If you get on board now, you'll
enjoy the ride of your life.

*** The Death of the "Microsoft Economy"
I'll explain what this means in just a moment.
But first, I want to give you the name of another tech stock, which
we just added to our ChangeWave Buy List: Apple Computer (AAPL).
All our latest research shows conclusively that the overall
PC-centric tech business is soft, unless you are Dell. And we only
want our money on RISING waves of demand.
And that, my friend, is where Apple comes in -- which I am adding to
our Ballast Growth list with a $100 target.
Our Director of Research Michael Shulman says it well: "Investors
are debating whether the iPod will pull Mac sales. Our most recent
Alliance survey results end the debate -- ChangeWave's
early-adopting, Windows- and Linux-using professionals are hooked on
the iPod and are planning to purchase Macs for their homes at a
faster rate than they plan to buy HP computers.
"Why Macintoshes? Reduced risk of viruses and the ease of
integrating media, not just iPods. This is not the beginning of the
end of a fad, but the end of the beginning of the rebirth of Apple."
Short and sweet -- buy Apple at $36 or under any time you can. The
bottom-line impact of these Mac sales is HUGE and NOT priced into
the stock. Again, our target is $100.
Goodbye Mr. Softie
What do Bill Gates, Larry Ellison and John Chambers all have in
common?
Yeah, right -- they've all got enough money to buy most of the
Caribbean. But what else? The answer, my friend, is as clear as the
nose on your face.
These three guys -- and dozens more like them -- are all washed up.
Don't get me wrong -- or think I'm crazy. All the traditional tech
kingpins, the guys who completely transformed the world we live in,
still have nice businesses. They can buy and sell us 100-times over
with their chump change.
But -- and this is critical to your future investing success -- when
it comes to the latest "next big thing" -- the next huge
transformations that will forever change the world AGAIN -- these
guys don't have a pulpit...they don't have the power...and they
don't have a clue.
Please take this warning very, very seriously. If you don't heed it,
it could cost you some serious money.
Investing in traditional tech stocks right now -- the kind almost
everyone owns -- could be deadly to your financial well-being.
Yesterday's News
Take Information Technology, the leading edge of business
development just a brief while ago. It's now just a commodity
business. And owning commodity stocks is NOT the way to grow rich.
Think I'm kidding?
Intel's having a heck of a time. The magic word used to be "faster."
Every time a new, faster microprocessor came out, buyers lined up to
get the newest equipment.
Problem is, American business finally wised up. All the older
computers have plenty of speed for the tasks 99.9% of us use them
for. The recession was the tipping point. Corporate IT guys saw
their budgets slashed -- and companies aren't going to start wasting
money on unnecessary tech "upgrades" again anytime soon.
They're only spending money where it makes a REAL difference.
So kiss whatever thought you had of a recovery in the old-time tech
leaders goodbye. It AIN'T gonna happen. The Microsoft economy is
DEAD!
The Only Thing Certain in This World Is Change
We chose the name ChangeWave Investing for our service because it so
accurately reflects the nature of the world today.
You see, it is undeniably true that the only constant in the world
is change. And once you learn to invest on the cusp of change, you
will learn to ride fast-moving trends to huge profits.
In the 1990s...
...the explosive growth in personal computers was a ChangeWave.
Microsoft was the choice for huge investing profits.
...the Internet phenomenon was a ChangeWave that made "email" part
of everyone's vocabulary. Folks got rich with AOL.
...everyone started walking around with cell phones "stuck to" their
heads, another ChangeWave. Investors in Nokia cleaned up.
So, are Microsoft, AOL (Time Warner) and Nokia the best choices to
make you rich now? No - as I've told you, they are DEAD as growth
investments.
As anyone who has ever spent time at the beach can tell you, even
the biggest waves eventually peter out. Dial-up Internet is dead.
PCs are commodities. And cellphones are now just part of everyday
life.
But fortunately for us, more changes just keep coming - not just in
technology, but throughout our economy. And at ChangeWave Investing,
we just keep riding them, compounding our wealth at every turn.

BOSTON (AP) - Suddenly the universe of downloadable audio files known as podcasts seems as enormous as the Internet. Name a topic - from the weather in Asuncion to the ZigBee wireless technology - and there is a podcast about it.
But while the Internet's vastness is accessible because of deep-probing search engines, comparably authoritative services for podcasts and other multimedia haven't really emerged.
That's because search programs are primed to catalog text. When they encounter an audio or video file, generally they determine the contents by reading the titles and other descriptive tags, known as "metadata," that creators voluntarily add.
It's useful, but much like examining only the first few lines of a Web site. Reading the whole thing is a lot better.
(AP) Suranga Chandratillake of Blinkx is photographed at his office in San Francisco, Thursday, Nov. 17,...
Full Image
With that in mind, a few companies are trying to make search engines actually listen to big audio and video files. From there, speech-to-text software can generate written transcripts, which are searched in addition to metadata.
Perhaps best known has been Blinkx Inc., an information-management startup that gets its speech-to-text software from Autonomy Corp.
Now comes BBN Technologies Inc., a defense contractor that developed elements of the Internet. After tinkering with speech-to-text programs it created for U.S. intelligence services, BBN has produced Podzinger, a Web service that mines the content of podcasts.
A third service, Podscope, from a broadcast-monitoring company called TV Eyes Inc., performs a similar trick, but with a twist. CEO David Ives says Podscope uses some voice-recognition technology but mainly scans for phonemes - the individual sounds that make up syllables - rather than full words.
America Online Inc. is a big fan - it's due to begin using Podscope as its podcasting search engine this fall.
(AP) BBN Technologies Delta Division's president Alex Laats poses at company offices in Cambridge, Mass,...
Full Image
I tried all three, and found BBN's Podzinger best at podcast searches because it offered the most user-friendly options.
- Podzinger lets you expand the links in search results to read a podcast's metadata, so you can quickly tell what kind of show it is. Podscope does, too; Blinkx does not.
- Podzinger lets you stream a podcast if you don't feel like taking on a time-consuming download. Podscope handles that too; Blinkx seems to do it only for video clips.
- The results displayed by Podzinger helpfully include segments of the transcript include the terms you were looking for. Then, by clicking on the transcript, you can instantly play a sample of the file from that moment.
That turns out to be the big differentiator, in my view.
(AP) BBN Technologies Delta Division's president Alex Laats poses with an Apple iPod in front of a...
Full Image
Podscope also lets you jump to moments in which it believes your term is mentioned. But you have to spend time listening to each snippet because the phoneme engine doesn't produce a transcript you can visually scan.
Blinkx shows a transcript, but you still have to cue up a clip from the beginning and find on your own the moment you think your subject might come up.
Blinkx appears to search the biggest pool of material - not only 45,000 podcasts but also millions of hours of TV broadcasts and homegrown video clips, which are displayed cleverly in thumbnail images alongside search results. This week Blinkx added lectures from Harvard, Princeton and other universities.
Podscope's podcast scope also is about 45,000, while Podzinger catalogs only about 11,000. But that should expand greatly, and incorporate video, as the site leaves beta mode.
To be sure, none of these sites has mastered audio recognition, a notoriously tricky beast. Computers still cannot consistently understand all the innumerable accents, mispronunciations and other nonstandard diction that colors human speech.
Even so, considering that the feds pay BBN a lot of money for real-time analysis of overseas broadcasts in Arabic and other languages, I found it funny that early in my test the phrase "Osama bin Laden" got no hits on Podzinger. Neither did "Usama bin Laden," the spelling often used by federal authorities.
When I shortened the search to "Osama," that brought up an episode of "MSNBC Countdown" in which host Keith Olbermann uttered the name of the terrorist mastermind - though Podzinger heard it as an Anglicized "Osama bin Lawton." I couldn't check whether the fault lay with a too-sharp pronunciation by Olbermann; the original material was gone from the Web.
To Podscope's credit, the same search returned a result in which a podcaster pronounced the name as "Oosama bin Layden." Nice catch.
Blinkx made a geopolitical gaffe by transcribing the following snippet from a Fox News broadcast about a political murder in Lebanon:
"... pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud, citing a cell phone call Lahoud received minutes before the murder."
as:
"... pro-Syrian President Emile of food citing a cell phone colic who received minutes before the murder."
Do errors like that matter? To some degree. That Lebanon-Syria clip doesn't appear if you search for "Lahoud." But it does come up if you hunt for "colic."
You're not likely to encounter that non sequitur on sites that don't convert speech to text.
For example, I got precise results from Yahoo Inc. (YHOO)'s podcast search engine, which launched in October and claims tens of thousands of podcasts. It mines metadata and reviews written by listeners to raise the chance a search will yield a relevant result.
All nine results about "colic" were indeed related to babies' dreaded crying fits. (I got no hits for the term on Podscope and one on Podzinger.)
The good news for speech-to-text services is that they might improve with use. That's partly because the engines can learn better ways to determine words from their context.
Blinkx co-founder Suranga Chandratillake illustrates the process this way: If a podcast were made about the topics in this story, a computer probably would be right if it detected the phrase "recognize speech."
But in a podcast about last year's tsunami, the computer would do better to hear almost the same sounds as "wreck a nice beach."

Strike Up the Broadband
By TheStreet.com Staff

Cramer is bullish on Israeli wireless broadband connectivity company Alvarion (ALVR:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) as a play on the expected growth in WiMax.
WiMax, said Cramer, could be huge as it has a range of 30 miles as opposed to WiFi, which is measured in feet.
Alvarion has made a profit in just two years of its 10-year history, though, said Cramer. But, at $7.67 -- where the stock closed Thursday -- the stock is cheap, he said.
Cramer believes that Alvarion's stock has bottomed and that the catalyst for the stock to move higher should come early next year when industry standards for WiMax are expected to be decided upon.
Asked about the possibility of Alvarion getting acquired, Cramer said he never speculates on takeovers when a company's earnings are declining. He is "playing it for the earnings, and they've got to come back."

AXCESS Announces Integration of Wi-Fi, Active and Semi-Active RFID to Track and Protect Assets, People and Vehicles Over the Wireless LAN
AXCESS to exhibit and present solution at Active RFID Summit trade show
11/15/2005 7:01:27 AM
SAN ANTONIO, Nov 15, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Active RFID Summit USA 2005 -- AXCESS International Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: AXSI.OB), a leading provider of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems, today announced that Asset Activator(TM) successfully integrates 812.11b/g Wi-Fi, Active, and Semi-Active RFID to automatically inventory, track and protect assets over the existing wireless LAN. This marks the first solution to utilize the highly accurate "On-Demand" RFID tag activation methodology with Wi-Fi. Now, lower costs are realized and it is easier to install an automatic asset management system in the enterprise. The solution is being demonstrated this week in Booth #t7 at the Active RFID Summit in San Antonio, November 15 - 16, 2005.
"Using the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure in the enterprise has obvious advantages in both economics and the ease of installation," commented Allan Griebenow, president and CEO of AXCESS. "However, Wi-Fi access points are rarely so numerous or correctly positioned to use as actual receivers for RFID tag transmissions. The best of both worlds exists when our low cost RFID receivers can connect to the network easily using standard Wi-Fi adapters and the existing Wi-Fi access point infrastructure."
The Asset Activator solution utilizes a "Control Point" architecture to locate, track, count and protect tagged assets by activating the tags on-demand at key strategic points in and around the enterprise. Now, by using off-the-shelf Wi-Fi adapters, users can seamlessly connect into the corporate network through legacy Wi-Fi access points.
AXCESS' patented ActiveTag RFID product uses small, battery powered tags (generically called "semi-active" tags) that when automatically activated, transmit a wireless message typically 30 to 100 feet to hidden palm size receivers. The receivers are connected via an industry standard interface to existing security alarm equipment or networked on the existing corporate network. Optionally, the tag system can also be used to trigger security video recording and live remote video transmission. The tags are used for a variety of other security applications including automatic personnel access to facilities, automatic vehicle access to parking areas and yards, as well as special purpose sensing. Automatic email alerting and paging is offered for rapid response to security incidents.
About AXCESS International Inc.
AXCESS International Inc. (AXSI), headquartered in greater Dallas, TX, provides Active and Semi-Active RFID (radio frequency identification) systems for asset management, physical security and supply chain efficiencies. The battery-powered (active) RFID tags locate, identify, track, monitor, count, and protect people, assets, inventory, and vehicles. AXCESS' RFID solutions are supported by its integrated network-based, streaming digital video (or IPTV) technology. Both patented technologies enable applications including: automatic "hands-free" personnel access control, automatic vehicle access control, automatic asset management, and sensor management. AXCESS is a portfolio company of Amphion Capital Partners LLC.

As previously stated, i myself do not own a single

very interesting. this is why it caught my eye because it was doing the israel viewing.
I watched it live on our Israeli T.V just now.
I am quite sure they used these news items as
they are very catchy to the eye, but mean little
for the companys financials or reputation.
Some companies do not need too deep a check in
order to strike them off completely.
In fact i believe that 90-95% of PKs are not worth

I admit though that some PKs are worth for some momentum
trading but definitely not for investing.

I am sure you did not, you just mentioned it as you

I will not post it on the specific WFIW board,
as i do not like to bash stocks in general, but
in this forum i feel it very appropriate to try
weeding 'bad' stocks, while highlighting the
better ones.
This PK stock offers no info whatsoever, and the
precious little available data is not promising
at all.Quite the contrary in fact.

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Wi_Fi.html
Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc. The term is promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Any products tested and approved as "Wi-Fi Certified" (a registered trademark) by the Wi-Fi Alliance are certified as interoperable with each other, even if they are from different manufacturers. A user with a "Wi-Fi Certified" product can use any brand of access point with any other brand of client hardware that also is certified. Typically, however, any Wi-Fi product using the same radio frequency (for example, 2.4GHz for 802.11b or 11g, 5GHz for 802.11a) will work with any other, even if not "Wi-Fi Certified."
Formerly, the term "Wi-Fi" was used only in place of the 2.4GHz 802.11b standard, in the same way that "Ethernet" is used in place of IEEE 802.3. The Alliance expanded the generic use of the term in an attempt to stop confusion about wireless LAN interoperability.
