Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF) expects fourth-quarter operating profit to be its highest ever, up 64% Y/Y to 15.1T won ($14.1B), although the figure still fell short of analyst forecasts, pushing shares down 3% in South Korea.
The results come amid a leadership vacuum at the top of the company. Its chairman is incapacitated, de facto leader Lee Jae-yong is in prison and Samsung Electronics replaced all three of its co-CEOs in late October.

Samsung's battery woes continue as lawsuits spread to Galaxy Note 5, S6 and S7 models
* Plaintiffs claimed devices other than Note 7 are overheating and catching fire
* Included the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, S6 Active, S7, S7 Edge, S7 Active and Note
* Said Samsung should provided them with the same Note 7 exchange program

The Samsung Note 7 fiasco may be over, but it seems the South Korean firm's troubles are just starting.
The electronics maker has been hit with multiple lawsuits following reports that other smartphone models are plagued with similar battery issues – including the Galaxy S6, S7 Edge and Note 5.
Cases in three US states have claimed that Samsung was aware of the battery issues and fire hazards for years, but opted not to inform its customers.

Battery crackdown to prevent repeat of Samsung's Note 7 debacle

Electronics manufacturers will be subject to more stringent safety regulations following the global recall of Samsung's faulty Galaxy Note 7 phone that overheated and, in some cases, exploded.
The South Korean government has said it will conduct regular inspections and impose strict safety requirements for manufacturers that use lithium-ion batteries following the Samsung case, which became a global embarrassment for the company.
"We ask that the industry shares the view that making efforts to ensure safety is equally as critical as developing new products through technological innovation," said Jeong Marn-ki, the South Korean vice minister for trade, industry and energy.

The government's crackdown comes as a Korean watchdog confirmed Samsung's findings that the problem with the Note 7 originated in faulty batteries. The electronics giant's investigation into the cause of the fires found that lithium-ion batteries from two manufacturers were to blame.
The watchdog hasn't announced any penalties for Samsung, which discontinued the high-end Note 7 phone in a debacle that wiped $5.4 billion (£4.3bn) from its operating profit. As well as introducing more scrutiny for manufacturers on the whole, the government said it will monitor Samsung's safety procedures closely.
Samsung last month delayed the release of its upcoming Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone following an internal investigation and said "the lessons of this incident are deeply reflected in our culture and process".

Why the Galaxy Note 7 kept exploding - Samsung reveals REAL reason behind smartphone fires
SAMSUNG'S Galaxy Note 7 is now consigned to the history books and the Korean firm has today revealed what caused the damaging fires.

After months of testing, Samsung has finally revealed what caused its flagship Galaxy Note 7 to catch fire.
At a press conference the Korean firm said that two separate faults with the battery were the cause of the issues that saw some devices overheat and explode.
Errors both in design and manufacturing affected batteries by two different manufacturers.
Speaking about the problems, that forced Samsung to recall the smartphone, the company said: "Throughout the last several months, Samsung has invested all of our efforts and substantial resources to finding the cause of the Galaxy Note7 incidents.
"Our investigation examined every aspect of the Galaxy Note7 including hardware and software, and related processes, such as assembly, quality assurance testing, and logistics.
"Through a large-scale testing facility where approximately 700 Samsung researchers and engineers replicated the incidents by testing more than 200,000 fully-assembled devices and more than 30,000 batteries, Samsung finally concluded the cause of the issues.
"In addition to our own investigation into these incidents, we also retained independent industry expert organisations, including UL, Exponent and TUV Rheinland, to provide objective, unbiased analysis.
"Our investigation, as well as the investigations completed by three independent industry organisations, concluded that the batteries were found to be the cause of the Note7 incidents.
'Nonetheless, we provided the target for the battery specifications for the innovative Note7, and we are taking responsibility for our failure to ultimately identify and verify the issues arising out of battery design and manufacturing process prior to the launch of the Note7."
Samsung now says it has put in place multi-layer safety measures protocol at the product planning stage, and an 8-Point Battery Safety Check.
The Note 7 recall is thought to have cost Samsung over $5bn (£4bn) and was hugely damaging for the South Korean firm's reputation.
The flagship device was mean't to take on the might of Apple's iPhone 7 which launched in September.

Samsung issues a recall on their phones because the batteries explode. Could cost the company around a billion dollars.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/16/business/samsung-galaxy-note-recall.html?_r=0
The constant reminders of potential combustibility have further dented Samsung’s reputation and shaved as much as $14 billion off its market value, just when it looked to be gaining ground on Apple, its longtime rival, with its new line of sleek Galaxy smartphones. They also raise questions about whether Samsung’s rush to take back the phones created more problems
Sounds like a plan that just might work.
Let's keep dropping, so I can get some cheapies during these issues samsung is having.
The move follows a Thursday warning from the Federal Aviation Administration saying the phones shouldn’t be used on planes “in light of recent incidents and concerns.”
Samsung is withholding info from its shareholders. IMO

"Samsung Just Got Fined $340,000 for Paying People to Bash HTC Online
Sometimes companies do stupid things to market their products. A silly commercial here. A ridiculous junket there. That's all fine and good, but sometimes companies overdo it, companies like Samsung who just got slapped with a $340,000 fine in Taiwan for illegally paying people to trash talk HTC in forums.
The fine comes after Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) opened an investigation into Samsung's marketing practice last April. The commission was specifically looking into allegations that Samsung had used a "large number of hired writers and designated employees" to "highlight the shortcomings of competing products," products that all happened to have HTC's logo on them. Those allegations turned out to be true—Samsung even admitted it—and now the company has to pay.
What's worse than Samsung's brazen astroturfing is the fact that they can't stop doing it. It's only been a few weeks since Samsung was caught bribing people to talking up their developer competition in online forums. You'd think the company would have learned from their constant patent trolling that dirty tricks don't work. [AP]
Not quite the Galaxy presentation the Street was hoping for. Healthy correction nonetheless.
$1500 nice round #.. She's been churning here.. Will $ssnlf ever dip again!???
Best bid indication is now over current stock price. $aapl still in no man's land.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SSNLF), the South Korean conglomerate, has managed to capture a good share of the global markets
with its products and is often referred to Apple’s archrival. The company ranks seventh on the list of the world’s most valuable brands thanks its success in the electronics business and word of technology.
While Samsung is a hugely popular brand, holding its shares has never been easy for U.S. investors. We take a look at the latest developments at Samsung as well as understand the best ways to invest in it.
Flexible Smartphones
Samsung’s foldable smartphone – which has been in news for a while - should be reality soon. The hybrid product, dubbed as “smartlet,”
will be a 5-inch smartphone that unfolds to turn into a 7-inch tablet. According to Korea’s news site ETNews, Samsung is targeting a 2017 release of the smartlet.
Samsung’s patent application publication shows not just the foldable smartphone, but also a scrollable and bendable smartphone designs.
However, there is no news on the release or production of the other smartphone options as of now.
The smartphone market is flooded with regular smartphones and may be over-saturated. Because of this,
there is the potential that a new-concept product like smartlet can create momentum.
Artificial Intelligence
Samsung understands that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to be mainstream soon, and has looked to invest in AI companies,
such as Vicarious Systems, Reactor Labs, Maluuba, Idibon, Automated Insights, Winston and Expect Labs (recently renamed MindMeld).
According to a report by CB Insights, Samsung Venture Investment ranked fourth in size among global firms, which have made investments in AI start-ups in the last five years (2010-2015).
“Artificial intelligence will make things we do on smartphones much more convenient.
Your well-trained phone will bring about a huge customer loyalty” said Rhee In Jong, EVP, Head of R&D, Software and Services at Samsung Electronics Mobile Business Division.
Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality (VR) is another buzzword in the tech world. Samsung’s Gear VR is already available and is powered by Oculus,
and works seamlessly with its smartphones (Galaxy S7|S7 edge, Note5, S6 and S6 edge).
According to a report by IDC, the shipment of Virtual Reality (VR) hardware will witness a surge in 2016 primarily led by products from Sony,
Samsung, HTC and Oculus, with total volumes touching 9.6 million, generating a revenue of approximately $2.3 billion.
It further predicts that the growth of VR hardware is likely to reach 64.8 million by 2020, recording a 183.8% growth (CAGR, 2016-2020)
while the volume of augmented reality hardware should increase from the present 0.4 million to 45.6 million by 2020 growing at 189.8%
(CAGR, 2016-2020). Samsung believes that “VR will become the future of how we engage with media.”
Samsung Pay
To accelerate the adoption of its mobile payment service, Samsung Pay has teamed up with Verifone (PAY).
The partnership will help encourage further adoption by merchants and consumers. Samsung Pay, which is currently available in the
U.S., South Korea and China, is likely to be rolled out in Singapore during the second quarter 2016.

The following options are available to U.S. investors:
Final Word
While Samsung’s products are endorsed in the U.S.,
