Grant marks first allocation of funds through PERTE program, continued maturation of Spanish project portfolio
SABUGO, Portugal, Feb. 28, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fusion Fuel (NASDAQ: HTOO) is pleased to announce that, Fusion Fuel Spain, has been awarded a grant of €3.3 million towards capital investment in a 2.4 MW green hydrogen project aimed at industrial decarbonization in Spain. The grant has been awarded through the H2 Pioneros Program, to which €150 million had been earmarked to support commercial projects across the renewable hydrogen value chain. H2 Pioneros is one of the first funding calls under the Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (‘PERTE’) program, a €6.9 billion financing tool created under Spain’s recovery and resilience facility to support initiatives in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage. Fusion Fuel’s project is one of only 19 across Spain that were awarded grant financing through H2 Pioneros.
The 2.4 MW project is planned to be developed in Toledo and is intended to supply green hydrogen to local industrial customers to replace the carbon-intensive natural gas currently used in industrial processes. The green hydrogen facility will feature the latest generation of Fusion Fuel’s HEVO solution and is expected to produce roughly 110 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per annum. The €3.3 million subsidy represents approximately 57% of the total estimated capital cost of the project, which the company expects to build and commission during 2024.
Frederico Chaves, Co-Head of Fusion Fuel, commented on the award, “This is an important milestone for Fusion Fuel and our partner in Fusion Fuel Spain, as it represents the first allocation of PERTE funds in Spain, within an extremely competitive process with 129 projects evaluated. Our project in Toledo now joins an ever-growing list of green hydrogen projects in Spain. With the land already secured, we hope to mobilize quickly to begin the permitting process with the aim of starting construction of the project in early 2024.”

Fusion Fuel Signs Terms of Acceptance with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa for €10 Million Component 14 Grant
February 16 2023
https://ir.fusion-fuel.eu/news-releases/news-release-details/fusion-fuel-signs-terms-acceptance-portuguese-prime-minister
Fusion Fuel (Nasdaq: HTOO) announced today that the company signed the terms of acceptance for a €10 million grant at a ceremony hosted by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa in Lisbon on February 15, 2023. This funding award had been approved through Component 14 (“C-14”) of Portugal´s Recovery and Resilience Plan. The company had previously disclosed the approval of the award for its HEVO-Industria project in August 2022, and with the formal signing of the terms of acceptance, the grant funding is now secured.
Pedro Caçorino Dias, Fusion Fuel’s Head of Portugal, who countersigned on behalf of the company, said, “The signing of the terms of acceptance alongside Prime Minister Costa is yet another milestone in the maturation of our Sines portfolio, which is the cornerstone of a near-term project development pipeline of over 225 MW of electrolysis capacity. With the C-14 grant in place, Fusion Fuel has now secured over €50 million in funding support from the Portuguese government, a remarkable achievement which promises to be a significant catalyst as we move closer to taking final investment decision on these projects.”
As the keynote speaker Prime Minister Costa reaffirmed his government’s commitment to green hydrogen as a strategic priority for Portugal and its decarbonization objectives. He was joined at the ceremony by Duarte Cordeiro, Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Climate Action.
Frederico Figueira de Chaves, Fusion Fuel’s Chief Financial Officer and Co-Head, added, “In many ways, HEVO-Industria is a prototypical project for Fusion Fuel, one which exemplifies the growing market for small-to-midscale projects, which require less capital investment, move quickly, and have a higher probability of reaching FID. In that environment, our ability to deploy decentralized, scale-agnostic green hydrogen production co-located with end-demand is a unique source of differentiation. On-site, integrated production addresses concerns around the availability of renewable energy and eliminates the cost and complexity of last-mile distribution of hydrogen. As we have said in the past, we are confident that our portfolio of these high value projects – focusing on industrial decarbonization, gas blending, and hydrogen mobility – will be a winning strategy for Fusion Fuel as the market develops.”
Fusion Fuel’s HEVO-Industria project consists of 300 HEVO-Solar units – equivalent to 6.6 MW of green hydrogen production – along with a co-located hydrogen refueling station and associated balance of plant to support local industry. The facility, which will be equipped with Fusion Fuel’s HEVO-Night solution to enable the continuous production of green hydrogen overnight or during periods of low solar irradiation, is expected to produce an estimated 764 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum. The company expects the project to serve local industrial customers in Sines, including hydrogen blending in the natural gas grid.

good t see them have a customer for this first (but very small) site.
The only downside of the HTOO solution is the area needed at the point of generation (other approaches using standalone electrolysers can be positioned anywhere on the supply route.
Hence I see either very large solar farms or the standalone off grid solutions like "remote" fuelling stations being their markets.
Fusion Fuel Signs Offtake Agreement with Portuguese Gas Utility Dourogás
January 30, 2023
https://ih.advfn.com/stock-market/NASDAQ/fusion-fuel-green-HTOO/stock-news/90084605/fusion-fuel-signs-offtake-agreement-with-portugues
Fusion Fuel (NASDAQ: HTOO) announced today that the company has signed an offtake agreement with Portuguese natural gas utility Dourogás for green hydrogen produced from Fusion Fuel’s projects in Portugal. This represents Fusion Fuel’s first offtake contract aimed at blending green hydrogen within the Portuguese natural gas grid, and a first-of-its-kind agreement to support the Portuguese government in meeting its decarbonization objectives. Portugal’s national hydrogen strategy, adopted in 2020, laid out high-impact targets including a 15% blend of hydrogen in its natural gas distribution network and 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030.
The first hydrogen to be blended will be produced at Fusion Fuel’s GreenGas project in Evora. The facility is expected to be commissioned in 2023 and would produce roughly 40 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum. Dourogás will be able to use this hydrogen in its domestic, industrial and mobility NGV segments, sectors where the Dourogás Group is the market leader. Portugal's largest gas distribution network, Galp Gás Natural Distribuição – recently renamed Floene – is expected to build the infrastructure to enable blending in the grid as part of its broader commitment to the energy transition.
On January 25, Fusion Fuel welcomed the senior executives of Dourogás and Floene to its Benavente electrolyzer factory to formally mark the execution of the agreement. Pedro Caçorino Dias, Fusion Fuel’s Head of Portugal, shared his thoughts on the accomplishment: “This is a critical milestone in the development of the green hydrogen economy in Portugal. Our agreement with Dourogás is the first large-scale green hydrogen offtake contract in Portugal to date, and a concrete commitment by players across the value chain to establish a liquid market for green hydrogen. Not only will this help us strengthen our footprint in the industrial decarbonization space, but it will also help lay the groundwork for Portugal achieve the aspirations it laid out over two years ago in its national hydrogen strategy. With its extensive service network and stated emphasis on sustainability and energy innovation, Dourogás is the ideal counterpart in this endeavour. We hope to continue to cultivate our partnership with Dourogás and explore further opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the area of hydrogen mobility.”
Nuno Moreira, CEO of Dourogás Group, affirmed, “This is an important agreement for the Dourogás Group since it represents a step forward in its mission to provide clean energy to and within Portugal. Dourogás has a public commitment to the decarbonization of the economy through the production and promotion of renewable gases, including biomethane and green hydrogen, and the Fusion Fuel project is innovative and develops with this same purpose. Dourogás is the leading gas company in the national NGV mobility sector and this project aligns with our commitment to contribute towards Portugal’s decarbonization goals. Our action and operations remain set to support the decarbonization agenda of the national gas sector and economy, aligned with national and European policies.”

About Dourogás
The Dourogás Group, which has its roots in the north of Portugal, more specifically in Vila Real, was born in 1994 by the will of a businessmen in conjunction with the municipalities that were excluded from the first Natural Gas national concession. Having in its genesis the construction of gas distribution networks, the Dourogás Group - which recently won the Green Energy Award of the Green Awards initiative of Visão magazine and Águas de Portugal Group - is investing heavily in research, development and production of renewable gases for the mobility sector, such as biomethane and green hydrogen, providing a cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy and helping the country to meet the goals set by the National Plan Energy and Climate 2021-2030 underway, and that will put Portugal on the path of the economy’s decarbonization.
No significant change in Fusion Fuel Institutional Ownership. https://fintel.io/so/us/htoo
it's a good goal to have. A large amount would be by HTOO and Acciona with PLUG !
The HTOO solution is so fast to deploy - the picture of their off grid site has just one BOP container I guess to compress and store the hydrogen. compare to PLUG or NEL or any other electrolyser supplier with all sorts of equipment surrounding the stacks.
These guys seem to understand how to influence governments and get things done- the Bakersfield project will start to raise eyebrows I am sure.
UK, I am very skeptical of that 20% of the world green hydrogen in Spain, mentioned in that article. and interpret it as likely just a gross exaggeration.

Visit follows approval of €36 million grant for Fusion Fuel’s Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance through Component 5 of Portugal’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan; included tour of PEM electrolyzer factory and ceremonial declaration of grant approval
SABUGO, Portugal, Jan. 11, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fusion Fuel (NASDAQ: HTOO) announced today that the company welcomed a delegation including Prime Minister António Costa, Mayor of Benavente, Carlos Coutinho, Secretary of State for the Economy, Pedro Cilínio, and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate, Ana Fontoura Gouveia, along with representatives from the Portuguese Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, I.P. (‘IAPMEI’) and the Municipality of Sines to its Benavente electrolyzer factory yesterday morning. The site visit was part of a country-wide tour of the fifty-one consortia that were approved for financing through Component 5 (“C-05”) of Portugal’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The company had previously announced that its consortium, the Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance, had been approved for €36 million in C-05 funding late last year. Several consortium members were also in attendance.
The visit began with a tour of the Benavente facility and HEVO micro-electrolyzer production lines led by members of Fusion Fuel’s executive team – Andre Antunes, Jaime Silva, and Frederico Figueira de Chaves. This was followed by an institutional event for the Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance, which featured speeches by Fusion Fuel’s Pedro Caçorino Dias, Portugal’s Secretary of State for the Economy, Pedro Cilínio, and Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa. The event concluded with a ceremony formally recognizing the approval of the Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance for C-05 funding.
Prime Minister António Costa speaks with reporters at Fusion Fuel's PEM electrolyzer factory in Benavente, Portugal
Pedro Caçorino Dias, Fusion Fuel’s Head of Portugal, who leads the consortium, commented on the visit: “It was a great honor to welcome the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet to our world-class electrolyzer factory in Benavente and introduce the groundbreaking work underway here. Our HEVO micro-electrolyzer technology lies at the heart of our differentiated offering, enabling us to build a market-leading position in Portugal. While we are moving quickly to establish a footprint in strategic markets worldwide, Portugal remains a core market and we remain committed to championing Portugal’s green hydrogen ambitions. Including the most recent C-05 award, Fusion Fuel has now secured over €55 million in grants from the Portuguese government across several funding programs, a powerful representation of Portugal’s commitment to establishing itself as a global leader in the new energy economy. We want to take this opportunity to recognize our partners in the consortium and everyone who contributed to this important milestone.”
Reflecting on the visit, Prime Minister António Costa spoke following the ceremony: “The national economy continues to develop with a bet on reindustrialization and this example, of Fusion Fuel, is an excellent example of reindustrialization of the country. We have here a facility that was closed ten years ago and that today is in activity; that once produced metallic structures for civil construction and now produces highly innovative technology for the production of green hydrogen. It will create new jobs and in itself produce a new value chain. Moreover, it also contributes to CO2 emission reductions.”
“The C-05 Agendas do not ‘only’ value the energy component, nor ‘only’ the environmental component. This is a true catalyst for the creation of qualified jobs and for a true reindustrialization of the country. All of the main components of this project are produced nationally: they are the result of national research, have national patents, and meet another fundamental objective, which is to promote our export capacity based on our major competitiveness advantage, which is our ability to innovate.”
“The most challenging program in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (‘RRP’) is the Mobilizing Agendas, which shows that it is possible to do more and better for the growth of our economy. The RRP funds are reaching companies and there are already 93,000 projects approved. Fusion Fuel, which I visited here today in Benavente, is one of the 93,000 approved projects. And this is an excellent example of the application of RRP funds aimed at capitalization and business innovation. This is how we realize the ambition of being a more developed, more prosperous, more fair country, capable of creating more and better jobs and capable of strengthening territorial cohesion.”

Investment Accelerates Industrial Decarbonization and Green Mobility Movement in Sines, Advances Commercial Green Hydrogen in Portugal
SABUGO, Portugal, Dec. 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fusion Fuel (NASDAQ: HTOO) announced today that the company has been approved for a total of €36 million in grant funding for its “Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance” through Component 5 (“C-05”) of Portugal´s Recovery and Resilience Plan. The component – Mobilizing Agendas for Business Innovation – is intended to align stakeholders from across the entire value chain to develop the domestic green hydrogen ecosystem. The company had previously disclosed that it had been selected for financing awards, subject to further negotiations with the Agenda Coordination Commission. These discussions have now been concluded and Fusion Fuel has submitted the respective award contract duly signed.
Of the €36 million awarded to the consortium, €22.5 million will be allocated to Fusion Fuel’s H2 HEVO-SINES project, a 3,000 HEVO-Solar facility – equivalent to 75 MW of electrolysis capacity – that will be developed, owned, and operated by the company. Fusion Fuel has already secured 121 hectares of land within the Sines area for the development of the project, which is expected to take FID and commence construction in 2024. The green hydrogen to be produced is expected to be used in decarbonizing local industry, mobility applications, and for blending into the natural gas grid. Another €3.5 million will be allocated to Fusion Fuel to fund research and development of its proprietary electrolysis technology. The balance of the funding will be allocated to other projects within Fusion Fuel’s consortium for which the company is a technology partner, including those sponsored by KEME Energy, Transition2Green, and HyLAB Collaborative Laboratory.
Fusion Fuel is also eligible for additional C-05 funding in its capacity as a consortium partner on two other projects that have already been selected by the Agenda Coordination Commission for financing awards. Those consortia expect to receive a funding decision over the coming weeks.
Pedro Caçorino Dias, Fusion Fuel’s Head of Commercial for Portugal who countersigned the terms of acceptance, commented on this achievement: “This is an important milestone, not only for Fusion Fuel, but for Portugal as well. It’s the largest funding allocation to date by the Portuguese government as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, a tangible expression of Portugal’s commitment to the energy transition effort and ambition to be at the forefront of the global green hydrogen economy. For Fusion Fuel, this decision will spur further progress on our flagship Sines project portfolio, which is the centerpiece of our European development pipeline. We expect to take FID on the first two phases of Sines, representing 12 MW, in 2023, with the 75 MW H2 HEVO-SINES project, the third phase of our Sines rollout, taking FID in 2024. With the land already secured we hope to mobilize quickly to begin the permitting process with the goal of commencing construction on H2 HEVO-SINES project in early 2024.”
Frederico Figueira de Chaves, Fusion Fuel’s Co-Head and Chief Financial Officer, added, “We have discussed at length our overarching commercial objective of finding a home for 100% of our production capacity beginning in 2023. The C-05 grants secured by the Sines Green Hydrogen Valley Alliance will give us a substantial head start and position us to deliver on that objective. The technology sales in our C-05 agenda account for 10-15% of our expected 2023 production, while H2 HEVO-SINES alone represents over 75% of our production capacity for 2024. We are thrilled to have received approval for this funding award, a decision that cements our position as a prominent player in the Sines green hydrogen ecosystem and further strengthens our market positioning as we begin to look at markets outside of Southern Europe.”

Solar-to-hydrogen project to be first stop on a California-to-Texas “hydrogen highway”
A 75 MW solar-to-hydrogen facility proposed for Bakersfield, California may mark the beginning of Fusion Fuel and Electus Energy’s green hydrogen vision for the United States.
By RYAN KENNEDY, NOVEMBER 28, 2022
https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2022/11/28/solar-to-hydrogen-project-to-be-first-stop-on-a-california-to-texas-hydrogen-highway/
The project would make use of both thermal energy and photovoltaic electricity.
Image: Fusion Fuel
Fusion Fuel, a modular solar-to-hydrogen facility provider based in Portugal, and Electus Energy, a hydrogen fleet-fueling and power infrastructure developer, announced the two have entered an exclusive joint venture agreement to construct a 75 MW green hydrogen facility in Bakersfield, California.
The proposed project is a solar-to-hydrogen site that would make use of Fusion Fuel’s proprietary hydrogen electrolyzer technology, called HEVO. The company said the facility, its first in the United States, would produce up to 9,300 tons of hydrogen fuel per year to fuel heavy-duty trucks.
Fusion Fuel’s HEVO technology is a miniaturized electrolyzer, affixed to the back of concentrated solar power (CSP) panel, which utilizes both photovoltaic-generated electricity and thermal energy. By using both heat and electricity, the electrolyzer’s efficiency is boosted considerably, thereby reducing the levelized cost of green hydrogen, said the company. The technology also uses dual-axis trackers to follow the sun throughout the day.
Fusion Fuel’s electrolyzers are miniaturized, modular, grid-independent, and affixed to the back of dual-axis concentrated photovoltaic arrays.

“By integrating the HEVO directly to the CPV module, not only are we able to utilize the electrical energy to power the electrochemical reaction without transport or conversion losses, but we can also recover that wasted thermal energy and use it to pre-heat the feed water, reducing the electrical load required to split water by roughly 10%,” said Fusion Fuel.
An investment of about $180 million is expected to be made to launch the 75 MW California project, with final investment decision to be made in early 2024 and project commissioning in early 2025.
“In just under two years as a public company, Fusion Fuel has established itself as a key player in the Iberian green hydrogen ecosystem. However, we knew that entering a new market, particularly one as large and complex as North America, would require a cornerstone project and a credible partner,” said Jason Baran, chief commercial officer at Fusion Fuel.
Once operational, the project will provide enough hydrogen fuel to support over 1,000 Class 8 trucks or buses per day. Class 8 is the largest category of trucking, with trucks weighing over 33,000 lbs.
Hydrogen is considered an effective use-case for technologies that need to readily dispatch high amounts of power, like in heavy-duty trucking or in industrial processes. However, the process of creating hydrogen fuel, electrolysis, requires large amounts of electricity. The marriage of solar and hydrogen electrolysis at one site helps trucking fleets achieve their emissions reduction requirements.

UK, I agree, this new $75 million deal alone, is bigger than its current market cap.
This is a. huge project for Fusion, 75MW of HEVO c30TPD production is impressive.
Glad to see them launching in the us with an impressive project and great location.
Only drawback is the timeline (FID 2024, commissioning in 2025)
hope to join the conference call there should be a lot more analysts than past calls given the news flow we have had this quarter

Bakersfield would be Fusion Fuel’s first project in United States, centerpiece of North American commercial strategy
SABUGO, Portugal, and LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fusion Fuel (Nasdaq: HTOO) and Electus Energy (‘Electus’) announced today that the two companies have entered into an exclusive joint venture agreement to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project in Bakersfield, California.
The proposed project is a roughly 75 MW solar-to-hydrogen facility using Fusion Fuel´s HEVO technology, capable of producing up to 9,300 tons of green hydrogen per annum including nighttime operation. The project would require an estimated €175 million (~$180 million) in capital investment, with a final investment decision expected in early 2024 and commissioning in the first half of 2025. Once operational, this project will provide enough hydrogen fuel to support over 1,000 Class 8 trucks or buses per day.
The companies have already entered into a land-lease agreement to secure 320 acres in Kern County, California for the project's development. Fusion Fuel has engaged Black & Veatch to perform a concept study and is also working with Cornerstone Engineering and Headwaters Solutions.
Jason Baran, Fusion Fuel’s Chief Commercial Officer, commented on the announcement, “This is a critical moment for Fusion Fuel and for our ambition to be a global leader in clean hydrogen solutions. In just under two years as a public company, Fusion Fuel has established itself as a key player in the Iberian green hydrogen ecosystem. However, we knew that entering a new market, particularly one as large and complex as North America, would require a cornerstone project and a credible partner. Due to the unique combination of solar irradiance, California tax incentives, and proximity to large-scale offtake, Bakersfield is the ideal project to anchor our North American strategy. We are extremely excited to be unveiling the Bakersfield project alongside our development partner, Electus Energy, which has been actively developing hydrogen mobility solutions in the Southwestern United States and has cultivated deep relationships with prospective offtakers in the logistics and distribution ecosystem.”
"We are excited about partnering with Fusion Fuel to implement their unique technology and expertise in one of our first large-scale green hydrogen production facilities in California,” said Andrew Greene, Electus Energy’s Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder. “The most critical part of implementing any successful hydrogen mobility program is the ability to source reliable, clean hydrogen fuel at an attractive price, and we believe our partnership with Fusion Fuel will help lower the cost of fuel for our customers and accelerate the adoption of zero-emission hydrogen vehicles for all automotive applications, including heavy trucking, public transportation and automobiles.”
Zachary Steele, Co-Head of Fusion Fuel, added, “North America has always been a focal point of Fusion Fuel’s growth strategy as we build on our successes in Iberia and begin to look beyond Southern Europe. However, the passage of the game changing Inflation Reduction Act earlier this year caused a dramatic acceleration of those plans. The production and investment tax credits promise to significantly improve the already attractive economics of our solar-to-hydrogen solution in many markets across the US.”
“Bakersfield will be the first anchor project of our US strategy, which is heavily focused on the hydrogen mobility and logistics opportunity and envisions a hydrogen highway from California to Texas. While our HEVO-Solar technology is best suited for markets with high solar irradiance, the expected introduction in 2024 of our newest product – HEVO-Chain – will make the entirety of North America part of our addressable market. In support of this strategy and to ensure we are positioned to move quickly to execute on Bakersfield and capitalize on the opportunity provided by the IRA, we will be ramping up our hiring efforts in the US as well as evaluating an investment in a domestic production facility to complement our new factory in Benavente, Portugal.”
