3 Stocks TITN BBBY JPM Reporting Earnings This Week http://stks.co/aPvr And How To Play Them
Apr 9 2013, 13:50 by: Money Investor | includes: BBBY, JPM, TITN
The NCAA March Madness may have officially ended, but a new kind of madness is about to begin. The first quarter earnings season kicked off this week with Alcoa (AA) reporting earnings on 4/8. This earnings season will be as, or more revealing, than any in recent memory with regards to the direction the market moves next. Since the last earnings season, we have had the potential effects of the payroll tax hike, sequester and job furloughs, along with economic and geopolitical drama such as that seen in Cyprus and North Korea respectively. Taken together, the results provided by various companies will provide valuable insight into the outlook for the economy and where the market might head next. Continue reading for companies reporting earnings this week and what to watch for in each report and the potential read through into the broader economy that each of these companies will tell us.
Titan Machinery (TITN)
Titan reports earnings on Wednesday, April 10th before the market opens. This agricultural and construction equipment dealer is prone to see significant volatility post earnings. With the downbeat outlook provided by Caterpillar (CAT) recently, Titan is down almost 20% from a high of $32 per share in February as it currently trades at about $26. However, Titan is pretty much a pure play on the United States, whereas Caterpillar has more exposure to the economic troubles in Europe as well as the mixed outlook coming from the Asia Pacific region.
Titan is still very much a growth story in the sector as its revenue has exploded from $425M in 2008 to about $1.6B in 2012. The company continues to grow organically and through acquisitions by snapping up small equipment dealerships around the country. The company currently trades at about 12x its forward earnings estimates of $2.19 per share (per Yahoo! Finance). The company has a solid balance sheet with ample cash to offset the debt being used to finance its growth.
I think this stock is likely to jump on an earnings report that is not as ugly as the price action recently would lead you to believe. For those wanting exposure to this company, I would recommend buying the stock outright and selling the June $25 calls for $2.70 against the stock being owned. At a current price of roughly $26 a share, you have downside protection to $23.30 in the event the stock were to sell off after earnings. The 52- week low for the stock is $19.07 a share. On the flip side, if the stock takes off after earnings you will most likely have your shares called away or be able to repurchase the call options for a solid gain. Were the stock to remain higher than $25 a share prior to the expiration of the June options the return on this trade would be about 7%. This return would be earned in just over 2 months and would equate to an annualized return of 42%.
Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY)
Bed Bath & Beyond reports earnings after the market close this Wednesday, April 10th. Consensus estimates from Yahoo! Finance call for revenue of $3.39B and earnings per share of $1.68. The last three earnings reports from the company have spurred significant sell-offs as the results and forward guidance have been softer than the market anticipated. The chart below shows a concerning pattern that is again playing out ahead of the upcoming quarterly earnings. Going back to the FY2013 Q1 earnings release in June of 2012 a similar pattern has played out over the last 3 earnings releases. A major sell-off post earnings followed by the stock climbing into the next earnings release, only to rinse and repeat the sell-off. Heading into FY2013 Q4 earnings the stock has performed exactly as it had leading up to the last 3 earnings reports. The stock has rallied over 15% since in the last 45 days and trades at about $64 a share.
The key items to look at in this earnings report will be as follows:
Has the company's gross margin % stabilized? A big fear from analysts and investors alike is that the company will have to sacrifice profitability in order to fend off Amazon (AMZN) and other competitors.
What does revenue growth for the current quarter and the guidance say about the housing recovery? Industry peers in the home furnishings sector have generally reported good results, such as Williams-Sonoma (WSM) recently. Bed Bath & Beyond recently has moved up on expectations that it should see the benefits as well from the perceived housing recovery.
Same-store sales guidance will also be key. If the company guides for same-stores sales % growth of under 3%, this should be a warning sign to investors.
How does the company intend to utilize its cash balance? The company ended the last quarter with close to $800M in cash on the balance sheet. That number should grow to close to $1B after the crucial holiday quarter. It currently pays no dividend and surprised at least some analysts who were calling for the company to issue a special dividend at the end of 2012 prior to the dividend tax rate increasing. It will be a bullish sign if the company continues to buy back shares in a significant manner
My outlook on the earnings. I am bullish on the long-term story for Bed Bath & Beyond and the growth opportunities it can tap. However, the price action concerns me as it is eerily similar to the price action preceding the last few quarters of disappointing earnings. As I would not mind owning Bed Bath & Beyond long term, I am selling the August $55 put options for a premium of $1.25. This will yield 2.3% if the stock is above $55 when the options expire. The annual yield for this trade is about 6.8%.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM)
JPMorgan reports earnings this Friday, April 12th before the market opens. As one of the largest U.S. banks with global operations, the results of JPMorgan provide more than just an outlook into the prospects of the banking industry. Additionally, Jamie Dimon the company chairman and CEO, is not one to mince words and will most likely give an even keeled assessment of what is actually happening domestically and abroad with regard to the economic recovery. Key themes to watch for in the JPMorgan earnings release:
Loan growth. I actually believe the mortgage originations are not even worth focusing on at this point. There is too much noise in the housing market between record low interest rates, government refinance programs, and a general bounce off of the bottom for mortgage lending to provide any true insight into the economic recovery. The real item to focus on will be commercial lending growth. Are companies ramping up their borrowing to grow their businesses. If this number disappoints, it will be an ominous read through into the economic outlook.
Composition of earnings. Is the bank growing earnings from cost cutting, lowering loan loss reserves, and through other unsustainable levers? Alternatively, are earnings showing organic growth through increased lending and increased capital markets activity?
Jamie Dimon. Does Mr. Dimon continue to sound the all clear on the economy? On the other hand, does he take a more cautious tone in light of the recent events in Cyprus and the risk of the entire European Union seeing any spillover effect. He also may opine on the impact of the Federal Reserve's QE program, in addition to monetary policies recently enacted by the Bank of Japan. The correlation to the results for JPMorgan simply has to do with how companies perceive the unprecedented monetary action by central banks around the world and whether or not it is actually spurring growth.
Quite frankly I would advise sitting this one out with regards to investing in JPMorgan before earnings if you do not already have a position. There is a reason that a big bank such as JPMorgan is trading at less than 9x forward earnings estimates with a dividend yield currently over 3%. There are too many unknowns, with regards to bank regulations and the interconnected global economy, to fully understand the risk associated with owning a big bank such as JPMorgan. This could end up being a great investment, but my investing belief is that if the unknowns outweigh the knowns, stay away.
The High Cost Of Shorting Tesla Motors
Apr 1 2013, 07:23 by: Forward Looking Guru | about: TSLA
As I mentioned in my article, Tesla Motors: A Perfect Hedge, betting against Tesla Motors (TSLA) is a bad idea. I suspect anyone who shorted Tesla, who is not hedged, is about to experience the "Tsunami of pain" that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised is coming for them. I have received a number of questions about recent Tesla events, with some people asking if I think the squeeze is coming. As I mentioned in my last article, I don't think a monster squeeze will happen, since the shorts are likely hedged. However, recent events have me suspecting that we should be prepared for prolonged bullish momentum that could begin as early as this week.
Motor Trend Car of the Year and World Green Car of the Year
The Tesla Model S is the first electric car to be awarded the Motor Trend Car of the Year and is the only car to receive the award by unanimous decision. Furthermore, it was announced on March 28 that the Model S has also been named World Green Car of the Year. Receiving these awards has historically had a very positive effect on demand. Tesla has only just begun to expand into Europe and Asia, so worldwide demand can go much higher from here, once consumers learn about the Model S, and have had the opportunity to drive it. Currently, global demand for the Model S is approximately 70 reservations per day (RPD), implying annual demand of approximately 25,000 per year. By receiving the World Car of the Year Award, Tesla has been acknowledged as a company with good products and global force to be reckoned with, besting major European names such as Mercedes and Volkswagen. European luxury car owners are sure to take notice. Elon Musk has stated that he expects demand to be about equal among Europe, Asia and North America. Demand from the United States is currently approximately 50 RPD. This number is an average. At certain points last year, following major announcements, demand for the Model S jumped to 100-150 per day. If Tesla can achieve demand of 150 (RPD), it will sell 54,750 Model S annually. If Tesla achieves demand of 54,750, and the ASP of the Model S is $75,000, Tesla could be deserving of a $35 billion market cap with a PE of 40 when you do the math: 54,750 x $75,000 x .25 = $1,026,562,500 + (10,000 x 54,750) = $1,574,062,500 - $400 million CAPEX - 20% tax rate = $880 million profit x P/E 40 = $35,200,000,000
I suspect the World Car of the Year award, coupled with an announced expansion of the Supercharge network would be a huge deal for the stock. Tesla has stated that it plans to announce these things in 2013. If they occur at the same time, I am confident investors will take notice.
Tesla is Hiring
Evidently Tesla sees what I see. They are hiring rapidly and, because of increased demand, are probably working on tooling the factory for a higher production rate. A quick look on indeed.com reveals that Tesla made 300 job postings for jobs ranging from engineers to accountants, to legal. It seems Tesla plans to increase its current work force of 3,000 people by almost 10% in the coming month. This should not come as a surprise, since Tesla has announced it plans to open 25 new showrooms in 2013, and has stated it plans to offer additional variants of the Model S that would lead to increased demand, beginning in early 2013. These postings suggest to me that Tesla doesn't plan on going away any time soon. Rather, it demonstrates the signs of a company preparing for an expansion of its operations.
Cost to Short Tesla
The cost to borrow shares of Tesla has skyrocketed to 85% from 40% earlier this month. This implies that demand for shares to short has far exceeded the supply, and that anyone currently short is paying a fortune to remain short. It seems Elon Musk was right when he posited that short interest had reached a peak. I suspect the closer we get to "Game Changing" announcements, such as demand reaching 30,000-40,000 units in 2013, or a massive expansion of the Supercharge Network that will be funded entirely by Elon's personal wealth, the higher the short interest will go. Elon Musk has told the world to prepare for an announcement that is sure to be a game changer, stating "Really exciting @TeslaMotors announcement coming on Thursday. Am going to put my money where my mouth is in very major way." Could this imply that he is preparing to make a game changing announcement next week? If Elon Musk announces any of the above things, it would be a very big deal, that no-one is expecting.
Conclusion
If Tesla can achieve demand of 30,000 - 40,000 per year, as Elon has mentioned he suspects it will, and is able to produce on the 25% gross margins he has promised, the stock is dirt cheap at $38, with a $4 billion market cap. I suspect many people have bought July - October calls, with the expectation that the stock will be much higher. These options will increase by over 1000 percent if the stock doubles. Shorting Tesla, if unhedged is a bad idea today. Last night Tesla announced that it has delivered over 10,000 Model S globally, is raising guidance, and is expecting to be profitable in Q1. This major event, coupled with a major announcement on Tuesday, such as Elon confirming that demand is currently already at 100 RPD, or if Elon announces that he is prepared to fund a massive expansion of the Supercharge network, could cause the stock to double by the end of this week.

On GPS Sunday: King Abdullah, Mukesh Ambani, Howard and Medvedev
http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2013/03/30/on-gps-sunday-king-abdullah-ambani-howard-and-medvedev/
"Fareed Zakaria GPS," Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN
This week, GPS highlights some of the most memorable interviews so far this year.
First, Fareed speaks with Jordan's King Abdullah about the state of the Arab Spring, and his own country's evolution towards democracy.
“We’re still living in the shadows of the Cold War. And during the Cold War, it was more sort of, let’s say, the monarchies that were allied to the West and the republics that were allied to the Soviet Union. And so maybe you've seen the reaction more in the republics than you've had in sort of the countries that are either emirates or monarchies. But this is what makes maybe the transition to political reform even more difficult.”
Then, India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, on India's road ahead – and why he's bullish on America.
“There has been a fundamental transformation in the energy scene in the US. For many decades, we’ve heard that the U.S. will be independent of foreign imports of energy. Realistically, I can now tell you that it is my judgment that this will happen in the next five or seven years. The U.S. has truly found non-conventional energy in shale oil and gas which is really, really bringing benefit not only to the population in the U.S., but across the world."
Next, the story of a country that responded to gun violence with an assault weapons ban: Fareed’s 1-on-1 with former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
“We funded, with a one-off tax levy on everybody, the buy-back of something like 700,000 guns. The American equivalent of that would be 40 million weapons. And that was implemented over a period of time. And they were taken in by the police. And I have to say, the Australian experience overwhelmingly was of strong support. And, again, I emphasize, it came from both sides of politics.”
And finally, Fareed speaks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev about his job swap with President Putin.

Google falls as two analysts disagree in new notes
Google (GOOG) is retreating after two research firms expressed different views about the company's outlook in notes to clients earlier today.
BULLISH TAKE: Google will benefit financially from its new Enhanced Campaigns program, Credit Suisse believes. Enhanced Campaigns enables marketers to manage campaigns across different devices and deliver their ads to the right device at the right time, according to Google. The program is likely to cause marketers' search ad budgets to increase one percentage point in 2013 and three percentage points in 2014, Credit Suisse estimated. Enhanced Campaigns will cause more consumers to surf on the mobile Internet, rather than use apps, the note contended. That change will increase the amount of ad dollars that Google can earn, predicted the firm, which increased its price target on Google to $982 from $847 and reiterated an Outperform rating on the stock.
BEARISH TAKE: Conversely, Stifel analyst Jordan Rohan slightly lowered his estimates for Google and predicted that it would report weaker than expected first quarter results. Search engine marketing firm IgnitionOne believes that spending on Google's search engine dropped 1% in the first quarter of the year, versus the same period in 2012, Rohan reported. Google's stock may be volatile as the Street debates how the company's first quarter earnings will look, added the analyst, who maintained a Hold rating on the shares. TODAY'S PRICE ACTION: In mid-afternoon
Chicago Fed dove Evans sees current pace of QE through year-end
Chicago Fed dove Evans sees current pace of QE through year-end as most likely, with Fed policies working as well as they can for now. QE3 success is not a reason to do less, since low inflation suggests policy is too tight, though the Fed could taper asset purchases if jobs growth was very strong and the Fed more confident in the outlook. He wants to be sure any QE reduction is not perceived as premature or weak-kneed. Evans is looking for 2.5-3.5% growth ahead, unemployment at 7% by end-2014 and inflation not a worry for the foreseeable future. He sees QE3 outweighing the costs by a wide margin, and appropriate until jobless rate below 6.0% assuming inflation is still tame. Inflation rises above 2% when the jobless rate hits 6.5%, then a hike would be expected before long. Overall, this is fairly dovish as expected, with a couple very qualified more hawkish references
Earnings Preview: BlackBerry shares up more than 30% ahead of Q4 report
BlackBerry (BBRY) is scheduled to report Q4 earnings before the market open on Thursday, March 28, with a conference call scheduled for 8:00 am ET. BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion, is a wireless solutions provider and manufactures the BlackBerry smartphone and operating system. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for EPS of (30c) on revenue of $2.83B, according to Bloomberg. The consensus range for EPS is (8c)-(78c) on revenue of $2.41B-$3.28B. Total smartphone shipments are expected to be around 6.95M, with BlackBerry 10 shipments expected to be around 1.1M. A Wall Street Journal report, citing data from Markit, earlier today said between the Canadian and New York exchange listings of Blackberry shares, current short interest in BlackBerry stands at about 30%, a near record high for the stock.
LAST QUARTER: BlackBerry's Q3 results saw EPS of (22c) against estimates for (35c) on revenue of $2.7B against estimates for $2.66B. In its Q3 earnings report, BlackBerry reported it had 79M users and said it expected continued pressure on operating results in Q4 as it prepared for the launch of BlackBerry 10, which was announced on January 30. At its January 30 event, BlackBerry announced it would launch two BB10 devices, the touchscreen Z10, and the Q10 with a physical keyboard. The Z10 was made available in Canada beginning February 5, and AT&T (T) began selling the device in the U.S. on March 22. On March 13, BlackBerry announced that a partner purchased 1M BB10 smartphones, and an AllThingsD report later said the order was placed by Brightstar. At its January 30 announcement for BlackBerry 10, the company, which had been known as Research in Motion, announced it was changing its name to BlackBerry and would trade under the ticker "BBRY" effective February 4. STREET RESEARCH: Street research has been mixed on BlackBerry since its Q3 report, with shares receiving a downgrade to Sell from Underperform at CLSA the day after its Q3 report. BlackBerry shares ran higher in January, ahead of the company's BlackBerry 10 announcement, and a number of firms upgraded the stock and increased their price target on the stock. Following the announcement of BlackBerry 10, the stock was downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Evercore, and to Underperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse. Ahead of BB10's launch in Canada, Bernstein upgraded shares to Outperform from Market Perform with a $22 price target, and after the launch, Wells Fargo upgraded shares to Outperform from Market Perform with a price target range of $19-$20 per share. Last week, shares were upgraded two notches, to Overweight from Underweight, at Morgan Stanley with a $22 price target.
PRICE ACTION: BlackBerry shares have gained over $3.40, or more than 31% since the first day of trading following its Q3 report, with shares closing as high as $17.90 on January 22, and as low as $10.61 on December 24. BlackBerry shares have lost about $1.65, or a little more than 10% since Friday's U.S. launch of the Z10, as analysts have been split on whether the launch was a success. Shares of BlackBerry are up about 1% in afternoon trading ahead of tomorrows Q4 report. :theflyonthewall.com

Big Week Looming For Insurance ETFs

Exchange traded funds tracking insurance providers are often overshadowed by more popular financial services fare, namely those ETFs that are home to major bank stocks.
That scenario could change this week as a plethora of big-name insurance firms step into the earnings confessional, perhaps shifting investors' attention to select insurance ETFs in the process.
Health insurance provider Humana (NYSE: HUM) reported earlier today, but that is just the beginning of what is shaping up to be a brisk week of earnings reports from a variety of insurance providers.
Humana is a top-10 holding in the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Healthcare Providers Index Fund (NYSE: IHF), a $242.1 million ETF that prior to Monday, was 5.8 percent year-to-date.
Over the course of the week, other IHF constituents such as Cigna (NYSE: CI) and Coventry Health Care (NYSE: CVH) report as well. Add those two with Humana and by the time this week is over, 13.5 percent of IHF's weight will have delivered earnings updates.
What will prove pivotal to the ETF's near-term fortunes is the guidance, if any, given by these companies.
Some analysts see double-digit EPS growth for the health insurance sub-sector this year. If IHF constituents can comfort investors that that growth is realistic, the ETF could be a viable buy-on-the-dip candidate.
The thinly-traded (average daily volume of less than 800 shares) PowerShares KBW Property & Casualty Insurance Portfolio (NYSE: KBWP) will be another insurance ETF worth checking in with as the week moves along. AXIS Capital Holdings (NYSE: AXS), which represents 4.16 percent of the ETF's weight, reported results today.
Allstate (NYSE: ALL) and PartnerRe (NYSE: PRE), which combine for 12.6 of KBWP's weight, report on Wednesday.
Other KBWP holdings scheduled to report later this include Endurance Specialty Holdings (NYSE: ENH), Platinum Underwriters (NYSE: PTP), Kemper (NYSE: KMPR) and Montpelier Re (NYSE: MRH). That quarter combines for over 13 percent of KBWP's weight.
With $173.63 million in assets under management, the SPDR S&P Insurance ETF (NYSE: KIE) is one of the largest non-health insurance ETFs.
Home to 46 stocks, the ETF has jumped almost seven percent in the past month and is now found bumping up against some stiff resistance at $48.
No single holding receives an allocation of more than 2.76 in KIE, but plenty of the fund's marquee names report throughout February. Hartford Financial (NYSE: HIG) reports after the bell today, Prudential (NYSE: PRU) follows on Wednesday as does Allstate.
Genworth (NYSE: GNW), KIE's largest holding, reports on Tuesday.
Bottom line: With over 10 percent of KIE's weight delivering earnings reports over the next three days and some of the ETF's most recognizable names reporting later this month, investors should know soon whether the fund has the chops to break resistance at $48 and start a new up leg.

FB earnings redux from last oct was all about the mobile
Facebook (FB) Earnings Report: Zuckerberg Thumbs His Nose at These Experts (YHOO, GOOG & ZNGA)
A recap of what the”experts” said about the Facebook’s (NASDAQ: FB) earnings report before it what announced.
Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) reported earnings after the market closed yesterday and to the surprise of nearly everyone (including myself), it seems to be doing better than what all of us so-called experts have expected – especially in the mobile advertising space where Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) are facing challenges but as I wrote yesterday (See: Facebook’s (FB) Biggest Problem? I Just Don’t Use It That Much (YHOO, GOOG & ZNGA)), there are still reasons not to hit the “like” button on its stock.
To quickly recap what was in the Facebook Inc earnings report, it reported a 32% sales rise to $1.26 billion (the growth rate matched that of the second quarter and snapped a streak of slowing sales rate increases) while advertising revenue rose 36% to $1.09 billion (verses 28% growth in the second quarter) and revenue from payments and other businesses rose 13% to $176 million. More importantly, mobile ad revenues totaled roughly $150 million – much better than the estimated $40 million to $50 million for the second quarter and almost nothing for the first. In fact, Mark Zuckerberg said during the conference call that the mobile opportunity was "the most misunderstood" aspect of Facebook's business and that the company may end up making more money from mobile ads than from PC ones.
With that in mind, what were the so-called Wall Street experts saying before Facebook reported earnings? Here is a quick recap of what to help you decide who to listen to moving forward:
•Sterne Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia had predicted that only 5% of Facebook’s advertising sales would come from mobile. He was later quoted as saying that Facebook has a “long way to go to prove that this is sustainable” but he also noted just how quickly things can move.
•Wedge Partners’s Martin Pyykkonen had gone on CNBC to say that he expected earnings to clock in above consensus because of mobile. He also pointed out that you can get higher rates on a tablet that are closer to the levels achieved on a desktop.
•Citi’s Mark Mahaney was expecting revenue growth to fall to 23% with revenue somewhere in the range of $986 million.
•Michael Pachter with Wedbush Securities wasn’t optimistic because in the view of his firm, recent Zynga (NASDAQ: ZNGA) releases hurt monetization of previously “evergreen” franchises as users end up spending more time on new games but less of their money. Hence, he assumed a drop in Zynga game spending would hit Facebook’s bottom line with some potential for payments gains from other game vendors.
•JP Morgan Chase analyst Doug Anmuth had stated that they remain bullish on Facebook and believe advertising revenue can re-accelerate.
•Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson had written a research note on Monday to say that they were not concerned about headline numbers and that he expected revenue growth to accelerate. He also gave Facebook a $19 price target.
•Barron's Associate Editor Andrew Bary appeared in a Barron’s video to say that investors should stay away from Facebook's stock because the transition to mobile and a generational shift in users has impacted its advertising revenue.
I should note that Facebook had said it crossed the 1 billion threshold for monthly active users by the end of last month and that 604 million of them were mobile users. On the other hand and as I noted yesterday, I don’t spend anywhere near as much time on Facebook as I do on Yahoo! and on Google to a lesser extent as their sites are more useful (e.g. email, search, news, weather reports etc.). Hence, I have to wonder if Facebook is not a mile wide but only an inch deep. On the other hand and even if most of the 1 billion Facebook users are like me and spend less than 30 minutes a month on their accounts, that’s still a great platform to add other and more sticky services to besides newsfeeds about friends and games but I am still not going out a hitting the “like” button on Facebook (FB) stock.

U.S. retail sales undershot assumptions in November
U.S. retail sales undershot assumptions in November due entirely to an outsized drop in gasoline sales that is likely price-related, alongside a remaining mix of retail sales figures that slightly beat assumptions. Analysts also saw modest downward back-revisions that still show an October Sandy-hit to auto and building material sales that was reversed, following solid price-fed headline gains through Q3 that included a September boost to electronics and appliance store sales from the iphone. Analysts still expect a Q3 GDP growth boost to 2.9% from 2.7%, to be followed by 1.2% growth in Q4, though today's data imply a $1 B downward Q3 real consumption revision that would leave an unrevised 1.4% real growth rate. Analysts still expect a 1.4% real growth clip in Q4. For other Q3 revisions, analysts expect a $5 B boost in net exports, a $4 B boost in construction, and a $1 B trimming in inventories. Analysts assume a 0.5% November nominal and real PCE gain that more than reverses respective October declines of 0.2% and 0.3%. Analysts expect a flat November PCE chain price figure that matches our estimate for tomorrow's reported CPI gain, following 0.1% increases for both in October

PTJ is not only a successful hedge fund manager and philanthropist, but also very original and clear thinker. Here are some of his best market-related insights:
1. Markets have consistently experienced “100-year events” every five years. While I spend a significant amount of my time on analytics and collecting fundamental information, at the end of the day, I am a slave to the tape and proud of it.
2. I see the younger generation hampered by the need to understand and rationalize why something should go up or down. Usually, by the time that becomes self-evident, the move is already over.
3. When I got into the business, there was so little information on fundamentals, and what little information one could get was largely imperfect. We learned just to go with the chart. Why work when Mr. Market can do it for you?
4. These days, there are many more deep intellectuals in the business, and that, coupled with the explosion of information on the Internet, creates an illusion that there is an explanation for everything and that the primary tast is simply to find that explanation. As a result, technical analysis is at the bottom of the study list for many of the younger generation, particularly since the skill often requires them to close their eyes and trust price action. The pain of gain is just too overwhelming to bear.
5. There is no training — classroom or otherwise — that can prepare for trading the last third of a move, whether it’s the end of a bull market or the end of a bear market. There’s typically no logic to it; irrationality reigns supreme, and no class can teach what to do during that brief, volatile reign. The only way to learn how to trade during that last, exquisite third of a move is to do it, or, more precisely, live it.
6. Fundamentals might be good for the first third or first 50 or 60 percent of a move, but the last third of a great bull market is typically a blow-off, whereas the mania runs wild and prices go parabolic.
7. That cotton trade was almost the deal breaker for me. It was at that point that I said, ‘Mr. Stupid, why risk everything on one trade? Why not make your life a pursuit of happiness rather than pain?’
8. If I have positions going against me, I get right out; if they are going for me, I keep them… Risk control is the most important thing in trading. If you have a losing position that is making you uncomfortable, the solution is very simple: Get out, because you can always get back in.
9. Losers average down losers
10. The concept of paying one-hundred-and-something times earnings for any company for me is just anathema. Having said that, at the end of the day, your job is to buy what goes up and to sell what goes down so really who gives a damn about PE’s?
11. The normal progression of most traders that I’ve seen is that the older they get something happens. Sometimes they get more successful and therefore they take less risk. That’s something that as a company we literally sit and work with. That’s certainly something that I’ve had to come to grips with in particular over the past 12 to 18 months. You have to actively manage against your natural tendency to become more conservative. You do that because all of a sudden you become successful and don’t want to lose what you have and/or in my case you get married and have children and naturally, consciously or subconsciously, you become more conservative.
12. I look for opportunities with tremendously skewed reward-risk opportunities. Don’t ever let them get into your pocket – that means there’s no reason to leverage substantially. There’s no reason to take substantial amounts of financial risk ever, because you should always be able to find something where you can skew the reward risk relationship so greatly in your favor that you can take a variety of small investments with great reward risk opportunities that should give you minimum draw down pain and maximum upside opportunities.
13. I believe the very best money is made at the market turns. Everyone says you get killed trying to pick tops and bottoms and you make all your money by playing the trend in the middle. Well for twelve years I have been missing the meat in the middle but I have made a lot of money at tops and bottoms.

Recession Risk: The Threat Of Rising Interest Rates
December 8, 2012 by: James A. Kostohryz
When it comes to evaluating the danger that rising interest rates could potentially have on the US economy, analysts are currently arrayed into two diametrically opposed camps: Fed-induced complacency versus debt-driven pessimism.
1. Fed-induced complacency. Why should Americans worry? The Fed has guaranteed low interest rates at least through the middle of 2015, and perhaps beyond.
2. Debt-driven pessimism. Given the astronomical rise in overall US debt levels in recent years, Americans should worry because if interest rates merely go back up to "normal" levels, the US public and private debt burden will explode. Indeed, a mere "normalization" of interest rates could jeopardize the current economic recovery.
In many ways, I believe both positions are wrong - not because they are extreme, but because they are focusing on the wrong issues.
Why Fed-Induced Complacency Is Wrong
The reason why Fed-induced complacency is wrong is very simple: The Fed does not ultimately control interest rates in the US. To understand why the Fed does not ultimately control interest rates, it is helpful to understand the two main ways that the Fed can influence them under certain circumstances.
1. Fed funds. The Fed controls an interest rate called the Fed Funds rate, which is a short-term interest rate. This is a short-term interest rate that banks can fund themselves (i.e. borrow money from the Fed) and it represents a miniscule portion of the overall credit market. Nevertheless, this interest rate tends to influence short-term interest rates throughout the economy for reasons that cannot be fully expounded on here. By contrast, the Fed Funds rate has relatively little impact on medium and longer-term interest rates. Indeed, it could be credibly argued that long-term market interest rates influence the Fed Funds rate more than vice-versa. Why?
The Fed Funds rate places no restriction whatsoever on the short or long-term interest rates credit providers charge to their customers. Banks and other credit providers are free to change whatever interest rates the market for credit can bear. Thus, for example, if the demand for credit surges due to robust economic growth, banks can charge higher interest rates (despite funding themselves via the low Fed Funds rate). Additionally, if inflation rises, credit providers will charge more for credit regardless of what the Fed Funds rate is, because they know that the money they will be paid back with in the future will be devalued by said inflation and/or because they expect funding costs in the future to rise. Long-term interest rates will be especially sensitive to inflation expectations. Indeed, long-term interest rates can spike if market participants perceive that the Fed Funds rate is excessively low.
2. Quantitative Easing (QE): The Fed can "create" money and use it to purchase debt securities on the secondary market, thereby placing upward pressure on the prices of such securities and downward pressure on their yields. However, the Fed's power to influence interest rates in this way is, in practice, extremely limited. First, the size of the Fed's balance sheet is utterly insignificant in relation to the total global market for US dollar denominated credit. This means that the Fed - via money supply measures such as QE - is powerless to prevent interest rate increases that stem from major shifts in the demand for US dollar-denominated debt securities. Second, there are practical limits to how much the Fed can engage in QE without defeating its own purposes. At a certain point, expansion of the Fed balance sheet (to counteract declining demand for US dollar denominated debt) would trigger a self-defeating vicious cycle whereby asset purchases provoke a rise in inflationary expectations, thereby causing a flood of sales of US Dollar denominated debt securities, which if met by further Fed purchases (i.e. monetary base increases) to repress yields would only trigger even greater increases in inflationary expectations.
The Fed simply cannot successfully contain interest rate rises through the mechanism of QE in a context of accelerating inflationary expectations.
In sum, the widespread notion that the Fed can prevent interest rates from rising at will is false. Regardless of Fed policy or intentions, interest rates will rise significantly if either of two events occur (or both): A) Increased economic growth. B) Rising inflationary expectations. The Fed is essentially powerless to prevent this. Indeed, under such circumstances, the Fed must either rise interest rates itself in response to market forces, or it will lose any marginal influence that it can exert on the process.
Why Debt-Driven Interest Rate Pessimism Is Wrong
Many analysts believe that given high debt levels in the US, rising interest rates would be fatal to the economy.
I think it is beyond question that all things being equal, rising indebtedness in the US in recent decades has made the US economy increasingly vulnerable to rises in interest rates. All things being equal, higher debt means that the economic drag caused by higher debt service increases.
Having said that, many analysts tend to be too pessimistic regarding the ability of the US economy to withstand a normalization of interest rates. For example, let us assume a 200 basis point increase in long-term interest rates as a result of a more robust economic recovery.
1. Public sector debt service. Contrary to popular belief, a 200 basis point rise in long-term interest rates will not cause interest costs or the US deficit to balloon in the short-term. It should be remembered that a large portion of US debt is locked in at historically low interest rates. Furthermore, the debt that does mature can be managed in such as way as to blunt the impact of rising interest rates. For example, maturing long-term high interest debt can always be paid off with financing from low-interest short-term debt.
2. Corporate sector debt service. In terms of the corporate sector, debt is low, liquidity is high, and 200 basis points of higher interest rates would, on aggregate, be unlikely to derail investment projects (including new hiring) spurred by the prospect of a more robust economic recovery. Indeed, the macroeconomic impact of investment projects made unviable by a rise in interest rates would be offset by projects made profitable by the prospect of more robust economic growth.
3. Household debt service. Household consumer credit rates might rise a bit if long-term interest rates rise - although this is far from clear. However, even so, the wider availability of credit sparked by a more robust economic recovery would tend to cancel out any negative macroeconomic impact from rising rates.
The household sector would mainly be negatively impacted by higher long-term interest rates via the rise in variable mortgage rates. While this would be a blow to many households, it is also true that the macroeconomic impact of more robust economic growth via greater employment, rising incomes and greater consumer confidence would largely offset this negative effect. Furthermore, US banks have been doing a very good job of writing off and provisioning for the potential losses in their sub-prime variable-rate portfolios. Thus, the impact in bank balance sheets of rising delinquency in these sectors, while substantial, would not be catastrophic. Indeed, a growing economy would raise asset quality and recovery rates elsewhere in banks' portfolios.
Therefore, while the impact of rising interest rates would not be negligible and will likely act as a restraint on economic growth, it is unlikely that interest rate normalization caused by more robust economic growth, in a context of low inflation, would actually derail the economic expansion.
Inflation Is The Wildcard
Let us review what has been said thus far: Regardless of the Fed's good intentions, interest rates will, in fact, rise if either of two things occur: Faster economic growth and/or rising inflation. On the other hand, it is not likely that an economic expansion will be derailed by a normalization of interest rates caused by an accelerating economy.
Therefore, the main remaining risk factor that could derail an economic recovery via higher interest rates would be rapidly accelerating inflationary expectations. Let us see how such a scenario could play out.
Please note that core inflation (CPI minus food and energy) is currently at around 2.0% -- the level that the Fed has for the past twenty years declared to be the limit of its "comfort zone." Let us assume a substantial acceleration of core inflation towards the 3% range - hardly a far-fetched assumption. This could occur via mechanisms such as internationally priced resource price increases, more robust utilization of resources in certain sectors and dollar weakness in FX markets. What would the Fed do? What could it do?
On the one hand, the Fed has expressed confidence that it can quickly remove excess liquidity from the system. I believe that this is absolutely correct.
On the other hand, it is also true that under conditions of accelerating inflation, such an "exit" would pose extraordinary risks to interest rates and economic stability generally. Why? First, under such circumstances, market interest rates would rise organically in response to rising inflation. Second, credit markets could suffer a "double-whammy" in that simultaneous to the organic rise in interest rates in response to accelerating inflation, the Fed would be virtually obligated to sell securities in their portfolio in order to drain liquidity from the system, thereby exacerbating the rise in interest rates.
Such a sale of Fed securities would simply become the mirror image of QE (which might be dubbed QT for "Quantitative Tightening") and would place upward pressure on interest rates above that which might have arisen organically from an acceleration of inflation under normal conditions.
Thus, the rise of inflation would threaten the economy precisely at a time when the Fed was rendered completely lame to act in a countercyclical fashion. The Fed would be in a lose-lose situation. On the one hand, if the Fed failed to withdraw liquidity from the system in the face of accelerating core inflation (thereby squandering its credibility vis a vis markets), inflationary expectations and interest rates would only accelerate further. On the other hand, if the Fed elects to preserve its commitment to low inflation and therefore withdraws liquidity, this sort of "QT" would actually exacerbate a spike in interest rates. And such a "double whammy" interest rate spike could, in fact, be sufficient to derail an economic recovery in the context of a highly indebted economy.
Conclusion
A normalization of interest rates will not necessarily derail an economic recovery. If interest rates rise in a context of accelerating economic growth and muted inflation, a recession will probably not result.
However, if rising interest rates are the consequence of even modestly accelerating inflation, all bets are off. At that point, the long-dormant so-called "bond vigilantes" (which are nothing more than ordinary investors that sell their bonds to protect themselves against inflation) will take over and the Fed - whose real powers are quite limited - will be forced to bow to the sovereignty of market forces and essentially join the bond vigilantes in orchestrating a rise in interest rates.
Please note that I am not currently predicting an acceleration in inflation. What I am saying is that with core inflation already above a key benchmark that the Fed has staked its credibility on, the risk of interest rate instability is very real. It should be of concern to investors that despite economic growth being so anemic and overall resource utilization being so low (including human resources) there is currently very little margin for error on the inflation front. In such a context, economically sensitive and/or cyclical stocks such as Intel (INTC), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) or Dow (DOW) or index ETFs representing broad stock indices such as (SPY), (DIA) or (QQQ) are vulnerable to significant declines.
The "Fed is Still Trying to Push Down Rates"
The "Fed is Still Trying to Push Down Rates" according to the working headline on WSJ Fedwatcher Hilsenrath's article (subscription) recapping Bernanke's speech yesterday. He emphasized Bernanke's Q&A response that the Fed will "continue to do additional asset purchases, buy MBS, and whatever actions are appropriate" as evidence of this fact that the markets have already taken onboard. He also noted Bernanke's warning that even with a fiscal deal there will be a drag on the economy of some kind. It was also pretty clear that Bernanke remained dissatisfied with the level of the jobless rate, which he thought was 2.0-2.5% higher than need be. Hilsenrath also picked up on the warning that there was little the Fed could do to avoid a recession in the event that Congress failed to make a deal. :

NTAP FFIV fall after Avnet (AVT), issues profit warning which distributes various technology components and products, is dropping after the company reported earlier today that its first quarter earnings per share and revenue would be significantly below analysts' consensus estimates. The company blamed several factors for the shortfall, including better than expected sales in Asia where its profit margins are relatively low, and weaker sales in Western regions where its profit margins are higher. Sales at Avnet's Technology Solutions unit also came in below expectations, the company added. In a note earlier today to investors, research firm Oppenheimer wrote that NetApp's (NTAP) shares could be negatively affected by Avnet's weaker than expected results, as Avnet accounted for about 14% of NetApp's revenue from May-July, Oppenheimer reported. Another key Avnet partner is F5 (FFIV), as Avnet is the largest distributor of F5 products and accounts for 15%-20% of F5's revenue, the firm wrote. Oppenheimer believes that most of the weakness in Avnet's Technology Solutions unit was caused by weak server sales. As a result, the firm thinks that Avnet's weakness could bode badly for IBM (IBM) and HP (HPQ), which are both among the top buyers of Avnet's server solutions, according to the firm. In mid-morning trading, Avnet dropped 5.95% to $26.87, NetApp (NTAP) lost 2.27% to $29.52, F5 dropped 2.62% to $99.41, IBM (IBM) inched down 0.22% to $207.53, and HP gave back 0.21% to $14.34. :
