Streaming Media Is A Growing Profitable Internet Business Model, Reports The International Webcasting Association At NAB
LAS VEGAS, NV, Apr 25, 2001 (INTERNET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Streaming media is
evolving as one of the most effective business enterprises to emerge from the
Internet, the International Webcasting Association (IWA) announced today during
the annual National Association of Broadcasters convention.
The IWA, a worldwide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the art,
technology and commerce of webcasting, is composed of some of the Internet's
most prominent companies. The association's board of directors include, among
significant others, members from Microsoft, RealNetworks, Apple Computer, and
Morgan Stanley as well as webcasters, broadcasters, and educators from around
the world.
The IWA will present a panel today (4/25) at the NAB entitled, "Media on the Net
from Small Streams to a Sea of Revenue: from 2 to 6pm in Ballroom F of the
Venetian Hotel. Hosted by Peggy Miles, chairperson of the IWA, the keynote
speaker is Rich Lappenbusch of Microsoft. Panelists include Lorraine Barclay,
digital Spirit; Eric Scholl, Yahoo; Michael Turpin, Internet Wire; Richard
Wolpert, RealNetworks; Douglas Humphrey, Cidera; Mike Rockwel, Avid Technology;
Tom Rogers, PRIMEDIA; Graeme Weston, The Fantastic Corporation; David Woodrow,
Qwest Digital Media; Pierre Bouvard, The Arbitron Company; Jason Hollins, Edison
Research; and Larry Rosin, Edison Research.
Despite the current turbulence in the general technology community, the use of
streaming audio and video is one, if not the top requested technology being used
in conjunction with web pages. Streaming media on the Internet is one of the
web's most prominent benefits as it allows the display audio or video, live or
recorded along with text and datacasting information. It is being incorporated
into satellite, cable, digital TV and HDTV.
According to Peggy Miles, chairperson of the IWA, streaming media presents
profitable business models for both the business to business (B to B) and
business to consumer (B to C) communities. In additional support of this medium,
the NAB has announced a new show dedicated to streaming media, interactive radio
and TV called Xstream (September 6-8) in New Orleans, with the IWA as a
strategic partner.
The current difficulties in the radio internet broadcasting market, which have
seen major radio station groups withdrawing their Internet broadcasts due to a
dispute with AFTRA, is another temporary roadblock, said Miles. "Stations
understand their audience combines both over-the-air signal and Internet
listeners, so the current disputes will be of short duration until new contracts
are signed and new agreements reached.
"We predict resolution of these issues in the next six months. We believe that
both AFTRA and all Internet broadcasters want to work out this situation so both
parties profit equally by this new and exciting technology."
Another challenge for streaming media is to maintain clear and open
communications with the RIAA and other US and international organizations to
work together to make sure that the new laws for music on the Internet like the
DMCA evolve to benefit all. "It is important that everyone understand the
implications so that the recording industry, broadcasters and webcasters can
grow and profit fairly and share in the development of this industry," Miles
added.
Miles is president of Intervox Communications, a Washington DC digital
broadcasting, business development firm, and author of numerous books on digital
broadcasting and the future.
Despite market conditions and the resulting reduction of streaming media
companies, the news of some companies going out of business as well as stock
market fluctuations, and layoffs is expected, "Every great industry or
technological development comes to the market with a burst of euphoria, followed
by consolidation, and emerges as a far stronger, more powerful social force,"
said Miles. This is not news to anyone who has followed the broadcasting history
of radio, TV and cable. You will see Internet broadcasting following the same
steady growth path that we watched when we saw radio, TV and cable emerge in the
marketplace."
Other IWA board members' voices have been raised in strong support of the
continuing success of streaming media. "In the present market conditions, we are
challenged to analyze costs for the distribution of content to our clients" said
Roger Dean, Vice President of MultiMedia, Morgan Stanley, financial services,
"When I look at factors such as reuseabilty, flexibility, ease of production,
impact and global reach, nothing comes close to streaming media in terms of
cost-effectiveness."
William Mutual, chairman and founder of Popcast, Inc. which provides any
consumer with access to their personal videos on the Internet noted, "As the
market has driven out non-functioning business models, the streaming industry
has been particularly punished. The reality, however, is that streaming media
continues to accelerate exponentially in scalability and quality, with broadband
adoption increasing on track and the prerequisite automation technologies needed
for our industry now starting to enter service. For companies with proprietary
technology and strong innovation, the streaming media market remains brighter
than ever."
"Streaming Media is largely misunderstood and so it has been unfairly judged,"
said Tony Greenberg, CEO of RampRate, working with investments and business
growth. "For the past three years most of the hype (and disappointment) in
Streaming Media has centered around 'entertainment.'
Broadband is simply streaming media being sent faster on different wires or
fiber, Greenberg said. "Streaming Media is here to stay and every major
corporation will become a 'media', not 'entertainment' company producing
employee training modules to video conferencing, marketing communications and
more It is already happening in the financial sector.
"As companies begin to take advantage of cost- effective distribution networks,
they will realize the enormous cost-savings associated with various streaming
media applications (i.e., employee training / distance learning) and Streaming
Media will ride high again."
Noted Gavin Starks of Tornado Productions, London UK and Chairman of IWA Europe,
"The underlying commercial and consumer uptake of Webcasting continues to grow
in the Europe", comments Gavin Starks, founder and CEO of Tornado Productions.
"The fallout from the markets is that clear commercial models, products and
services have emerged as simple, sensible and sustainable businesses. We are
looking forward to continued expansion and innovation across an incredibly broad
range of sectors."
Former Chairman of the Massachusetts Broadcast Association and broadcast
management executive usan Pickering, is the Executive Director of the IWA. She

High-tech materials, re-engineered designs make up today's golf bags
April 20, 2001
By Ted Johnson
GolfWeb Columnist
If you want to win a bet with a Mr. Know-It-All golf fanatic, pose this question: Which industry has had the longest history and greatest impact on the equipment we use today?
The Hoofer2 is more than a bag. (Provided to SportsLine)
Most will answer "aerospace," since that's where materials like titanium were commonly used before they appeared in clubs. But a large argument can be made that no industry has had a greater impact on golf than backpacking.
High-tech materials and re-engineered designs aimed at providing comfort while we walk have been the forces behind a remarkable transformation that dates back at least 20 years.
No longer do people use those leather carry bags popular a generation ago. This is a high-tech, stand-bag era.
This bag is more than a bag. It's a small closet, refreshment stand and equipment store -- capable of standing on its own and weighing a fraction of what the leather trunks of days past did.
"The customer is looking for a bag that enhances the golf experience," said Jackie Perrin, the vice president of marketing at Belding Sports, makers of the innovative NXT Golf carry bag. "It has to be comfortable to carry while it lessens the burden to them.
"It has to be functional -- from how the clubs are arranged in the bag to how it balances on the back. Finally, a bag has to have features golfers want and can use, so overall it makes golf more enjoyable."
The latest generation of carry bags offers more than just less weight and increased durability. Today's top models have water bottle pockets, neoprene ball holders, webbed pockets for gloves, fur-lined pockets for valuables and sunglasses and, of course, room for clubs.
"And attitude," said Ogio spokesperson Kelly Mooney. "Lots of attitude."
Belding's NXT Gold Series uses "quad shock" bindings to hinge the double shoulder straps to the bag. These bindings absorb shock that comes when the bag rises and falls with the golfer's stride. Less bouncing means less strain on the shoulders.
"Gellycomb" inserts in the straps make them even more shock absorbent. Belding added "tri-glide" adjustments that rest on the straps near the golfer's chest. They allow for adjustments during walking and when the bag is ready to come off, they can be used to pop the straps loose. The bag comes off with a minimum of wiggle.
It comes with nine pockets, a bottom that serves as a "foot" to prevent slipping on uneven lies and legs that can be secured when the bag goes onto a cart or in a car trunk -- all in a package that weighs six pounds empty. It retails for $137.
Ogio, a company that made its name in luggage and backpacking gear, is credited with developing the "putter port." This is a slot designed to hold just a putter, thereby protecting it from banging against other clubs.
Ogio's Dolby bags weigh just 5.75 pounds each. They have self-healing zippers on the five pockets and a triple triangle, adjustable double strap for a personalized fit. The new three-point stand kicks out easily -- no fussing to make it stand securely.
The "Gator-Link" nylon resists tearing and, per Ogio's style, it has a luminescent quality -- the attitude Mooney was talking about. The Dolby retails for $175.
For all the attention that Ping gets for its fast-selling I3 irons and TiSI drivers, neither are industry leaders. But it does lead in stand bags.
"We do such a great job getting bags to kids," said Ping spokesman Pete Samuel. He estimated that out of the 282 players in last year's NCAA men's and women's Division I golf championships, 278 players used Ping bags.
Ping works its marketing magic to provide bags to colleges, true. "But other companies try as well," Samuel said. "And they all use our bag."
The Hoofer2 is the big brother of the original Hoofer, which debuted five years ago. One reason it may be popular among college and high school golfers is that two apparel pockets make it easy to pack anything from rainsuits to textbooks.
Rather than nylon, Ping uses polypropylene, which accounts for its durability and resistance to fading. No more tugging clubs out, no more jamming them back in -- the large hoof-shaped bottom is sloped for easy club removal. The dual straps are standard, but they can be adapted for single strap use.
"We've always designed our bags for the serious golfer," Samuel said. "And we seem to get them at an early age, and that makes keeping them a lot easier."

Hopefully things are shifting in our favour.
Good luck to all!
Lots of huge buys going down here papa, can't stay down much longer if these continue!

Morning Papa, the volume plays are interesting compare to the price. MM's, dilution, or just a crazy market, it is hard to figure out what is going on. The post on RB that referred to MM's shorting without stocks to short was interesting. The tuition I have invested in FBNI has been well worth the education.
Here's to great day! LOTS OF LUCK EVERYONE!!

WOW!! What a day. Afternoon everybody. Looks like alot of big interest movin in. Did a little research, FBNI is currently described as entertainment services. I could only find two other companies with comparable technology trading at $3.94 and $1.80. In the technology services group, I found very few with this technology. The big guy is Real Networks(RNWK) currently around $8.88 with a high FEB.2000 $90+. IBeam, who we recent became involved with, hit the market in May 2000 and went above $25 in june, they are currently around $0.88. In my opinion, we have a company that is gaining strength everyday, has a good technology with limited competition, a good advertising interest, and as of today expanded their target customers to include anything not just sports.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR FBNI?
Just some things to think about.
Big, big buys at the ask is always a very good sign. BTW, how's the bashers at RB taking the news...lol
b/r Arch
They're kicking them out pretty quick...the price should rise soon!
b/r Arch
There's that Form T trade again...ever figure out what that is...lol
b/r Arch
Arch-Afternoon Time and Sales / Wow... LOL...
Will be hard for the F2 Players to match the fast and furious action the stock saw today... Keep track now we we have Goydos, Gay, and Bates... We just need a Senior... How about Nicklaus... Think he has a sponsor already??? Smile.. Papa

F2 Broadcast Inc. Unveils 2001 Satellite Streaming Model
BOCA RATON, Fla., Apr 18, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- F2 Broadcast Inc.
(OTC Bulletin Board: FBNI), a fully reporting company, announces the creation of
a marketing package that enables entertainment promoters to affordably showcase
products, services, and entertainment events over the Internet via broadband
streaming technology. The company has totally streamlined its plans to focus on
this core competency which can create immediate revenue.
This new streamlined delivery platform is made possible by the technology
created through F2 Broadcast's strategic alliance with Mobile Satellite
Connection, a provider of satellite bandwidth.
The satellite streaming capabilities created by this alliance, coupled with F2
Broadcast's own media production technology, makes it possible for businesses of
all sizes to purchase affordable Internet video production services for live
streaming and on demand video utilizing traditional high speed access or
satellite.
F2 Broadcast has developed a pricing model for these services that includes
streaming, editing, encoding, and archiving video content for any type of
entertainment, sports, or corporate event. A complete pricing schedule can be
obtained directly from the company or by visiting www.f2sports.com. This service
is currently being provided to PGATOUR.com, and has been since October 2000.
F2 Broadcast Inc. showcased this broadcast technology when it streamed live from
the PGA TOUR's "Player's Championship" in March 2001. The "Inside the Pressroom"
feature was broadcast live from TPC Sawgrass, along with several other archived
features. While F2 Broadcast Inc. provides this service for PGATOUR.com they
also have done production work for Quokka.com/golf at last years President's Cup
and PGA.com at the 2000 PGA Championships.
"Not long ago, the term broadband included only ISDN, DSL and T1 lines," said
Howard Stern, President/CEO of F2 Broadcast. "Now, the technology created will
allow us to create video streaming production packages utilizing satellite
technology that even small companies can afford. The use of satellite provides
additional flexibility not available through hard lines. We at F2 Network are
proud and excited to continue to be on the leading edge of streaming video
technology."

iBEAM Smashes Network Record by Serving 1 Billion Audio and Video Streams
4/12/2001 7:01:00 AM
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Apr 12, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- iBEAM Broadcasting Corp. (IBEM) , the leading provider of streaming communications solutions, announced today that it smashed through an industry milestone and streamed its 1 billionth stream within the company's first 500 days of operation. Additionally, in March, iBEAM delivered some of the largest-known webcasts for popular events such as the NCAA Championships, the PGA Tour and the Academy Awards. Peak streaming bandwidth demand across the company's intelligent edge network has surpassed two gigabits per second (2 Gbps).
"iBEAM's delivery of 2 Gbps underscores the massive bandwidth required for large scale Internet streaming," said Christopher Baugh, principal analyst, Northern Sky Research. "Two Gbps peaks is a huge amount of data delivered. Given the attractiveness of applications such as Internet music and other streaming entertainment, it is reasonable to conclude that this traffic will continue its strong growth."
iBEAM's established dominance in the enterprise space of integrated business solutions, and in the streaming media markets of music, film, and sports, has helped iBEAM reach a monthly milestone as well. iBEAM has become the first known company in the history of streaming media to deliver more than 100 million streams of high fidelity audio and video per month for enterprise and entertainment clients worldwide.
The growth in streaming traffic correlates to increases of broadband connections at work, at home and in universities, as well as overseas demand for American content. Furthermore, there is a growing acceptance of enhanced content for major television events, which is being streamed over iBEAM's network. For example, "March Madness" has arguably become known as the biggest sports event on the Web, due primarily to people at work logging on to follow teams' results for their office pools, according to Keynote Systems (KEYN) , the Internet performance authority(TM). Additionally, the Academy Awards' Oscar site traffic was up 69 percent from last year with an average connect time of 39.3 minutes.
"To serve more than 100 million streams in March is a record for iBEAM, but to beat 1 billion streams in 500 days is a major industry accomplishment," said Peter Desnoes, iBEAM's chairman, president, and CEO. "Not only is iBEAM serving record quantities of video and audio streams across the Internet, we are blowing the Video Quality Indices off of the charts and into a whole new category of enhanced entertainment."
Keynote Systems also reported recently that iBEAM's high-fidelity video streams are best in the industry. According to Keynote, CBS SportsLine.com's high bandwidth 300K streams demonstrated very high quality, with an average 4.68 quality score, which exceeds the average for video streams on the Keynote Streaming 20 Index, which has averaged between 2.52 and 3.26 each week since January 14.
iBEAM serves more than 425 entertainment and enterprise customers. Aside from major entertainment events, iBEAM has recently signed several other agreements including the weekly show with PGATour.com airing on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. PST. iBEAM is further dominating the online music sector with long-term agreements with LAUNCH.com, MTVi and Rollingstone.com.
iBEAM's network utilizes satellite and fiber-optic technologies to deliver content to MaxCaster(TM) media serving systems located in access providers' networks closest to the end-user, on the edge of the Internet. This iBEAM approach allows streams to bypass Internet congestion, producing high fidelity audio and video for its customers and end-users.

Arch, Papa - Thanks for the perspective. They are out for the quick penny and they do feed on the nervous. Solid DD and current facts (not old issues) will make it for us.

BG-So You Have Noticed The Basher Pattern On RB...
They bash and buy away between PRs but get quiet just before the PRs to play the bounce... I'm concerned that the bashers always seem to know when the PRs are coming and not the Longs...
But like you say just wait for the quiet and get ready for the PR... Then directly back to the bash... F2 and all other OTCBBs will have to break free from the cycle by showing real revenues leading to profitablity... I like F2s chances in this area...
Bashers will return as soon as they sell for a .001 return on investment... Thats why I like my island of rationality in the storm here at IHUB... LOL...
You just gotta laught at these daytraders trying to make their Lexus payments... No offense to serious daytraders that don't try to manipulate the markets... IMHO... Papa...
Question everyone? It appears that the bashers have not made a significant post on RB since Thursday. Is this a sign?
Coceres wins sudden-death thriller
April 16, 2001

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Jose Coceres needed three additional holes and a little luck Monday to beat Billy Mayfair in a playoff at the WORLDCOM CLASSIC for his first PGA TOUR title.
Jose Coceres clinches his first PGA TOUR victory as Billy Mayfair looks on. (AP)
Coceres missed a short par putt for victory on the 18th hole, then saved par from a bunker on the 17th before a dramatic recovery from the marsh alongside the closing lighthouse hole.
Coceres and Mayfair played two playoff holes Sunday before darkness forced a postponement until Monday.
"It was quite an opportunity to finish it off," Coceres said through an interpreter. "I am very happy."
The Argentine earned $630,000 and a two-year TOUR exemption.
After Mayfair missed a 6-footer for par the second time the pair played No. 18, Coceres rolled in his 5-footer for par. He punched the air to the cheers of an unusually large crowd on a cool morning.
Coceres held up a hand-made sign to the stands that said, "For my family and my friends and for all the Argentineans, a million thanks."
Mayfair, who won the 1998 Nissan Open over Tiger Woods in a playoff, had his chances, too.
He put a 4-iron within about 15 feet on the par-3 17th, but missed the straight birdie putt. Coceres flubbed a chip from the bunker alongside the green to the fringe, then stuck the 12-footer to keep the playoff going one more hole.
Coceres hit a low liner that moved left the final time the two played the 18th, landing in a marshy hazard. But his chip was true, settling about 5 feet away. Mayfair was on the green in two about 25 feet away. He charged the putt, however, blowing it 6 feet past and missing the comebacker.
"The wind was keeping everything short so I guess I didn't want that to happen" on the putt, said Mayfair, who earned $378,000.
Coceres looked ready to win on the duo's first hole. But his putt of less than 3 feet for par did not go in. Mayfair made bogey after missing a 6-footer.
The 43-minute playoff capped a wild finish at Harbour Town Golf Links, where both Coceres and Mayfair had chances to win Sunday.
Mayfair had birdies on the fifth, sixth and eighth holes and was at 13 under, two shots ahead of a faltering Coceres. Then Mayfair drove out of bounds on the par-4 11th, leading to a double bogey.
Both players, though, made the critical shots down the stretch. Mayfair was the first to 11 under when he rolled in a 30-footer for birdie on No. 16. Then he saved par from a back bunker with a 15-foot putt on the 18th to stay there.
Coceres hit a wedge to 2 feet on the 16th hole for a birdie to catch Mayfair.
The two agreed not to move to the third playoff hole, the 18th, even though about 15 minutes of light remained.
"When you can't see, you can't see," Mayfair said.
The playoff was stopped Sunday evening after two holes, where the two matched pars.
It was the first Monday finish at Harbour Town since Doug Tewell beat Jerry Pate in a playoff in 1980.
