The Attard Family Fortune:
Multicom Publishing was founded in 1991 by Tamara and Paul Attard. They formed a partnership with media giant Meredith Corporation, publishing for such notables as Better Homes and Garden and The Home Depot. They went public in the mid-90's through a $7 million IPO but didn't survive the ultra-competitive online publishing environment of the late 90's.
They have reinstated the shell with the state of Washington and filed an annual report in April 2007. One option they are considering is to take a venture of their family-run Bayseng Spice company public. Bayseng recently signed a deal to make wine with Great Wall of China Wines, the top selling wine-maker in China. They may take a second company public along with Bayseng. They are also open to a reverse merger, but they will be selective in looking for a company that fits with their corporate image.

Heavenly Herbs
Spice is the variety for these growers

The next time you season your spaghetti, stew or soup, think about the herbs you use. There's a chance some of them may have originated right outside Vacaville.
In the rugged terrain of Gates Canyon, the Bayseng Spice Co. has been growing bay leaves for decades and is now the world's largest supplier of California bay leaves.
Bayseng, which was formed in 1978, has its headquarters in Orinda but grows some 100,000 bay laurel trees in Gates Canyon.
The resulting leaves are certified organic, said Tamara Attard of Vacaville, a partner with husband, Paul, and her brothers James and Michael Lewis. "You can tell they're ours because ours are fresh - they are bright green and have 10 times the oils as some of the others," she said. "We dry them within 48 hours of harvesting."
Some bay leaves on the market are 2 years old and are sprayed with fumigants after harvesting, she said. "And most of the oil gone. Consumers can actually see and taste the differences."
Gates Canyon is perfect for growing bay laurel trees, Attard said. "The soil is incredibly rich with good drainage. We have a Mediterranean climate - hot afternoons and foggy wet mornings. The Mediterranean climate and the world-renowned soil are ideal for bay leaves."
From Gates Canyon, the harvested leaves are taken to Orinda, where they are dried and packaged using a special vacuuming system created by Jim Lewis. The leaves are then sold to companies such as Spice Islands, a major U.S. client, as well as to marketers in Japan, Europe, Canada and Australia
Now the future looks good, the partners agree. The company expects to enter a major second market soon: a Chinese investment group is interested in growing wine grapes in Gates Canyon for its Great Wall Wine label.
Another goal is to open a Chinese market for their bay leaves, just as the company did in Japan. "It's going over extremely well in Japan," she said. "The Chinese market is much larger."
"We also want to start a campaign in the United States to get more people to buy local, certified organic bay leaves, and to do an outreach program with famous chefs."
Some day soon, professional chefs throughout the country and celebrity chefs on TV's national Food Network may be extolling the virtues of certified organic bay leaves, grown in Vacaville. Already Bayseng is building a new house and an operation base atop Gates Canyon Road. The environmentally friendly 5,000-square-foot home "will be the perfect showcase for the business," Attard said.
