The inspiration behind the board:
I was laying in Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital with my newly arrived healthy pre-term (28 weeks - just over 2 lbs) baby girl. I was watching the news and saw a story about a young girl, Jessica Bojarski, from here in the Cleveland area. She is a 15 year-old girl who has had two heart transplants and is about to have a third. The story was about a fashion show fund-raiser her classmates had put on to help her family with some of the medical expenses. They were also having a bowling event later that day to raise additional funds. The reporter stated that she has been admitted to the Cleveland Clinic 645 times in her short life – and was about to make it 646. As a father of three girls, I couldn't imagine having to kiss one of my girls goodbye as the surgeons wheel her away.
I can’t imagine how much this family must owe in medical expenses that aren’t covered by their insurance. They shouldn’t have to worry about such things when their daughter is having a heart transplant.
My idea for this board is to try to give a little back. We spend so much time and energy trying to squeeze every last penny out of this market that we sometimes forget what it is really important. I thought I could set up a board where people could post similar stories and information that we might just be able to help give some of these families a little peace of mind. If nothing else, just to let them know we are thinking of them. Some of the best gifts have nothing to do with money.
